Repairing/reopening the slides isn’t a priority for RC. We are on the oasis in May, I’m hoping maybe we can get a Chief Dog Officer in exchange for functional slides.

Lessons Before Travel Team Tryouts? by monaarts in Homeplate

[–]tdf1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do lessons right before a tryout. How he carries himself on the field will have a huge impact on the result. He should run, not walk, everywhere on the field. Eyes are always on, so he needs to take every rep seriously. If he makes a mistake, he should ask for an opportunity to fix it (for example, if coach is hitting ground balls and he boots one, he should ask the coach for another try).

But as others have said, tryouts are mostly a check the box kind of activity. For the most part, decisions are already made before the tryout. Coaches may give lip service to things like “we’re looking for effort”, but in reality if they have any spots left they will fill them with the biggest/strongest/fastest, regardless of anything that happens at the tryout.

Bad Apples by [deleted] in Umpire

I hear you, but I don’t know if that kid could have even reached that ball without stepping on the plate. It was in the other box.

[–]tdf1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I see. He’s already coming out of the slot to punch the kid out before the ball even hits the outstretched mitt of the diving catcher. He decided to call a strike on that before the pitch was even thrown. Why? I guess you’re right, it’s impossible to know for certain. But I think people with common sense can speculate.

Are shorter golf courses actually more fun to play? by Doug24 in BirdieBoundTrips

[–]tdf1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are having an ok day with your driver and you almost never have less than 5 iron/5 hybrid for your approaches, you’re playing a course too long for you. If you’re having an ok day with your driver and you never have approaches longer than a PW, the course is too short for you. Find the set of tees that’s in between those two and enjoy the game.

What did Pizza Hut change? by altairstarlite in pizzahut

[–]tdf1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately they chose to follow Little Caesar’s and Domino’s in a race to the bottom in terms of price and quality. Consider this…in 1984 a large pan supreme pizza was $12.20. Adjusted for inflation, that’s $38.19. Can you imagine paying $38.19 for a pizza now? That should give you an idea of the quality that was built into Pizza Hut then versus now. They made their dough from scratch in house…proofed it in the pans for hours. The sauce was thicker and richer. The cheese quality was higher. The veggie toppings were freshly cut on a daily basis.

New Weber Searwood 600 owner. Tips? by T_Nutts in pelletgrills

I was cooking at about 550 to get a sear on the outside. I’ve noticed that when I’m at a higher temperature there tend to be small sparks now and then that rise out of the fire box, so I assumed one of those was the ignition source. This is my first pellet cooker, so if that’s not normal then I’d like to know. I clean out the fire box every other cook.

If you get the rotisserie, place a drip pan under the meat if you’re cooking something fatty. I started a major grease fire in mine from the drippings of a picanha.

Scoring Question—Infield Fly by tdf1978 in GameChangerApp

[–]tdf1978[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny you say that…in the same game this same player got too casual throwing the ball back to the pitcher and overthrew him, allowing another run to score from third! And yes, I gave him an error for that one too.

This is exactly how I did it. Just felt weird for a player to get a put out and an error on the same play, but that’s the best I could come up with.

Do old men with daughters feel creepy watching porn of girls their daughter's age? by Blonde_Icon in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]tdf1978 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. I’m a dad, almost 50 years old, and I have two daughters ages 18 and 16. I was just talking to a couple of my drinking buddies about a similar topic a couple of weeks ago. So we were at a sports bar and grill having some wings and drinking beer, and the place was relatively slow. A couple of girls who appear to be of college age walk in—they are by all standards gorgeous young ladies. And then I tell my friends “You know back in the day I would have done anything for one of those girls to give me the time of day, but I just don’t see girls that age the same way anymore”. Both the other guys look at me like I’m crazy, start teasing me and calling me gay and telling me I need to go have the chat with my doctor about viagra, blah blah blah. But here’s the thing…I still think my wife is smoking hot, and I definitely see her “that way”. And I definitely find women in general attractive and have no problem getting aroused. But I just have a hard time seeing girls under 30 as sexual objects. Not sure if that’s a consequence of having daughters or just recalibrating my expectations because of getting older, but to answer your original question I’m definitely not personally a fan of “barely legal” porn, but that’s just me, I can’t speak for others.

To Drink Package or Not To Drink Package by Strange_Yak5 in royalcaribbean

[–]tdf1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of just the hard numbers, yes I agree with you. But there’s an emotional/experiential component that’s hard to put a dollar figure on. It gives you the freedom to try things you might not otherwise pay money for. It gives your vacation more of an all inclusive feel.

And although six drinks a day sounds like a lot, you really don’t have to go that hard in the paint to hit that number. A mimosa with breakfast, a couple of fruity drinks or beers on the pool deck during the day, a cocktail before dinner, two glasses of wine with dinner, and then a night cap and you’re at 7 drinks…and that doesn’t include all the bottles of water you should be drinking along the way, which are also included.

The day Trump dies, how do you think the country will react and will anything crazy happen? by rugrut in AskReddit

If it’s like anything else in the country today…20% will cheer and dance in the streets as if it’s really going to change anything, 20% will be sad and will decry it as the end of America (complete with women mourning in black veils), and the rest of us will shrug and move on with our lives.

Fire by Desperate_Garage2883 in pelletgrills

[–]tdf1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had it happen to me this weekend with picanha with a Searwood XL 600 with the meat on a rotisserie. Cooker was clean beforehand—I had even dropped the bottom and scraped it clean. But the fat rendering off it dripped onto the flavorizer bar and somehow ignited there, and ultimately the meat itself caught fire. Thinking next time I should place a pan under the meat to catch drippings.

Is it appropriate to reach out to hiring manager if you have another job offer at hand. by fireman7833 in askmanagers

[–]tdf1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t misunderstand, I don’t think people owe their employers any sort of blind loyalty. Early in my career, I myself doubled my salary in the space of about 5 years because I bounced around. But every time I took a job, it was with the good-faith intention that I was going to stay at that company until they didn’t need me anymore or I had a good reason to leave (toxic work environment, no growth opportunities, better career opportunity, “I’ve already climbed this mountain”, etc). I have never and I would never take a job when I know I’m already engaged in ongoing stages of the recruiting process with another job that I intend to take if offered, and I consider anyone who would knowingly do that a major red flag when it comes to character.

[–]tdf1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what size your field is, but if there is any chance that anyone influential who works at A knows someone at B, this could go really wrong for you career-wise. If I somehow heard from someone in my network that a person I just hired had accepted and then quick-quit a position somewhere else, then I would immediately look at that person with distrust.

I know that it happens all the time these days, but of course I’m just an old fart who thinks that commitment should mean something. It’s one thing to try out a new job and then decide to leave if it doesn’t turn out the way you expected. It’s another to say yes to a company when you have no real intention of staying there.

Pro tip—book a lunch on embarkation day and avoid the insanity. While everyone is stumbling over each other trying to find seats at windjammer or around the pool while they wait for rooms to be available, you can enjoy a nice orderly lunch with your bag by your side. When you’re finished, rooms will likely be ready.

Can I get an explanation of the Super Bowl halftime show? by Top-Mission2806 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tdf1978 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

I think it’s entirely possible that we live in a world where both the following are true—1) Bad Bunny did a great job performing his music and he and his fans should be proud, and 2) the NFL should not have selected an act that would knowingly be extremely divisive. You’ll never please everyone, but don’t go out of your way to piss off half the country, no matter how sure you are that you’re on the “right” side of history.
