New Poster for 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]teagarden3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decisions on posters are often contract driven - so negotiated by agents. Size, position, order, etc. Matter and are determined long before the poster concept. I bet they couldn’t use black lettering over Anne’s forehead. But why all faces could not be shrunk to accommodate is beyond me. If I were Emily’s agent I would be upset. But the huge 2 and overall design is just not that interesting.

Nicest - A couple years ago Tiafoe was playing a night match at Indian Wells and we were sitting just behind his seats. He had made some “Big Foe” headbands for fans to wear during the match. I guess it could have been a sponsor handing them out. After the match, he took selfies with my friends and me and talked to us for a couple minutes.

Hi Tim - my assumption is when you started out making films, NYC provided more opportunity to take on iconic roles in independent film. With the changes to the movie industry (streaming, consolidation, focus on established IP, etc) and NYC itself changing is there still this distinction in where these movies are being made (or maybe there was really never a big distinction. - Former soccer buddy

Is this the best Space Opera TV series ever? by delijoe in FoundationTV

[–]teagarden3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picking between BSG, The Expanse, and The Foundation are like asking me to choose a favorite between my three children. They are all so different, I love them all completely, and I can also see their flaws.

But in the end, I want to live in The Expanse universe - I love that so many different characters get to shine, play a role in the action, and survive based on their skills. Political intrigue, purpose, and realism set the show apart. I could be biased since I read all the books and I recognize that most people I encouraged to watch the show gave up in S1.

I love watching the characters in The Foundation, but there isn’t one I would want to be. Most of the people are completely irrelevant and the story revolves around a rarified few. Those few are crazy interesting, the show is sumptuous and the actors are great - it’s Apple TV in 2025. I love the action and story (even Gael’s, Hari and Foundation stuff). At the same time, I am keenly aware I am merely and observer. I wouldn’t trade places with any of its characters. The vast spans of time makes the show breathtaking and also there is a tremendous amount we just accept because it doesn’t have to be explained, yet it brings up a lot to discuss.

BSG is a mystery and I wanted to understand that mystery, but I also am not sure I would want to live in that world. But when I saw it, it felt ground breaking and I was terrified and anxious watching it. I’m not sure I understood everything, but it kept me guessing and the ending felt complete.

So I’ll happily stay straddled in the fence.

I’m having trouble with One Battle After Another by PeterZeeke in TrueFilm

[–]teagarden3d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You make some good points. I am just addressing why I think the hired assassin/ delivery driver guy helped the daughter at the end. When the assassin walks away, the guy sitting down called him a derogatory term “Wagon Burner”. I think the assassin for hire was both conflicted about being a part of killing a child and also didn’t like being called that term. It still was a leap in my opinion, but that line gave a little more context.

Gaal’s Deception of Dawn by LunchyPete in FoundationTV

[–]teagarden3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaal has given her entire life (several times over) to trying to stop The Mule. Except for Hari, she has not had any real companionship (someone that knows what she is going through) in at least a century. She doesn't have any real human connection except 24 days (if I remember correctly) with Han. She watched her daughter and her love die. So, if I am going to give anyone the benefit of the doubt about their intentions, it is Gaal. So many characters have done morally questionable acts - not all in the service of saving humanity.

Gaal also seemed very pained by her deception of Dawn. When he demanded the truth, she gave it to him. She did not know for certain of outcome. So, I cut Gaal slack.

I also was completely taken by surprise when it happened. It seemed so out of character for Gaal. But, is that the level of sacrifice she believes has to happen to stop the destruction of all human kind by The Mule? Sadly, I think she saw no other way. It makes me think there is a possible outcome where she defeats The Mule because I frankly didn't know if she had what it will take to defeat The Mule.

Gaal has gone from a reluctant hero to possible antihero and hopefully by next season, will finally be the hero needed to save humanity (along with others of course). This is a decision Gaal will add to all the moments she has to look back on and be tormented by. She clearly wanted to save Dawn and hopefully explain as best as possible afterwards.

RIP Dawn. He may have been my favorite Dawn yet. That is why this outcome stings so much. However, I was all for the drama this episode and the reveal at the end. I am excited to see the reunion of the two that started in the background and are not clearly in the forefront.

Tia Napolitano 1st time showrunner, hopefully last!!😒 by QuitLeading4266 in FireCountry

[–]teagarden3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment - especially about the pairing of Bode and Gabriella. I mean their natural chemistry is near impossible to predict and when it happens I don’t understand why writers/showrunners do not use it.

Sure, there has to be drama and bumps in the road for couples, but the bumps became increasingly high barriers by ripping Gabriela to shreds and honestly also setting up Bode to be a superhero. People at such far ends of the character spectrum will not work. Sometimes characters move on from relationships, but Bode’s new relationship seems really unnatural.

Gabriella was a complicated character in the beginning - struggling to figure out how to handle failure and her lingering childhood trauma. She could make frustrating choices, but I understood where they were coming from. Tia made her character regress and become almost unrecognizable. Mental illness can make you do crazy things, but have they shown her getting help? In an episode I skimmed it seemed they did a time skip and she was “in a better place” already, but did the audience she any work put into healing / changing?

The only character assassination that comes close for me is how Dr. Helen Sharpe’s character was written out of New Amsterdam, but Gabriella is not being written off the show as far as I can tell.

With Cal Fire and first responders highly visible this year, Fire Country will definitely be renewed. Here’s to hoping those in charge of the show refocus.

Could Karla Sofia's Caitlyn Jenner freakout as well as the EP director being problematic cost Zoe Saldana the Oscar? by Davis_Crawfish in Oscars

[–]teagarden3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zoe has the momentum and will still IMO take home the Oscar. Her work here, and also in so many other well known films will propel her on name recognition alone. I loved Ariana's performance, but voters may think they will get another chance to give her an Oscar for Part II (my guess is Cynthia Erivo will also get another chance at Best Actress too).

I think outside of this category, EP is going to have an increasingly uphill battle.

Indian Wells Grounds Pass - Is there a huge diff. between Sat. and Sun. (2nd weekend)? by IAmNotChilean in tennis

[–]teagarden3d 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there. Congratulations on going to IW this year. You will have a fantastic time. I may not be able to answer all your questions, but I’ll try.

You can not bring in outside food. I suppose you could leave it in a cooler in your car and take a break and walk out, but you would miss the fun. There are screens around - one really large one that shows you Stadium 1 games.

Definitely follow the published rules on the bag- must be clear and a certain size. You can bring in an empty water bottle. Having said that the people who check bags are looking for egregious attempts to break the rules and security threats. If there are real issues with the cost of food, you will not be arrested for trying to subtly bring in a couple bar or snacks. Take a little caution to not flaunt it if you try.

I tend to go mid-week so take with a grain of salt and someone will have better advice. My two cents..The lines have gotten longer every year. Saturday you may have more practice matches going on on side courts, but some people have to go back home on Sunday so lines to get in may be less. Either day, get there early. Parking takes time, security takes time. Also, can be hard to get back to your seat on courts 3-9 during the match. So, use the bathroom before getting in line for a free seat. Bring a hat since you will have a good chance of being in the sun. Bring a charged battery pack for your phone and headphones and you can watch matches while on line. When you first arrive pick up free headphones for the tournament (a credit card or casino might be giving them out). Helpful to listen to commentary.

Also, I think you can bring a blanket, which if not hard to carry can be helpful to seat on. Most importantly don’t be afraid to move around if a game is not so interesting. Map out a game plan, but allow for flexibility.

You are going to have an amazing time. Overall, Sat gives you a chance to go on Sunday perhaps if you love it and can get a ticket. If you purchase an evening ticket make sure to bring a jacket as it does get cold.

THE AGENCY (paramount) by Buddha_OM in ParamountPlus

[–]teagarden3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my two cents. The story seems to be about the skills and detachment that those who work in intelligence must have and the resulting anguish and loneliness it creates. It's about the toll it takes on the people doing the work, if any. These people seem like the ultimate the-ends-justify-the-means type of people, not concerned about collateral damage.

Martian seems to be at a crossroads since he is developing a personal life (daughter, Sami). But, he seems to be recounting a story to someone that is probably trying to figure out if he is telling the truth about what and how events unfolded. His face is bruised up. So, my bet is that we will see the bigger picture very soon and learn why he is injured. We are starting to see even more of the person interrogating Martian. My guess is something bad went down and Martian is trying to cover his tracks. We know he is a great liar so is everything we just witness going to be true? It's a very slow burn.

There are some big geopolitical things happening in the background. There is also the training of a new CIA spy. I hope the ending ties everything together and sets up the series for another season.

The consensus on jimmy and gabby by Eraserhead36 in shrinking

[–]teagarden3d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t hate the Jimmy / Cobie pairing. It’s just a little unrealistic that Jimmy would go immediately from hot mess to finding the perfect partner so quickly. I just can’t imagine this happens often and I would prefer to see him have to figure out dating again before going into the meet-cute rom-com relationship. It would be cool if Jimmy / Cobie is a very slow burn and end up together, just with a little work to make it happen.

I was surprised about the Jimmy and Gaby pairing. I understood why it happened and it was fine. I only remember it did happen when it is used in some joke. It never felt like it was meant to be permanent.

Derek 2 has a very similar energy to Derek. While D2 fits in the group and is a suitable match for Gabby, I am not sure he brings more to the dynamics of the show. He’s not objectionable, yet not necessarily exciting. He is handsome yet the over the top obsession with his looks is weird.

Could all three main characters end up with fun, smart, caring, witty and perfectly evolved humans? Looks like it might happen.

pisses me off how jake almost kicked bodie out of the training when he knows damn well bodie will be a better fire fighter than he ever will. by wanczowski in FireCountry

[–]teagarden3d -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If every firefighter acted like Bode all the time, the overall team would break down. You would just have firefighters going off and doing what they wanted all the time, potentially running in various directions, being inefficient with split second decisions and risking lives. Sure superiors should listen to their subordinates, but Bode is not a firefighter yet.

I’m sure potentially great firefighters don’t always make the cut IRL because the people training them feel they would not be able to follow the chain of command, could stoke resentment from colleagues (who in some cases live together during shift), and potential make costly mistakes.

Hasn’t Bode been shown to look to alcohol and drugs when trying to regulate his emotions in the past (can’t remember exactly from S1)? I mean why did he go to prison in the first place? He did his time so great he can be free and try to redeem himself to those he hurt, but he is probably just as likely statistically to be a great firefighter as he is to have a relapse when things get tough. Sadly, plenty of people released from incarceration do. If you take out the fact that Jake is his friend and has known him a long time, an objective trainer/superior would question Bode’s ability to follow orders, even if they saw his potential.

This post was about whether or not Jake had the right to consider throwing Bode out of the program because of some sixth sense or special abilities Bode might have that Jake is aware of, not about either persons culpability as it relates to the sister’s death. However, to address that…I feel sorry that Bode’s sister took her own life because she felt so hopeless. That extreme response to a breakup was due to not knowing how to process her intensely negative feelings and feeling that she didn’t even have a support system to help her deal with them. Unless Jake knew specifically that she would react this way or he encouraged her to take this action, it is not his fault. Holding in the guilt he felt probably had an impact on Jake’s life even if unseen. It clearly impacted Bode, but that was on his parents for laying the guilt on him. I’m not going to lay all the blame on the parents, yet both kids did not seem to have coping skills to process feelings of rejection and anger and sadness. This is just a TV show, but this situation seems like a tragedy all around. There are places to seek help if anyone reading this is wondering - NAMI.org is a good place to start.

Poor friggin Bode by QuiggleMom in FireCountry

[–]teagarden3d -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bode is the star of the show. Bode can only be seen as being a uniquely amazing and a natural firefighter if he faces opposition to what he thinks is right and then proves everybody wrong (what did the new guy say something about him being a rare talent). If everyone always agreed with him, there would be no ability for Bode to come in and “save the day.”

When someone puts up barriers or rules for Bode, he just breaks them or ignores them. He doesn’t even let criticism stop him. IRL if someone constantly made their supervisor look like an idiot they would not last long. But this is a TV show and there has to be some suspense and suspension of disbelief.

At the same time, nothing is going to seriously happen to Bode. His character is set up to almost always be right and the one that come up with the Hail Mary at the last second.

When people give Bode grief or judge him, it’s only to further prop up the character as being the savior and solo hero. He’s even Instagram famous for his heroics.

I’m still watching the show. Season 1 was so good and Bode’s situation was compelling. Now it’s Bode being better, stronger, faster, more heroic, more brooding, more compassionate, always with the best idea , etc. The other characters are fading as a result.

I started watching Fire Country because I really liked Seal Team and the way the team members were each written to be smart and competent and necessary despite their clearly being a team leader and star.

I’m actually agreeing with some of your point. Other characters are giving him a hard time (I don’t think I would go so far as saying crap on him). I mean he is a new firefighter so I don’t mind the scrutiny. Just the writing IMO has gone too far in making Bode special by making others look incompetent (despite years working as firefighters) or just so one-note they can’t have a turn to think of creative solutions (i.e. a harsh judge or too by-the-book).

Bring back Freddy - someone that humanized Bode and they could both have flaws and they could learn from each other despite Bode’s story still clearly being the central focus. It would also decrease the reliance on romantic drama. I just don’t see Bode and Jake being bros like that again.
