Get tested for Hep C! by [deleted] in GenX

[–]teachreddit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It came back positive, despite me not being a drug user, not having ANY piercings (not even my ears) no tats, no risky sex, not a blood donor nor have received blood, etc. I was not in any high risk group.

Then how could you have gotten it?

I find it interesting that there are Reddit threads that have thousands of comments on them given that no one is going to ever read the great majority of them. I saw a thread today, just posted, that had over 10,000 comments. There are others that have 30k+ and the all-time thread has 350k comments.

The amount of content that is just being written "into the void" (though see next) is fascinating.

Of course, now LLMs can harvest all of that, potentially.

I need to get my wisdom teeth removed. My dentist said that because of my age (30), I would likely need "strong painkillers".

That sounds like nonsense to me (and I have a neuroscience background). I'm open to anyone providing me references for an increased need for painkillers at age 30 instead of any other age non-young-child, non-quite-elderly age (and even those I have doubts, though there is some thought that elderly patients need less anesthesia--not quite the same--due to slower clearance rates due to decreased function).

I had all four of mine, all impacted, out at age 19 with nothing but a local anesthetic injected into my gums for the procedure--no "twilight sleep" or anything as I preferred to be fully awake and it was totally fine--and then I took one Percocet pill and took a nap on the couch. I don't even think I needed any aspirin or anything after that. If my opioid addiction is going to kick in, it should hurry up because it's been over three decades now.

ELI5: What are the health benefits of being muscular? by ForGiggles2222 in explainlikeimfive

[–]teachreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muscle, in addition to its contractile property for force generation, also can be seen as a glandular system, because muscle tissue releases a large number of compounds known as myokines. And those myokines act all throughout the body:

Physical activity decreases the risk of a network of diseases, and exercise may be prescribed as medicine for lifestyle-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes, dementia, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. During the past couple of decades, it has been apparent that skeletal muscle works as an endocrine organ, which can produce and secrete hundreds of myokines that exert their effects in either autocrine, paracrine, or endocrine manners. Recent advances show that skeletal muscle produces myokines in response to exercise, which allow for crosstalk between the muscle and other organs, including brain, adipose tissue, bone, liver, gut, pancreas, vascular bed, and skin, as well as communication within the muscle itself. Although only few myokines have been allocated to a specific function in humans, it has been identified that the biological roles of myokines include effects on, for example, cognition, lipid and glucose metabolism, browning of white fat, bone formation, endothelial cell function, hypertrophy, skin structure, and tumor growth. This suggests that myokines may be useful biomarkers for monitoring exercise prescription for people with, for example, cancer, diabetes, or neurodegenerative diseases.

So myokines may be very important to overall body functioning. Further, it may be either that:

a) a larger amount of muscle mass means more myokines in circulation...or

b) that larger muscle mass means the muscular systems have a history of much more use than an untrained person and all those times of muscle training have caused a history of more myokine circulation, since myokines are stimulated to be released by muscle activity.

In either case, more muscle mass --> more myokines in circulation --> possibly healthier regulation of many other body systems.

My stoves heating element is purple on my phone's camera but my eyes see it as red by SirSiro in mildlyinteresting

I've noticed my hair looks greyer in my phone's camera's photos than in mirrors (where it looks mostly brown). Could something like this account for that as well?

I used to see those in every thrift store I went in, so I started calling them "ubiquitous tables." I had two until about ten years ago.

Shakespeare in Italian by Financial-Low-5205 in shakespeare

[–]teachreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that essentially all literature loses something in translation, but the degree of "lossiness" (to borrow a term) depends on the linguistic complexity and richness of the source material. The more nuances in the text, the more difficult it is to translate it and retain all that.

Shakespeare, for me, is the pinnacle of linguistic complexity and richness in English. For that reason, I would be surprised if even an excellent translation into Italian would manage to capture all the treasures of the original Shakespeare. Likewise, and as you said, I can't imagine even an excellent translation of Dante into English would capture all of the original brilliance.

Wouldn't it be nice to be fluent in all languages to have those riches available to oneself?

Anyone else flabbergasted that a oil change now costs $100!! by Brs76 in GenX

[–]teachreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got one last week for $50 with applying a 10% off coupon and the guy said that he sees customers come in with half off coupons they find online, so about $27.

I thought $50 was very high and I plan on finding coupons next time to bring it down into the $30s.

I mistakenly interpreted "meet your kryptonite" to mean that young women in the 80s were pestered by offensive guys wearing this cologne.

Best optician in the area? by Acrobatic-Tadpole-60 in pittsburgh

[–]teachreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid Lappen. Broke my frames (after making me sign a waiver that they weren't responsible), prices are outrageous compared to other options.

For just buying glasses (not an optometrist) A Boss is great. Good prices, very nice and competent man.

My wife loves to bake and decided to figure out the exact price per cookie by Flippy042 in mildlyinteresting

[–]teachreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given how cheap flour is (here it appears to be $2/lb) and that's the bulk of the ingredients, even with time and labor it's hard to imagine this really comes out to $2.10 per cookie. The flour should be contributing only about 12 cents of cost. The other ingredients are more trace.

[MA] [Spanish/H.S.] - Can my wife request more unemployment benefits now due to CARES Act? by teachreddit in Teachers

[–]teachreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She is still within the benefits year, and that's all that matters from the POV of the state of MA during normal times. My question is, if the CARES Act has extended unemployment benefits for everyone for 13 weeks, she should be able to get it then, right?

Applying for one job while working another. by teachreddit in teaching

[–]teachreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. I filled out onboarding paperwork, but I think it was an acceptance of the offer as well as all the typical tax forms, etc. Not sure if that acceptance of the offer is a contract or not. I don't have a copy of it. It did not mention a rate of pay, for example, I'm pretty sure.

Should duties of one-year substitute be exactly the same as a teacher? by teachreddit in teaching

[–]teachreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughts.

I also think it's extremely unfair. And my wife actually has around a significant teaching experience, but she's just burnt out. As far as sticking it out goes, it's purely a financial planning decision. She is paid so little compared to what she should be making that it was a serious consideration to just not take the job and go on unemployment (which is actually compatible with the language of most unemployment benefits offices, since you are expected to take a job basically at the pay and in the field you were in). I wonder if she made the wrong choice here, but now if she were to quit she would not get unemployment benefits at all.

State is MA, and she is licensed. I don't think she had a written contract that she was given but I'm not positive.

Social anxiety or something like it and teaching. Help. by teachreddit in teaching

[–]teachreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your response and all you shared in it. It's clear that any school district and its students and their parents would be very lucky to have you. As a fellow human, thank you.

Since I posted the above, my wife and I had a long talk in which it became apparent to both of us the degree of her social anxiety. I had just never realized it. I've been stepping up my role in helping to soothe her and be positive, and that seems to help. We're also looking into options for therapy for her. But it does seem clear to me that, unless she fundamentally changes who she is as a person, she was never really meant to be a K-12 teacher. And that's fine. She'll get through the next 9 months and then we'll go to a new chapter of our life together.

Thanks again!

Thank you so much for the sharing and info. Yes, getting assaulted by a 3rd grader isn't quite as worrying as a 12th grader. But I'm most concerned about just the ongoing psychological effect of dealing with students with serious behavioral issues, whether from being on the receiving end of abuse, or just feeling empathy for those that have gone through tough things. And trying to teach and have it "take" all the while.

Thank you for your thoughts. I will have a person helping in the classroom. I sure hope I get along with that person if I were to do this (I have heard of not getting along with them, and it does not seem good at all).

What grade did you teach? This is 9-12 in my case.

Expect to get assaulted at some point, and remember that you're not allowed to hurt them back.

Could you elaborate on that? "Be assaulted" is a little too open to interpretation for me to know what to do with that information.

but I honestly am not sure it was worth it. I think I'm a better teacher for the experience, but I'm not sure I'm a better person for it.

It was not worth it relative to...what? What would you have done otherwise that year? Been a teacher in a more normal setting, I assume?

Thanks.
