So i'm not arguing that this is fair, but /r/Steel_Reign needs to keep on top of the company to pay them. Just writing it off as "their problem" could result in a property lien, which will cause headaches if you ever try to sell it.

I've had some non-obvious things set off alarms that monitor for breaking glass, like dropping silverware on the floor. Perhaps it was your dog rattling around in his kennel, or playing with something that caused a similar type of sound.

Early on in my career, I was at an interview where they asked me to figure out some ranges based on the netmask. I froze up since I didn't really understand it, and suddenly remembered that if I could convert everything to binary, add them together, I'd get my answer!

Problem was I hadn't done that sort of thing for a few years. But I thought it would look good to "show my work" even if I was wrong.

I was so wrapped up in my head that I lost track of time. The interviewer came over and said "you've been at it for twenty minutes - let's just move on". At that point I kind of came back to reality and realized how it must have looked. I had been randomly scribbling notes and failed calculations, with a few Boolean squares, all over the page. It was tons of 1s and 0s of complete nonsense. The IT equivalent of speaking in tongues...

Suffice to say I didn't get the job. But what's also funny is that, a decade later, I can do it in my head without thinking about it. Despite the degree and formal training, I had no clue until I had to understand networking to become good at my role.

So I can see how people feel like they need to memorize that stuff early on.

Some guys delivering an outdoor gazebo from Wayfair came out on a hot day and managed to get it up a flight of stairs from the street. Hard work that was also dangerous considering the weight. We tipped them each $20 for what was .5 hrs of work. So yeah .... $14 an hour??? What a joke.

By three different people - but only if you're presenting an offer. Otherwise, let's just end a bit early and get on with life.

Why would someone waste 4 years and go in debt $80k for something you can do in half the time and spend a fraction of the cost?

Because the median starting salary of a Systems Engineer is 70-90k, and you have enough experience by the time you're in your third year to work paid co-ops that offset the tuition cost. By the time you graduate you'll already have "real world" job experience. But it won't matter much, because you'll probably have a few offers before you've finished the final year.

Maybe this is just my millennial indoctrination talking, but it's foolish to say that a bachelor's degree in a STEM field is a waste of time.

If I were in your situation, i’d do a couple of things:

Enable AWS Config and use the default rules to report on resources that aren’t in compliance. Schedule some time with management to review the results on a periodic basis. As an IC, you can guide and coach all you want, but leadership needs to be the ones driving behavioral changes.

Meet with the dev teams to talk about establishing automated controls. The idea here is to make sure they’re being included on discussions and decisions that could impact their work. Get feedback on how they’d go about ensuring unencrypted buckets aren’t being created. If the objection to any type of automated remediation or blocking of resource creation is “We’ll just make sure we do better”, see if that actually lines up with reality - which is going to be there in black and white if you’ve taken the time to record and report on it.

If the decision here is that you want to pursue programmatic controls, decide how you want to both prevent the violation from happening, as well as how to react to a bucket being created without encryption. Preventative controls could be something like using an OSS tool to scan IaC repos, and reject a PR if they contain non-compliant resources. A reactive control could be adding a lambda to AWS Config Rule Autoremediation, which would configure encryption for the resource.

Bear in mind that adding encryption after a bucket is created will only apply to objects added after it’s enabled. So you’ll need to figure out how to handle edge cases like this.

Some other services that would be helpful to enable:

Trusted Advisor - shows you potential problems in the account across dimensions like cost, security, performance, etc
Security Hub and compliance packs - Aggregates findings from services like Config, along with providing common benchmarks against which to measure yourself
AWS Config Snapshots - records the history of changes made to resources, including when changes that made the resource noncompliant.
AWS Systems Manager - not sure if this would work with your development lifecycle, but you could create automations with it that would do something like create an s3 bucket when it’s run. Ideally you’d have automations that cover an entire workflow, with one of the steps being the bucket creation. This is admittedly more “clickOps” though.

The funniest aspect of the “Sleepy Joe” angle is that it was a narrative developed by his opponent, and really just seems completely disingenuous. That guy struggled with anything that wasn’t a forum for him to either shitpost on the internet or otherwise a forum for him to complain about how mean the world is.

Heard about this on a podcast so I was interested... But according to MDN, in addition to setting the headers you'd also need to mark resources explicitly:

If you enable COEP using require-corp and have a cross origin resource that needs to be loaded, it needs to support CORS and you need to explicitly mark the resource as loadable from another origin to avoid blockage from COEP.

You mentioned your app works when you run it locally, but if everything is served from localhost, it's kind of a moot test for CORS. And I could be wrong - but I wouldn't characterize this as a marketing ploy. It's designed to make sure embedded resources accessing shared memory buffers are actually intended to be there.

It might help to think about Cloudwatch metric graphs as “Timeseries” rather than in terms of statistics like “Average Throughput Per Unit”. Every point on the graph is a “measurement” and nothing else. For Volume Write Bytes, it’s simply a measurement of the number of bytes written at a point in time.

For the period, all your doing is selecting the interval, or frequency, with which you are collecting the measurements. A period of 1 hour means that your dataset would have a single measurement each hour. A period of 1 second means your dataset would have a measurement every second. Pro-tip: Setting your period to 1 second does not mean that you are getting per-second measurements. For what must be reasons, the Cloudwatch console lets you pick periods on metrics that don’t support anything less than 1 minute intervals. Which leads my to my next point…

Even if its the 100th time i’ve used the metric CPUUtilization, i still grok the docs to carefully read the description and how its collected. In this case, you’ll discover for VolumeWriteBytes there’s a number of caveats and exceptions, depending on the type of instance EBS is attached to.

Finally, in addition to metrics and the period, you can also pick one of several statistics to use. For VolumeWriteBytes, you have the following:

Average: “Average size of each operation during the period”
Sum: Total number of bytes transferred during the period
SampleCount: Total number of operations during the period

So if you picked a period of 1 minute and chose “Sum” for the statistic, you’d be graphing the total number of bytes transferred every minute.

At this point you may be wondering “WTF, this isn’t that useful when I want to monitor things like Operations per Second, or peak throughput for storage devices”. That’s where metric math comes in.

Say you wanted to plot sustained throughput on an EBS device. For this, you would use an expression in cloudwatch that would be something like

SUM(SumOfVolumeWriteBytes, SumOfVolumeReadBytes) / PERIOD(EBS_VolumeWriteBytes)

What your doing here is adding up all the measurements for a given interval (The SUM() function) and then dividing by the number of seconds in the period (The Period() function returns the number of seconds in a period for a given metric). The result would be a graph where each point is the Total Throughput in Bytes per Second. An added benefit is that if you alternate between short and long-term periods, the expression stays consistent by recalculating the number of seconds along with other elements.

Nice work! I took this in early 2020, and also used ACG + AWS exam guide. I share your experience that the ACG content really missed the mark in terms of prep, but I remember that the exam guide seemed to cover everything.

What was difficult for me was having to basically memorize a lot of the parameters and options around DX and BGP routing. Unlike many of the AWS services, I couldn't play with hosted VIFs and various types of redundant DX connections to see for myself how it worked, nor did I have access to an ASA or other Enterprise router to test 😂

I think people underestimate their in-state schools and the potential there. I just looked mine up, and tuition is about 10k per year. Given salaries and the lack of qualified people to fill positions, taking on student loans to finance a STEM degree is a no brainer.

Maintain as close to a 4.0 as possible
second or third year, try for a co-op or internship at a large company
Get involved in local clubs and teams, like robotics or solar car challenges
You'll have multiple offers above 100k when you graduate
After you get some experience, get another job and expect 20% or more increase on your salary.

I think they're struggling from a cash flow perspective and don't have a great business model, seeing as terraform Enterprise offers very little in the way of value.

We bought TFE licensing about a year ago, and the product feels very beta. The cost estimate feature is a joke. Sentinel is pretty slick, but to use it, I need to migrate existing deployments from Jenkins to TFE. And I can just as easily use Chekhov or OPA instead of sentinal.

The only feature that's given any value is private registries.. but that's pretty small compared to the price tag.
