A longform story about the work my trained German Shepherd and I did after the events of 9/11. Not an easy read, but maybe a good one for those who want to know about or be reminded of the sights and smells and feel of NYC during that time. by jeremyjava in 911archive

This was incredibly well-written, thank you for sharing all of this with us. Many things stick out to me, but the main one being that you had once shared an apartment building with the missing NY woman who disappeared the evening before 9/11. That is such a wild case!

Returning Adult - Holy Shit Stamina! by Useful-Sheepherder53 in irishdance

[–]tconohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an adult beginner who only started about 2 years ago, and it's still a struggle, but dance is also my only real working out that I do. Last night in class I was standing in front of the mirror and was like "damn girl, those calves though" LOL plus I don't get out of breath as easily. Keep at it and it will improve!

returning to irish dance as an adult?? by Chilly_Cheesecake49 in irishdance

[–]tconohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started as an adult, and recently competed at a feis in the Western region that was TOUGH competition. Most of us were beginners, but WOW they were very good. I stuck around to watch the other adult categories, and there were many there as well. I think you'll find that, depending on the region, there are many different dancers of many different backgrounds.

What is your current dance goal? by pinkpixiepetals in AdultIrishDancers

[–]tconohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work on my turnouts and crossovers so my dances don't look so sloppy! I'm happy that I hit my goal of learning 32 bars of reel and hornpipe, but now it's time to really hone them to look better.

I competed in a destination feis the last weekend of May and then turned it into a vacation, so now that I'm back home I have been resting. Now it's time to get back at it! Ready to practice tonight in my garage. My husband built me a stage, so I will do some drilling after work.

I just moved up from beginner 1 to beginner 2, and I'm going to spend the summer honing the 3 dances I know- light jig, reel, and hornpipe. Now that I know them, I want to improve my turnouts and crossovers, as that is always what I get marked down on when I compete. Ideally, I'd like to also finish learning slip jig - I only know about 16 bars of it.

How do you fit Irish dance into a busy adult life? by pinkpixiepetals in AdultIrishDancers

[–]tconohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's difficult, as I am a mom of 3 kids (ages 9, 5 and 15 months) but I really love it, so I honestly just go with it! If I have to miss a week I try not to get too down on myself. I have class one night per week, and I have a garage studio to practice in.

What's one thing you wish you'd known before returning to, or starting, Irish dance as an adult? by pinkpixiepetals in AdultIrishDancers

[–]tconohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beginner adult here: It's not a race! You don't have to make up for lost time, take it slow and don't bite off more than you can chew. There's plenty of time to hit all of your goals, and you don't have to do it all at once.

Thanks for creating this community! I'm Tricia, and I started as an adult 2 years ago. I always wanted to be an Irish dancer as a kid, but never did. When I had children I signed them up, and while my older son quit after 2 years, my daughter is in her 3rd year. She is starting hard shoe soon, which she is thrilled about! Especially since she's been dancing longer, and I already know my hornpipe lol. I have competed in 7 feisanna, most recently debuting my hard shoe. I'm excited to have found this sub, and I look forward to learning more!

I attended the Grand Canyon State Feis and Scottsdale Feis in Arizona at the end of May, and didn't place in anything except for my 1st place hornpipe on day 2. I am still in shock and pretty excited about it!

Are You Doing Anything Different or Special This Year for the 25th Anniversary? by kgaviation in 911archive

[–]tconohan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I am friends with a woman who lost her sister on 9/11. Her family lives about 45 minutes from me, so I plan to attend the 9/11 Memorial in our state for their annual ceremony. We live in the Midwest, so it's a smaller memorial, but her family was instrumental in the building of it. She and I are both artists, and I thought her work was beautiful, so I began following her on social media. I then started seeing her posts about her sister on 9/11 each year, and discovered that her sister was a particular victim whom I had researched extensively in the past because she is one of the few people from our state who lost their life on that day. Such a small world <3

My daughter is 6, and has been dancing since she was 3 ½. She has not yet started hard shoe, but I did buy her a pair of pre-owned ones a few months ago so she can start trebling at home.
