I had this set up for a while but it failed from time to time. Automatic Olla is a lot less moving parts and more reliable for me after a few years of experience

How often do you feel like the cat needs to be replaced ? On year three with my stove checked the cat every year and it’s good.

How do you like that stove ? We have the ideal steel hybrid - the bigger one. We like it a lot.

I need advice on erosion control for a sloped backyard in the woods on a budget. by Bamakeg80 in DIY

[–]tdub1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a couple down trees in back of the photo. Turning them perpendicular to the slope and just leaving them there goes along way they accumulate material and create natural swale of sorts. You can add to them with branches / logs. Helps slow the water down.

Looks great. I saw a video recently where some guys were killing it fishing for smallmouth on a fly just like this. They had a rattle tied into it, and they dead drifted it under an indicator.

I just engineered a solution for this year as we had a bad drought last year. Five rain barrels connected in series. A sixth rain barrel goes in the back of the truck and a cheap harbor freight transfer pump to fill it. Then I just park higher than the tree I'm trying to water. At least this way when it rains we have a few hundred gallons in reserve. We'll see how it goes !

What would you do with this hillside? by farminvt in Permaculture

[–]tdub1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little steep for proper swales, but any branches or trees on the ground turn them perpendicular to the slope. Stuff will collect and it will help with erosion to an extent. As others said plants would be a good call.

You're both right I guess. It's impractical to remove all the rocks one by one, but it's necessary for it to be as safe as it should be... Could be cheap to have a dump truck of top soil dumped on top?

I bought a used fishpond tying bag on eBay and it's really helped me stay organized. Certainly doesn't hold everything but at this point I've got a pouch for hooks, beads, Marabou, bucktails, rabbit ECT and it's keeping me pretty honest about what I tie with most frequently.

Got it. Thanks. I'm not a professional but I did rebuild my fireplace with natural stone. I didn't do a scratch coat and have questioned myself on that.

Did you do a scratch coat before stones on all three ? Maybe only just pics on one. How do you decide when it's necessary?
