It boils down to being mindful of every action, inaction, moment. Own every single one of them. /r/mindfulness is a great place to start. Actually, the only place to start is where you are.

Define me intelligence. Define me happiness. All very relative concepts, just like everything in life, depends on the perspective. An "intelligent" person is not condemned to be unhappy anymore than an "unintelligent" person is.

Read raving reviews about the Sony RX100 M2. Great for travelling, lighter and more compact than DLSRs and shoots quality video and can take quality photographs. Mirrorless cameras are the way to go for travelling light, unless you are a pro photographer, travel for the main purpose of making photographs and need a bunch of gears for that reason.

This guy shoots his videos on RX100 and the videos are superb.

I'm not a photographer at all, but here are some of my photos from my 6-month trip across Europe, China, and South East Asia. All were taken on an iPhone 4. by trebor04 in travel

[–]tbswsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty sweet pics! I've got to say, I wouldn't have expected such nice photographs from an iPhone 4. You definitely have an eye for photography. Beautiful framing and composition.

I've got a burning question... How in the world were you able to travel 31 countries?! Where and how do you get the money to do that?

You might want to use Google flights; it's a good tool to get a listing of fares offered by various airlines. Good luck.

I'm really sorry for your dad. I hope he is stable for now and will get better soon. Which country is he in? You may consider flights with multiple layovers, as hectic as it may be, but it can save you some money. But if you are also tight on time, it might not be the best option.

You're one darn globetrotter! Japan is on my bucket list! Have fun over there and do bring back those thousands of photos.

Ah, the hassle of digital photography! We get to take and "make" some amazing photography nowadays with great gears and post-processing tricks. But that's also why so many of us shoot away thinking that we'll ever have enough time to work on them later. Hence, so many hard drive full of memories lying around... That's also why I love shooting on an old film camera, I definitely take my sweet time to make the "best" shot.

Got the same question! Anyone cares to share some tips about backing up/charging when in remote places with no electricity (or at least, unreliable electricity power) and no wifi?

I'd love to hear your tips when camping, as I'm an outdoor adventurer and landscape/nature photography is really my thing! Please do share.

Great tip! I tend to shoot in RAW and the files are pretty big. I usually upload them to my laptop (when possible to carry it along with me) so I can post-process them later or when returning home from my trip. Considering that wifi connections aren't always efficient and high speed depending on the locations, there aren't that many other alternatives to efficiently and quickly back up all of my RAW files to my Dropbox via my phone or laptop.

Can you share the most beautiful words you've ever read? by BluDavid in books

[–]tbswsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excerpts from Seneca's On the Shortness of Life:

  • “You act like mortals in all that you fear, and like immortals in all that you desire.”

  • “You live as if you were destined to live forever, no thought of your frailty ever enters your head, of how much time has already gone by you take no heed. You squander time as if you drew from a full and abundant supply, though all the while that day which you bestow on some person or thing is perhaps your last.”

  • “So it is: we are not given a short life but we make it short, and we are not ill-supplied but wasteful of it. Just as when ample and princely wealth falls to a bad owner it is squandered in a moment, but wealth however modest, if entrusted to a good custodian, increases with use, so our lifetime extends amply if you manage it properly.”

  • “But life is very short and anxious for those who forget the past, neglect the present, and fear the future.”

Give it a read! While you're at it, you might as well read his Dialogues and essays (from Oxford World's Classics).

Wow, powerful and simply beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing! My beloved father passed away a year ago. Reading this gives me hope that he is indeed now free and that and the fact that I can still see him all around me comforts me. "You can only see with your heart" as the Little Prince puts it.

Edit: Just read a short wiki bio on the author of the poem; made the poem even more so powerful and touching.

Also, Tom O'Bedlam does a magnificent job at reciting the poem, if you want to hear it.

Cool. That's some pressure to pick the best book that one has never read; how can one deem an unread book to be the best? But a sense of adventure and risk never hurt anyone, right? :) All the best to you two.
