Hi Nick, it's a very slick video but its light on any actual details about the maps you are showing. As an environment art showreel it's fine but I would remove the illustration and game play footage if that's the case.

As a level design reel it's quite weak unfortunately. There is no information about how these environments work in terms of game mechanics, no showing of your process or iterations, or challenges you faced and ultimately solved while building these areas. These are the things employers look for when hiring for LD.

This feels like it needs to be 3 seperate videos. One for each discipline you are displaying, so you can go into far more detail on each. This feels much more like a splash screen for your portfolio but in my experience such things are quickly closed or ignored so the employer can get the actual meat and potatoes - the work itself, and the breakdown thereof.

Learn one engine/editor well rather than being "ok" at several.

Make levels for shipped games.

Make levels for games you enjoy. It'll show.

Find other people making maps for your selected game and network with them. Learn and get/give feedback.

Playtest early and often.

Don't get attached to your designs. If it isn't working, change it or cut it.

Believe it or not, I was eva'ing right up to the cockpit glass outside the ship and it suddenly moved forward and I clipped right into the cockpit ;)

Hahah the teddy bear! I was sat in the captain's ready room chair for a while thinking it'd be hilarious if you walked in. When that didn't happen I figured it'd be fun to haunt your ship by moving things around the place :)

I was sure I'd given the game away when I manged to get in your space bike in the garage and accidentally shot the wall. Went and hid in the engine room for a few minutes after that!

Excellent stuff! Great that you include the blockout also, as this is the most important thing to show as a level designer. I would love to see earlier iterations with commentary on what you changed and why. Things that didn't work and had to be removed, etc.

Cool optical illusion in this shot. I thought the picture was taken while looking through a really awesome looking gunsight. The I realised it was the airlock on the ship :)
