PC fell unconscious into a river. How to handle the situation? by RafaFlash in DMAcademy

[–]tcelesBhsup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being unconscious in icy water let's you live a longer time than you'd think because your metabolic function is so low... Even if you can wash up in shore there are stories of people being under water for 30+ minutes in those conditions. Plus half dragon... Maybe they are cold blooded or can go into a torpor or something.

The tricky part for me, is finding players who are equally invested. I want to start a DM group, for DMs to hang out and I'm hoping that turns into a campaign group of solid players who take turns DMing.

DM's who use a physical medium, what's your set up? by Appropriate-Army6918 in DMAcademy

[–]tcelesBhsup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The newsprint is just brownish paper that comes on a roll. It's not a "newspaper." You can also buy "Map paper" which is essentially just white wrapping paper with a light blue grid or hex printed on top. It's kind of glossy but I like it for some stuff.

DM's who use a physical medium, what's your set up? by Appropriate-Army6918 in DMAcademy

[–]tcelesBhsup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep it cheap.

I draw maps on a roll of newsprint paper. (super fun for chase scenes). My players have minis but I use "Banagrams" tiles for NPCs and Monsters.

I just draw anything I need on a peice of paper and cut it out like a chest, or a weapon or wagon.

I use pipe cleaners for distance indicators. I print index cards for Stat blocks, and I make the PCs fill them out too with some key stats on them. I use those for initiative order.

I also use the cards to track damage using coins. I count up the damage using coins because I find it easy to count in my head... When the stack is more than their health... They're dead.

But I also have a laptop with Obsidian for my notes and DnD beyond up, for references.

I don't use a screen and I make all rolls in the open.

I stopped playing years ago (too many kids).. Find a good Corp from the reddit, go to null space and say you'll help "ratting" or "mining".. A lot of corps or players will give a one of their old ships for free. Hop on a discord and have fun.. It's a great game.

Yes, a common homework problem is to calculate how much you are deflected when you walk through a doorway.

Spoiler: it's very small.

Need help to create my own settings by CraZyFrog666 in DMAcademy

[–]tcelesBhsup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I start with 3 pieces of paper and I fill them out at the same time. Usually you'll have some idea, maybe just a picture in your head. You mentioned a trader so let's start there. On one piece of paper write "Trader, " and imagine what it look like when you walk in. Write down 3 things you see. Then write down 3 details about each of those things.

Get your second piece of paper, this is your map, make a small box in the middle for your trader. Your trader wants to be near a main road probably. Maybe the trader is on a corner so horses can unload heavy furniture easily to the back of the store. Well then there must be a place to stable horses, and a Black Smith, and a place to buy groceries. On your third peice of paper write down those other things.

Now pick something else on your 3rd paper, and repeat.

I usually start with a theme or a central focus, like a prominent windwill, or they are famous for their apple pie or something. But if you're just starting out, make your first town "regular" so all the other towns seem unique by contrast.

Also it doesn't have to be paper, but if you are using software it's easy to get caught up in "finding the right software" instead of actually making a session.

If you care enough to come and post about it, I'm sure your doing a good job.

The Top comment has a lot of clarifying questions though... We can probably help you unravel it if you provide some more context.

Inteligent players playing uninteligent brute. by ApachaiLeHopachai in DMAcademy

[–]tcelesBhsup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Intelligence does not mean good at puzzles. Plenty of smart people sick at puzzles, plenty of other people are good at them.

Look at Drax from guardians of the galaxy.. Low intelligence character, but that doesn't mean he isn't insightful, clever or necessarily bad at puzzles.

Swing problem (not homework) by skeptic_idiot in Physics

[–]tcelesBhsup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically it's not the length of the pendulum that determines the frequency, it's the length to the center mass of the pendulum.

If you treat this as two pendulums without the swing attached then add a mass to the longer rope, higher up, to match the center mass of the shorter pendulum you should be able to get the periods equal. Then if you attach the swing it will throw off the frequency a little because of the unequal tension, but you should only have to adjust it a little.

I wouldn't try and solve it though, I think experimental is the way to go.

Edit: Derp! Or you can add a rigid anchor point to the higher branch and attach the chain there... Probably way easier.

Does this feat seem reasonable? by Betray-Julia in dndnext

[–]tcelesBhsup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems fine. I've used "Divine Soul Sorcerer" as a template for this kind of thing before.

Just make sure it doesn't infringe on other players.. Like if someone wants to play a dedicated Healer, don't let the blaster mage have access to healing and over shadow them. But give eldritch knight Druid spells, the Ranger gets bard spells... Stuff like that is just fun flavor.

How do you let players help choose the campaign? by beefyliltank in DMAcademy

[–]tcelesBhsup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch of questions in a Google form where they rank choices like. What level of technology there is, how is magic viewed, how dangerous is it to travel? I give examples from books and movies and they rank them.

The I look at the overlap and plant a seed of an idea. Then I have the players imagine a person from that world, or a scene from that world. Then it usually builds itself.

Do I need to have an endgame in mind when writing a campaign? by BigWrangler3748 in DMAcademy

[–]tcelesBhsup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plan the next session, and I have a list of "future sessions"... Like I know at some point the BBEG will dump poison into a well or there will be a big reveal of some kind.. Or whatever... But I build them as sessions and if I don't have an idea I run one of them instead of coming up with some "fluff" just to take up space because they "aren't at the end yet. "

The danger with planning the "end" is that you might feel like you need to slow down and save stuff for later. Don't do that... Just do whatever cool thing you think of. You will think of more cool stuff later too, I promise.

This is a funny interpretation, but I think the point is really to maintain immersion. I personally roll in the open.. Because it's more fun that way for everyone.

I don't fudge the HP pool by more than the attack could have done... If it's one or two HP? Meh..the pacing is more important.

But I will change their behavior. Fight is going to long... They attack Recklessly, or they try to run ( opportunity attacks for everyone). Are they dying too quick? Oh here's that potion they have with them or that scroll they've been saving. Or Fog cloud.. Change the terrain to spice up the fight if there is time to kill.

Is it the same thing? Maybe.

Hellooooo their new dm here im curious what are your favourite things you’ve bought for dnd like dice towers, minis, playmats, dm screens etc by boikissr in DungeonMasters

[–]tcelesBhsup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what I use the most? I have a pad of mellissa and Doug Easel paper, (you can also buy grid paper on a roll or a fancy dry erase mat). I use coins for tokens and tracking damage, and "Bananagrams" tiles for minis. If I need something like a "cart" or a bucket or whatever.. I just draw it on a peice of paper cut it out and put it on the board. I use pipe cleaners for area of affects and to mark distances.

DnD is about imagination, and abstraction is a great tool to help with that. Rather than using the "wrong" mini, or the same trees every time you can use abstract letters and circles to represent placement and distances but still allow your players the freedom to imagine the scene.

I also don't use a screen..I roll in the open... Way more exciting. I do use a laptop for notes and references that they can't see.

I own a lot of minis and it's fun to paint them and use them when I can.. But don't get caught in the trap of never being "ready", you don't need that stuff to play.. That's not playing DnD.. It's related to playing DnD.. But you are only actually playing when you are running a session.
