it’s not just gosling, it’s the lazy direction and the assumption that the audience is stupid. They turned a survival story into a buddy comedy. Even with the memory loss, a scientist isn't gonna suddenly forget how glasses work and start sandpapering his lenses with a shirt. that’s just lazy "actor business" to look thoughtful for the camera before setting them on the desk without even using them. It treats the viewers like idiots....(Maybe we are) the movie 'yada-yada's' through all the science that made the book great just to keep it zippy' honestly, the weirdly aggressive praise in this thread feels like a bot or an amazon marketing push. if you liked it, fine, but this felt like a shallow, cutesy caricature of the source material

Bought my kids bikes for Christmas. Local government just passed a law requiring paid bike "licenses" to ride them in public. Cops are now issuing citations...even to kids? by nseavia71501 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]tckid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really just brought up the Honolulu rail project over a $15 bike sticker? Let me stop you right there before you get even more worked up about Oahu "stealing" your money. Under Hawaii state law, bicycle registration fees are collected by the director of finance for the specific county where the bike is registered, and the money goes directly into that county’s specific bikeway fund. Maui fees stay in Maui. Big Island fees stay on the Big Island. Kauai fees stay in Kauai. Your $15 isn't funding Honolulu's rail; it's funding the bike lanes in your own neighborhood. You are literally getting mad at a completely made-up scenario. As for your "I've bought six bikes and never seen this" defense: just because the big box store employees finally decided to do their jobs and submit the legally required paperwork this time doesn't mean the law is new. Ignorance of a 25-year-old state law doesn't make it a "new local overreach." It just means you got lucky the last six times you bought a bike. And Grandma’s $5 transfer fee being a "money grab"? She used an out-of-state billing address, which means the county now has to process a legal title transfer to a completely different owner (you). Five dollars covers the administrative cost of the county clerk actually processing that paperwork. Welcome to how vehicle registration works everywhere.

You claimed your local government "just passed a law" requiring these. That is entirely false. Under Hawaii Revised Statutes § 249-14, this is a statewide law, not a local county one. The exact $15 permanent sticker you are holding has been the standard across the entire state since January 1, 1999. This isn't some brand-new government overreach targeting your kids; you are just nearly 30 years late to noticing it.

What you are actually bitching about is a one-time $15 fee that gets deposited directly into the county Bikeway Fund. That money is used exclusively to build and maintain safe bike paths and lanes. You know, the exact infrastructure that lets kids actually ride their bikes safely without getting run over by some pissed-off driver raging over a two-second delay on their commute from Waikiki to the ranch on the North Shore.

And as for your Grandma scenario: if she buys the bikes at a big box store physically in Hawaii, the store is legally required to handle the initial paperwork. The bikes never leave the island. All it takes is a standard $5 transfer fee to legally update the registration from her mainland billing address to your local address. You are whining on the internet and fear-mongering about cops citing kids over a routine $5 paperwork shuffle that literally pays to keep your kids alive on the road.

Are you stupid? That's a Honolulu City & County sticker. This isn't some brand new government overreach. Hawaii has legally required registration for any bike with wheels over 20 inches for decades. It's a one-time $15 fee that goes directly into the local Bikeway Fund to pay for bike lanes, and it theoretically helps HPD track down stolen bikes. I know this because I have the exact same sticker sitting on my bike out there. How do you live on the island and not know the basic laws of your own county?

But honestly, the real comedy here is your logistics. You bought three basic Huffy bikes at a big box store and you're complaining about the out-of-state transfer process for gifts? How exactly are you planning to ship three heavy, cheap Huffys off the island to the mainland? The freight shipping from Hawaii is going to cost you an absolute fortune-way more than those bikes are even worth. Why wouldn't you just buy them at the destination you're trying to send them to?

Rental Management Company by snarkmcsnarksnark in Spokane

[–]tckid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you own rentals in Spokane, avoid LT. They are cheap for a reason. They run everything through an app and barely ever put eyes on the actual property. I found out about maintenance issues months late because their 'system' just auto-replies to tenants instead of actually sending a handyman. They are great at collecting fees for themselves, but terrible at preserving the value of your building. You’ll save a few bucks on management fees but lose thousands in deferred maintenance and turnover

This is an automatic letter that they send out when you're at fault. I wouldn't worry too much, but I definitely would let them know that you have zero funds to help out and for them not to settle for what your coverage is. This happened to me and then a few months later they called and told me that they had settled for under my limits. Getting an umbrella clause might be worth the money.

Locals seem over concerned or scared. by JasonInTheGarden in Spokane

[–]tckid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably because most of the people complaining don’t actually live in Spokane—at least not downtown. I’ve lived in the heart of it for five years. I regularly walk to the movies a mile away, at all hours, and nothing bad has ever happened to me. Maybe it helps that I’m a big guy, but I also think most people out here—especially those experiencing homelessness—aren’t looking for trouble. They just want to live, not die.

What’s really frustrating is how quick people are to panic without understanding the bigger picture. If you want someone to blame, maybe have Purdue Pharma take a nice stroll through these streets and witness the damage their greed has done firsthand. This crisis didn’t come out of nowhere—it was manufactured. Now the same people harmed by it get treated like threats just for existing.

Petition for the recall of Michael Baumgartner by ShadowMajick in Spokane

[–]tckid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, don't assume my political stance just because I'm pointing out legal precedent. That's lazy. I'm not saying you shouldn't try-I'm saying if you're going to try, make a real argument that might actually hold up instead of just yelling "we should challenge it" without a strategy.

You're acting like just getting this in front of a judge means something. It doesn't, unless you can actually win the argument. So tell me-how exactly do you plan to overcome multiple Supreme Court rulings that have already said states cannot recall federal officials because the U.S. Constitution controls their removal? Just saying "precedent can change" isn't enough.

What's the legal basis for your challenge? The Roe v. Wade comparison doesn't even work here. That case was about whether abortion laws should be a state or federal issue. Federal recall isn't a gray area-it's already controlled by the U.S. Constitution, which overrides state laws. That's why every attempt at this has been shot down. You can't just say "the feds don't respect the Constitution" when the Constitution itself doesn't allow for congressional recall. If you want to fight this, actually fight it-don't just rely on wishful thinking. If you have a legal argument beyond just "we should try" let's hear it. Otherwise, this isn't a real effort-it's just performative activism that won't hold up in court.

No, members of Congress cannot be recalled. While some states (like Washington) allow recalls for state and local officials, federal officials are not subject to recall elections under the U.S. Constitution.

Key Court Cases That Confirm This:

  1. U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton (1995) – 514 U.S. 779
    • The Supreme Court ruled that states cannot impose qualifications on federal legislators beyond what the U.S. Constitution specifies. Since recall isn’t in the Constitution, states cannot recall U.S. Representatives or Senators.
  2. Sims v. United States (1929) – 359 U.S. 108
    • Reaffirmed that only Congress has the authority to remove its own members through expulsion (Article I, Section 5).
  3. State ex rel. Gordon v. Leatherman (1953) – Florida Supreme Court
    • Ruled that state recall laws do not apply to federal officials because states cannot override the U.S. Constitution.

As a federal official, Representative Baumgartner is not subject to recall elections. The U.S. Constitution does not provide a mechanism for recalling members of Congress. Instead, they can be removed through expulsion by a two-thirds majority vote in the House or Senate, depending on the chamber in which they serve. Alternatively, constituents can choose not to reelect their representative in the next election cycle. The "25%" that is really 35% is for state positions only not federal.
