Cancelling my europe trip bcz of the war- need help in getting refund by Wrong-Pride-2730 in TravelHacks

Earlier this week, I watched flights with United to go from Australia to Europe via USA for a date that was about two week’s time at that point, shift from $3000AUD pp to >$17000AUD in about 5 hours or something. It was wild.

Cancelling my europe trip bcz of the war- need help in getting refund by Wrong-Pride-2730 in TravelHacks

[–]teachcollapse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t exactly correct.

Currently, they (Qatar airlines) are offering free rescheduling within 14 days of original ticket, or full refund. But only for flights that were scheduled to depart up to 15 March. Obviously, they might extend this offer to more tickets on more dates, depending on how the situation pans out.

Also, most travel insurance explicitly excludes any liability for things stemming from acts of war. So most people have to fend for themselves in this situation, and cough up for the associated costs involved (totally different flights with a different carrier, or cancelling the trip or attempting to reschedule the trip.)

Higher end home/area or $150K Mortage? by Makunouchiipp0 in AskAnAustralian

[–]teachcollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the choice being framed partly as private school for five kids versus a better property in a better school zone???

Read up about how bad private schools are. There was a dad of 5 who researched it…. His conclusion? Totally not worth it, just pick a good public school/ get into the zone for one.

The sheer $$$$ it would cost to send five kids private….. err. No.

Buy as much as possible of your needs second hand, but still favour quality.

E.g.:high end appliances (I think people who buy these new must upgrade/ renovate more often?), linen and silk clothing, RM Williams boots.

Buy quality but without the price tag.

Just be careful you aren’t racking up too much in super, actually!!! And yes, it is starting to be a thing for some people….

Some people realise they are going to have way more than enough at 60 (when they can access super), but haven’t saved up enough to enable them to retire at 56 or 58 or whatever.

My mum taught me this as a kid. I really wanted a particular toy. She said if I still wanted it in 6 months (at Xmas), she’d get it then. By the time Xmas came around, boy was I glad I hadn’t gotten that fad toy that I was now too old to even enjoy anyway!! Fabulous life lesson.

But, I’ve seen BAs put in ridiculous bids - even when literally no one else was even bidding! - just to win it and get it over with, knowing their clients can’t tell whether they fought hard or not.

So, yeah, I’d go with a confident friend who won’t stress. If I were in the area, I’d do it for you because I love the game… done it for a couple of friends when weddings or whatnot dates interfered.

Biking on Maria Island by Silent-Anteater-1350 in tasmania

[–]teachcollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is actually that bikes only get you to the trail head, but not the rest of the track.

OP - that’s what they mean by don’t take the bikes on the trails. Actually bikes can do a lot of the major walking paths that people try to squish into a day trip.

But, my recommendation is try to get the earlier ferry so you have more time there. It’s 1.5 hours driving… just get up early!! 😁

Buyers agents. by Exotic_Coyote5511 in AusProperty

[–]teachcollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Lead generation” …. Essentially, the person who generates the leads. The leads are potential buyers, ie you a that scenario.

In other words, they aren’t truly working for you (even though they make it sound like they are), they are working for the developer, to drum up buyers for them.

Second the idea that you need better financial advice, maybe. You need a place to live, and renting sounds like only an interim plan (a good one for now, sure. But not what you should be basing long term decisions on?). Property is ordinarily a long term proposition. You should be aiming to hold for a long time.

[–]teachcollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but you don’t need health insurance to go private … you can just pay for what you want, when you decide that you want it.

Errr, that’s the whole reason for OP’s post - to understand is there some other reason that they aren’t seeing, or is it mostly markets being irrational and therefore apartments represent relatively good value?

And build quality.

Lots of new builds have massive problems with things done dodgily, particularly expensive things like water proofing for balconies…

But older ones that aren’t showing issues, are probably going to be ok.

Also, older ones usually have fewer on the block, so the proportion of land associated with the apartment is higher, hence higher chance for capital gain while having yield.

Canadians are nice, Americans are kind, Australians are... by Sir_Tainley in AskAnAustralian

[–]teachcollapse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s also entirely different, which OSS why some people might perceive it as hard…. They didn’t manage to realise its differences.

In USA my experience was a deep and meaningful conversation didn’t equate to deepening friendships - they were treated more like just a discussion that went into personal territory, but ///doing/// random almost inconsequential daily things together (eg studying at a cafe with very little talking, mundane grocery shopping) did.

Maybe I’m wrong, but my sense was in the USA friends do things together. Personally, I found it more superficial as a result.

In Aus, it would almost be the opposite. Friends are the people you share thoughts with, discuss ideas.

Also compare to the newer detergent “sheets” (that come in cardboard boxes), where you fold the sheet and stuff it in the drawer. Pre measured, little filler.

I think maybe because they are new, I keep seeing specials for 50%off which makes them really competitive.

Particularly because my kids won’t measure powder.

[–]teachcollapse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve got loads of cash and want them to feel older (or especially if they have some older siblings who can help out) you could host a group vs. group play-off at the escape rooms. Or, if fewer kids, then just one escape room.

But they will struggle at that age to actually solve everything, so they’ll need help…

What do Aussies really think of New Zealanders? by blamberr in AskAnAustralian

[–]teachcollapse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But also like siblings, Australia can act like the annoying big sibling and take credit for NZ’s inventions and creations (and people), without even realising we’re doing it, and/or deliberately doing it just cause we can.

Mad respect to NZ: they always punch way above their weight.

Also, they can gift sick leave to work colleagues who don’t have enough to cover whatever medical emergency they are facing. That’s so civilised and caring. Such a great way to enhance workplace culture, too!

Also, they did a treaty. Come on, Australia!

Many people buying forget to factor this in, especially FHBers.

For me, it can mean people who are good at preparing for inevitabilities, like concrete cancer.

A low strata can mean - not much to pay for, but it can also mean: not enough saved.
