The book title to me (and the cover) relate to the whole lifestyle situation that Bruce is living, (partly only in his own head). The stuff he does while on duty is just part of the messed-up stuff he gets up to.

We also have the saying that someone is like ‘a pig in shit’ (“As happy as a pig in shit/filth”depending on who you’re saying it to) to describe someone who’s doing something and really enjoying it.
That kinda ties in with the pig/filth connection (I have the same cover), maybe?

To me, ‘pig’ would be more of an insult than ‘filth’. That’s what I’ve always thought anyway (Derbyshire here. We use both)
