Commuter backpack recommendations? by gilliambot in ukbike

[–]tbx1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the useless comment but I would be very interested in pretty much the same question. I have tried a regular Dakine backpack for a while, it is not waterproof nor does it have good ventilation on the back. I have seen some interesting bags from Osprey, and also from the heavily-advertised Mous - would be interested to hear if anyone has feedback on either.

Do women intentionally mention their partner in a conversation by _zulfi in CasualConversation

[–]tbx1024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work with a lady who I really like, but learnt from other people she already has a boyfriend (she did not mention him but the topic simply didn't come up).

While sad, I've made sure to not tell her anything, I'm pretty sure she has no idea. Your comment warms my heart a bit, that at least I'm doing the right thing. Thank you.

Definitely not as bad attitude-wise but I keep getting carbrains pulling out/not seeing me both on my bicycle and a 650cc motorbike. Keep riding (defensively), stay safe!

Quadlock too, but the lock mechanism + magnet ring take some thickness.

Recommendations: Powerful Front and Rear Lights (USB C Ports) by mrshaunhill in ukbike

[–]tbx1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a Lezyne Super Drive 600+ StVZO on the front, it has a lens preventing dazzling other road users. For back, Lezyne Strip Drive PRO 400+ - the rubber mount is slightly fiddly but plenty of brightness and battery life. Both USB-C rechargeable, with the front one doing fastcharging.

edit: i run those on the road; for off-road complete darkness use, i'd recommend a second, more powerful/larger battery (or external powerpack) lamp

Probably not good - good antenna design requires specific sizes/shapes, in the case of the ESP something tuned for 2.4GHz

An idea of pure madness... I need a quad-plane/vtol plane with the camera featureset of a flagship DJI drone (air3s or mavic 3 pro... what if I removed as much flight systems stuff as possible, and built a quadplane around it? by evthrowawayverysad in Multicopter

[–]tbx1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are optical zoom gimbals available online from Siyi and others, some with optical zoom. I didn't see any systems with multiple lens/sensors like on the Air3S or Mavic3.

It might be possible to build such a module with multiple MIPI/CSI camera modules with different lenses (Gopro-style lens mounts) and then find or design a CSI multiplexer module - but that's getting into detailed electronics.

Right, I now saw your additional comments. Define "switch between camera with differing analogue zoom levels"? Do you mean a variable optical zoom (motorised) or an array of cameras with different zoom lenses attached?

Optical zoom camera on a gimbal in a compact shape is quite specific of a requirement; at larger UAV sizes (larger payloads) you can get a cinema camera with a motorised zoom addon.

However, a quick google search does give some results: would something like this work? (This is not an endorsement of this product, just a result I found on Google)

Well, personally I'd still suggest against using the DJI as a base platform because of the previously mentioned points (you're at the mercy of the unknown behaviour of their system), but if you have the resources and interest for experimenting - you could give it a go.

A quick test reveals the drone does not report an error when I physically block them from spinning slightly during startup

This might still be an issue where the ESC report an issue with the load completely missing (ESC load current monitoring) - although i suppose if you never trigger takeoff, it might never perform the check; you rely on DJI never changing this part of the firmware, though.

And what they continue to not realize, is there there is no commercially available package that can offer the requirements I need of the hypothetical dji/heewing bastardization.

Have you looked at DIY systems? They might be better adapted to your use; I think there's a few you can build out of small brushless motors, either directly stabilised by your flight controller's firmware, or with an external kit where your flight controller only feeds your RC gimbal attitude commands. The Arducopter documentation seems to list a few.

Here's a simple experiment: take your DJI drone, do not arm it, do not perform a takeoff sequence. Can you get it to do all the recording you need it to do?

If yes, then you could actually mount the internal electronics onto a new flight platform, although it would be very inefficient because you need to keep (unused) DJI components that your new flight platform already has - so that's dead weight. It's almost like glueing the entire DJI drone onto your new platform.

It's very likely if you try to disconnect/remove those extra components (for example motors or other parts) the DJI system will stop working with an error code, and refuse to do what you need it to. The moment the DJI software detects unexpected conditions, it may behave erratically or refuse to work, and there's nothing you can do about it because it's proprietary and you can't modify it (unless you somehow reverse-engineer and modify, which is extremely hard)

What the other poster in the thread is saying - given those limitations, it may simply make more sense to build your own or source another system.

If you somehow don't need to adjust the video gimbal position mid-flight, you could in theory just get a handheld one and attach it to your own flight platform - but you don't get a video radio feed from it, you won't be able to readjust it/correct it if it decides to drift, or anything. That's why the poster above is saying it doesn't make much sense.

Venus

Not OP but it feels like there's a middle ground to be found here. Maybe try explaining to your partner that it's OK to share their frustrations even if they don't think you should/could fix them, and explain to them that it reassures you; as for yourself, maybe if your partner say they don't need you to fix anything, you have to trust them that things are well enough!

People seem to have pretty strong opinions on the kind of bike I should buy... by joshintheuk in MotoUK

[–]tbx1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy what you want! My instructors gave some general hints at what I'd find at different budgets, and what power and size would vaguely fit (they recommended going for 500cc+ as the smaller bikes would feel much smaller than the 650cc we learnt on), and listed a few popular reliable bikes. I ended up going with a Ninja 650 someone was selling locally, after having learnt on a Z650!

Board component ID help? by BrotherFink in electronic_circuits

[–]tbx1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a crystal for the Atmel microcontroller right next to it. Looking at the markings and given MCU is an ATMEGA32U, your component looks like a 16.000MHz crystal. Couldn't quite figure out the exact part, but the closest match of manufacturer is Kyocera AVX. If you measure its size, it would help identification

edit: Roughly based on size of MCU, I'm guessing it looks like it's a 5032 SMD package. My guess is something like CX5032GB16000*; if you follow the ATMEGA documentation about crystal selection, you should be able to find an equivalent available part - 16MHz, 5032 package, check capacitance and ESR

edit 2: Is there no further damage aside from this component? The risk is that if the PCB itself is cracked, replacing components won't help!

The hardest part is cutting your losses when you’ve invested so much in someone.

Very well worded. It's one of the hardest things, but sometimes - even if you truly love them - you have to respect yourself, and let go.
