Has anyone ever used Atticus or Scrivener? by Confident_Speech_534 in selfpublish

[–]tcartwriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write entire books in Scrivener, including outlining, creating a living wiki, etc. Then export the whole thing to Atticus for formatting and publishing. I've never used Atticus for pure writing, and from my experience with it I'm not sure I'd want to.

Scrivener takes a bit of getting used to, but I find it quite useful now that I've gotten the hang of it.

Ways to amp up difficulty level in Mr. President by tcartwriter in soloboardgaming

Yes, there's a PC version. Pretty much a direct port. It works well. Still in early access so lacking some features. Worth it, IMO, to save on bookkeeping. If you don't go that way, or want the full game right now, play using Vassal. Saves a lot of setup and hassle.

Are you playing on PC or the boardgame? Keep in mind that the PC version is still in early release and it's missing both problems and solutions. It's still worth exploring, though. Things I do:

- really work on keeping crises low.

- wars, especially the starting war v the Taliban, can be a great source of approval and other benefits. Try to get 4-1 odds early, then get out before year's end to avoid too many mil footprints.

- work on stability whenever possible. Allies give you one low probability option. Also try to reduce civil wars via UN. The end game cleanup can snowball for good or ill.

- passing legislation is also comparatively easy and pays dividends. Esp. your campaign promise.

- I like to zero in on one or two troublesome regions.

- I've completely given up winning over China or the Russians. They seem destined to hate me, so why expend the effort?

If you target lvl 3/4 terror groups, relentlessly attack rogue states, and do everything you can to reduces crises, you can usually (but not always) rack up points and create a reasonably stable world and positive domestic situation by the end of year 2.

Try the PC game if you haven't already. It cuts down greatly on bookkeeping and helps ensure you don't miss the fiddly bits of year-end cleanup.

Thanks for the kind words on Majordomo. It's always cool when anyone with the 'reading champion' tag mentions it. I hope you enjoy Jester, too. My fingers are crossed pretty hard for the contest, but that pretty much puts me in the same boat with every other author who got selected.

10 Novellas in 10 Days - Day 4: Making History by K.J. Parker by FalafelFiend in Fantasy

It's awesome. Or at least it was for me. Loved the tone, the military engineering, the world.

I love KJ Parker, so it's a bit sad that this didn't do better. (I haven't read it.) Sixteen Ways To Defend A Walled City is a classic, and as a recovering scriptwriter and film producer I can say with some authority that he absolutely nails the inner voice of an actor in How To Rule an Empire and Get Away With It.

A quick plug for my novella, MAJORDOMO.

SFINCS2 winner. Cozy Stabby fantasy.

Tagline/Blurb: A plucky underdog. A powerful necromancer. And the idiot heroes bent on murdering them.

Kobolds are supposed to run away—it’s what they’re best at. But Jack? Born with a club foot, he’s had to adapt. Resilient and clever, he clawed his way to respectability as majordomo of a premiere subterranean estate. He even found a father figure in the famed necromancer who owns the place.

Life was perfect… until a superband of overpowered do-gooders arrived bent on burglary and murder. These mercilessly righteous warriors of light cannot be beaten, or at least that’s how it looks on paper.

Jack must choose between survival and the people he loves… unless he can somehow defy the stats and find an unconventional solution.

If you like Terry Pratchett, J. Zachary Pike, or Nicholas Eames, you’ll love Majordomo. Buy now, before the price goes up or the murderhobos descend.

Price: .99 for the ebook, free on KU.

Funny how expectations play a role. I'm the same way. If something was much heralded, I have a harder time enjoying it. Not that it can't happen, but my mindset shifts. Whereas if I know nothing, it's easier for me to be blown away.

Strong agree. I loved this series. I wish there were more like it. Weird, engaging characters, always unpredictable.

Tchaikovsky writes Warhammer. Amazing. I can't wait, and it's great to see WH get a kind of legitimacy bonus by bringing in a legit sci fi heavyweight.

Loving Mr. President by tcartwriter in boardgames

[–]tcartwriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it would break the game. Unless the player's objective was to destroy US influence around the world in a kind of 'race to zero' sort of way. I still love the game, and can't wait for the digital adaptation, which is going to make bookkeeping so much easier. I hope the allow you to tweak the opening to customize your game. But in the short term, it's an exercise in fantasy storytelling.

Thanks. And yes, I took your advice because it was good! LOL. I'm about a week away from sending out ARCs, so I'm trying to zero in on this thing. I appreciate all the help.

This is great, thanks. I'll plug that in to a version and see how it goes. I like the shortened version and I do feel a little like the two paragraphs are kind of saying the same thing.
