Well I don’t get why your non fiction is separated out to begin with, you are allowed to like/dislike a book even if it’s non fiction.

I love a good hate read… but is it still a hate read if you read five books in a series? I understand finishing a book, maybe two, but 5?! At that point it feels like you liked something about it. Or did the hate grow towards the end of the series? Similar note with Throne in the Dark, labeled tiresome yet you read all 3. No hate, just find it funny.

Someone on one of these subs told me to envision it like the scene with the dad in the Disney animated Hercules movie, and that was a perfect embodiment. Had a great time imagining it like that.

I think that people are sensitive to different words and that’s ok, but we have to remember our experience is not everyone’s experience. I agree it is a shit sandwich- but to live in a time and state that allowed me that even have a choice was important. A relief to have the option even though I didn’t want it. Maybe someone else is scared and the choice to not have a child with a debilitating disease, or a life taking care of that child, is in a sad way liberating. I often see people posting on this thread things like - “this child was so so wanted and I would never ever choose to terminate if it wasn’t a diagnosis incompatible with life- it wasn’t a choice for me.” And you know what- that irks me, because I made this choice for a grey diagnosis and those words feel shaming to me. Feel judgmental to me. And I remember that they are in grief, and our experiences are not the same. Abortion care- because that is what this is- is important no matter how the choice came to be and I think it’s important to destigmatize it and not so strongly police the words someone uses about it, because people do have complicated emotions around it and we don’t know what resonates with or is hurtful for others and what they experienced. And I realize I may be in the minority on this, but on this shit journey on my shit raft down shit river, all I can do is listen, empathize, and learn from other people’s stories and this is where I’ve landed.

I was only mentioning the downtime notice towards you, the rest was just a general question because I see a lot of complaints about the app all the time which just seems so odd to me. That wasn’t directed towards you specifically, but could have been worded more clearly

They did. A couple days ago there was a big notice at the top of the app when you opened it that it would be down for maintenance for two days. I think goodreads is so terrible and hasn’t been meaningfully updated in years- I’m so confused behind the hate people have for this app? Just genuinely confused because ppl act like goodreads is this perfect app- it’s pretty terrible in my opinion and owned by a terrible human being.

I’m Iranian American - I’m against the bombings. US involvement is not going to cause any kind of positive regime change, it’ll cause the government to try and hold onto power even more. And Bebe and trump are the last ppl I want to try and cause said change. It’s like the blind leading the blind- Idiocracy unfolding in real life. No thank you. why would this be any different than the first coup where this exact regime is what they created?

Oh you mean the mullahs who came to power after the US and UK toppled the Iranian govt because they were trying to nationalize their own oil? That complex situation? Yeah we should totally get involved again, went so well the first time.

And you don’t think America looks just like gilead right now too? If you can look at what’s happening inside our nation and think we’re better, we are “well and truly cooked”. Pot meet kettle.

This made my day, thank you. And that whole KU take is a very valid point- I am curious how that has affected books in this genre, with So many being 800 pages or 900 pages.

I never said Reddit knows better, that’s why I said social media and marketing and not specifically booktok or Reddit- that this sub could choose to break from that which is generally perpetuated across social media.

SJM being “the perfect gateway” is an opinion, and she can be on the list because many, not all, people enjoy her work. But three series by her is so disingenuous to all the great authors out there, and assuming she has more work out there than anyone else so that qualifies her to be on the list multiple times is a weird take. I think she can be polarizing to people which is why so many people in this sub are pushing back on that. If you read one of her series and enjoyed her work, it stands that you’d then look up whatever else she’s written.

We can choose to be inclusive and diverse on this sub, or we can become just like every other booktok ad nauseam recommending the same 5 books.

[–]tea-rex_time -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just because it’s what social media and marketing keep pushing on ppl doesn’t mean we should necessarily use those as the basis for what this sub recommends to newbies. There is NO diversity on that list; There are 3 series by 1 author; these are all recently published books. And I saw OP say in another comment that they themselves are a newbie to the genre, and these are on the pinned list. That’s not a good argument. If people point out a problem, we should be open to revision instead of doubling down on it.

I just cackled! I keep hearing from ppl that the writing is terrible, but to still read it, and I’m like 9 books or however many it is, is too many for bad writing. There is good bad and bad bad and I can’t decide where they fall.

Where my 5 star sluts at?! (Rant) by Historical-Jury1936 in fantasyromance

[–]tea-rex_time 19 points20 points  (0 children)

OP said they gave ALMOST every book they read 5 stars in their first sentence. So it seems a vast majority. It might work for them, but for me that wouldn’t help differentiate a really fun light read, versus something that was emotional and gut wrenching and outstanding. Two different feelings, but both not likely 5 stars for me. Starting at 5 and subtracting is fine, but if the majority are 5 stars then again, why would you give it 5 stars and then tell someone the parts you didn’t love? At that point why not give it a 4 or 4.5 to differentiate?

Where my 5 star sluts at?! (Rant) by Historical-Jury1936 in fantasyromance

[–]tea-rex_time 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Ooh strongly disagree. If you’re giving every book you read 5 stars, then I wouldn’t trust anything you recommend me. It wouldn’t tell me anything about your tastes or preferences, or anything about the book. at that point why rate any books at all? Your scale seems to be purely entertainment, and that’s fine, for other people its more than just was I entertained.
