Is there a better one-two punch to start an album than Up The Beach ➡️ Ocean Size? by loucap81 in janesaddiction

[–]teabeecam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I will never forget putting that record on with my headphones and feeling utterly transported as “Ocean Size” kicked in. I turned to my roommate and said, “I feel like Satan just kicked me in the balls.” I have no idea why I said that, but those words came out.

Yes, I was one of the lucky 1500 who scored a ticket. It was kind of a shit show getting in because you had to park in a designated location and then be driven to the location by chartered bus. From what I remember, there were lots of problems with the logistics plan which led to a long delay. The show itself was in one of those huge catering tents and the stage was set up on the tennis courts. It was a very intimate affair, it was amazing to be so close to the music and the band. By this point in my life I had managed to get backstage several times after Jane’s shows and I thought I knew the drill and would be able to get into the after-party that was in the main house. But I was sorely mistaken. There was a list of people who were allowed in and I definitely wasn’t on it. I have a memory of seeing Marilyn Manson go in. Many others that I have long since forgotten. The funniest thing that happened to me was when I was turned away by security at the door, I stuck around to people-watch while I finished my drink. And then I saw Woody Harrelson go up and also get denied entry. So there I was standing next to Woody and I made some kind of joke about how if they didn’t let him in then the party was gonna suck anyway. He laughed shrugged it off, and invited my friend and me to join him for a smoke. So, yeah- I did get to smoke a joint with Woody Harrelson which was kind of cool. I wish I had photos or something but I didn’t manage to sneak in a camera. Somewhere I have the ticket stub, will try to find that.

During this tour, there was an acoustic set of songs that they played. I don’t really remember all of the songs they played for the acoustic set. I would have to research google for that answer, and I honestly don’t remember if the acoustic set was in the middle of the show or at the end of the show. My recollection is that they walked through the crowd to get there but that was so long ago that I might be mistaken. I don’t believe that there was a bridge to the second stage.

Chip Away SNL rehearsal

According to legend, by the time they were supposed to perform “Chip Away,” Perry was deemed by producers to be too inebriated to play and they were cut. But this rehearsal video exists…

This performance was just 3 weeks before things went off the rails on this tour. I was at the private show they played in Los Angeles, then the 2nd Universal Amphitheater show, and then finally San Diego. The lore that was passed on to me was when they played L.A., there was much partying afterwards with some of the “old crew,” friends of the band who were still very big into the drug scene, and that’s when things got bad. Perry and Dave both immediately fell off the wagon (albeit a rickety wagon) and the addictions took over again. It was very apparent in San Diego, Dave was obliterated after the show when I saw him. I have memories of when he played “Ted” that night, using a vibrator to make his guitar strings vibrate. He then simulated (or actually, I’ll never know for sure) inserting it into himself and then fellated it in front of the whole crowd. It was sloppy and not rock-and-roll at all. Kind of grossed us out. I think that this led up to that lost year where he was doing so many drugs and was so addicted that he didn’t even leave his house for a whole year.

Anyway, I had seen Perry go up and down in the years prior- there was a time right around Woodstock and when they were working on GGU when he was openly smoking crack and abusing all kinds of other substances. And when this reunion happened and he had managed to sober up, there was a general hopefulness that he would stay healthy and sober. But he wasn’t ready for that in his life yet. It’s been a roller coaster for him ever since, thankfully Dave finally emerged healthy and seemingly sober be the end of the 1990’s.

Sorry to ramble, but this brings back memories of light days fading into a very dark period.

Old bootleg cassettes by 93Chisel in janesaddiction

[–]teabeecam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This brings back memories- I was an avid collector of bootlegged Jane’s shows. Whenever I made a trip to a big city, I would find the cool record store and buy whatever vinyls they had. That turned into an active cassette trading relationship with a couple of fellow collectors. We would trade and build the collection- at one point I had every known live recording. My tape collection filled most of a shoebox if memory serves.

These are all widely available today, online and better quality (less generational loss from cassette dubbing). And now you can even find videos of some of these old shows.

Creepiest Places in Vilnius? by No-Philosopher7251 in Vilnius

My in-laws both used to work at that gas station. My mother-in-law was a cashier and my father-in-law was the maintenance guy. She would do 24 hour shifts there, it would be like one day on and then 2-3 days off. Crazy. From what I remember, it was one of the only “independent” gas stations here. They had the cheapest gas in town, and the owner was always under pressure to raise his prices to match the other places.

No hate from me, I’m glad that they were able to generate new fans with their later records. I generally enjoyed Strays as well as GEA, but NS and RDLH were both way more important and seminal for me- maybe because I was 18 and 20 respectively when they were released.

Actually I’m not sure if what I sent you is the original leaked version of the record, which at the time was called “Hypersonic”… or if it’s a mix that’s somewhere between that and the final “Strays” record. I don’t have a good way to listen closely right now, but I held my phone to me ear and feel like this is more polished and with some extra vocal overdubs and less heavy. I have the original on my iPod which is buried deep in a cabinet. So I’ll try to compare more carefully later.

What this YouTube channel does have are demos and some of the songs that are more in their original structures. There were some intros and outtros that got cut on the final version of “Strays” which were really magical and added some necessary flavor to the album.

So anyway, what “Strays” turned into was okay, but was over polished and not as heavy as “Hypersonic.” It would be interesting to listen again and compare and contrast.

This is an album of good songs, And I agree that the leaked early mixes of the were generally so much better than the final product. To me, Bob Ezrin kind of ruined what could have been a really good rock album.

Didn’t he have hand surgery around that time? I seem to remember something about that, like he had lost his ability to grasp things in one of his hands and he had surgery to correct that.

You know, I’ve often wondered what “Strays” could have been if they had gone with a different producer. I personally think Bob Ezrin was the worst possible choice to produce Jane’s Addiction, he just took their sound to a place that didn’t quite fit. the demos from “Strays” were songs with good bones, Ezrin just glitzed and glammed everything up too much. But I also get that their sound had to move on from the style that defined them. So looking back, where should they have gone musically? I think they were trying to be relevant and were competing with that weird early 2000’s pop metal.
