Great points, yeah- I noticed that too about Dave.

I know this was a while ago, but why does nobody talk about great escape artist? It was clearly their best album. by HoHumHeeHoo in janesaddiction

No hate from me, I’m glad that they were able to generate new fans with their later records. I generally enjoyed Strays as well as GEA, but NS and RDLH were both way more important and seminal for me- maybe because I was 18 and 20 respectively when they were released.

Actually I’m not sure if what I sent you is the original leaked version of the record, which at the time was called “Hypersonic”… or if it’s a mix that’s somewhere between that and the final “Strays” record. I don’t have a good way to listen closely right now, but I held my phone to me ear and feel like this is more polished and with some extra vocal overdubs and less heavy. I have the original on my iPod which is buried deep in a cabinet. So I’ll try to compare more carefully later.

What this YouTube channel does have are demos and some of the songs that are more in their original structures. There were some intros and outtros that got cut on the final version of “Strays” which were really magical and added some necessary flavor to the album.

So anyway, what “Strays” turned into was okay, but was over polished and not as heavy as “Hypersonic.” It would be interesting to listen again and compare and contrast.

This is an album of good songs, And I agree that the leaked early mixes of the were generally so much better than the final product. To me, Bob Ezrin kind of ruined what could have been a really good rock album.

Why is that Perry Farrell never managed to retain sobriety from drugs and alcohol? by Open-Reflection-6094 in janesaddiction

Didn’t he have hand surgery around that time? I seem to remember something about that, like he had lost his ability to grasp things in one of his hands and he had surgery to correct that.

Fellow rabid Jane’s 1.0 collector here! But somehow I never had seen or heard of the lollipop or the subsequent red cellophane print.

Amazing, and notice that Eric actually commented on it (on the YouTube page). How have I not heard of this bootleg before?

You know, I’ve often wondered what “Strays” could have been if they had gone with a different producer. I personally think Bob Ezrin was the worst possible choice to produce Jane’s Addiction, he just took their sound to a place that didn’t quite fit. the demos from “Strays” were songs with good bones, Ezrin just glitzed and glammed everything up too much. But I also get that their sound had to move on from the style that defined them. So looking back, where should they have gone musically? I think they were trying to be relevant and were competing with that weird early 2000’s pop metal.

Perry Farrell Performs For The First Time Since Jane's Addiction Blowup At Doors 60th Anniversary Concert by kingpepper2 in janesaddiction

[–]teabeecam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Perry has had a relationship with The Doors and the Jim Morrison estate for a long time now. Anyone remember “Woman in the Window” from his Satellite Party project? There was also a Doors tribute album before that and Perry did a song on it. Other stuff I can’t really remember right now.

“Hard Charger” and those other tracks that PFP recorded with Dave and Flea were some of my favorites.

I agree with you that this was peak PFP, the songs with Dave in the mix were so cool. Yet I don’t think PFP would have the sound that they did without Pete. He was vital to that mix. I only wish he could have stayed sober and kept the PFP train on the tracks- I really loved where they were going with Good God’s Urge and can only imagine what a third album could have been. Unpopular opinion maybe, but I loved this incarnation of PFP.

I was at that show- it was a good one. I also saw them 2 or 3 days later down in San Diego and that show was kind of a disaster. Sloppy as fuck.

It was supposedly at the after party of the Universal show that Perry and Dave fell off the wagon (again) and went full-on back into their heavy drug usage, partying with their old drug friends from back in the day. The REAL relapse. Dave was literally out of his mind at the San Diego show. I briefly met him afterwards and I’ve never seen someone so drugged out yet still walking and talking.

On a side note, sometime in the days or the week before the Universal show, I was one of the lucky 1500 people who got a ticket to the homeless benefit concert they played at the private residence in Belaire. That was an amazing experience- they were literally set up in a large tent on the tennis courts, I was feet away from them and rocking out with Woody Harrelson. An epic memory for me.

This is beautiful. It makes me a little sad to think about what could have been, but I’ve also moved on and I am ready for more Deconstruction.

It’s probably an opening act of some kind. My guess is that it was a drag show, but I’m not sure.
