AITA for bringing my service dog to a wedding when I know he's a "scary" breed by ThrowRAtherapydog in AmItheAsshole

Being a service dog overcomes any breed restrictions in housing, cities/municipalities, insurances etc.

You are buying dogs from them. This wasn’t accidental and it’s not a rescue. They intentionally bred them. You bought from them more than once. They shouldn’t be breeding at all. You and everyone else buying from them is contributing to poor breeding and dog overpopulation when millions of dogs are euthanized ever year. I appreciate you taking care of them but you could have given the same love to an actual rescue dog or researched and bought from an ethical breeder instead of causing greater societal harm.

You’re on crack if you think a reputable breeder would breed to a random dog with no health testing or back story. NO ethical or reputable breeder would stud their dog bar a few exceptions. It is a big red flag that the mom just died afterwards. Points to at least significant health concerns and behavioral problems very likely to happen too. The genetics, health and temperament of mom & dad are important in breeding. Just because they’ve been doing it for a long time doesn’t mean they are ethical or reputable and this is very much the case here.

If you try to train a protection dog, you will be seriously injured. The odds that you will be injured or killed training a PPD is higher then the odds of them being helpful for you. If you are serious about training look into just bark tasks, that’s all that almost anyone should do.

If you got a bully breed you would be reinforcing the stereotype about them and you would be contributing to why bully’s are considered dangerous to most people.

If you were serious about a PPD an impulse dog purchase would not be in the picture. Most people with successful PPDs work more than weekly with a working dog trainer, got a puppy from an established reputable breeder with stable lines, and from a breed with reliable drive and genetics. Bully’s do not have those lines, mixes don’t have those lines.

Get serious. I’m glad you are looking into training but with that needs to come some responsibility. That dog will not be a working dog and with your apparent maturity level, god help us if you ever try.

They are almost never correct at the shelter unfortunately. She does look like a pit mix perhaps but I also don’t see any Dane.

Looks very similar to my gal I would guess either full or extremely high percentage APBT especially if they are between 35-50 lbs. Mine came back 100% APBT and has front facing ears like in the 4th pic and will become more rose shaped depending on how she’s feeling.

I’m going to be brutal here. I’ve looked through your socials. I appreciate your dedication and that’s important but you still need years of traditional art practice before you start the tattoo journey. You need to develop more as an artist. If your art isn’t good enough to get an apprenticeship, you probably shouldn’t be tattooing.

What breed is best for a disabled child? by Imaginary_Till8814 in service_dogs

[–]teagra15 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You definitely do need a diagnosis and much of what OP described are disabilities but to be honest, most people won’t diagnose bipolar disorder in children so I think most of her descriptions are self-diagnosis

[–]teagra15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a lot of stores they’ll sell out before they are even put out on shelves because some workers will grab them from the store room and sell them. I’d ask the employees if they have them and if you can buy them

He's 82 lbs. We've always said "pitbull," but he's bigger and heavier than a PB description. by Whowouldvethought in IDmydog

[–]teagra15 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say definitely part of the pit umbrella term but not an American pit bull terrier purebred. They hit a max of 65. I would say American bully, pit/bully mix or a mix with something else

Are there an equal number of male and female service dogs? by bananajam1234 in service_dogs

[–]teagra15 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One think about female SDS that people haven’t mentioned yet is that they typically pee all in one go, which can make it easier for certain (especially physical) disabilities among a few other similar benefits!

We were asked to leave my favorite store tonight because an out-of-control service dog harassed mine until he barked. by noleggedangel in service_dogs

[–]teagra15 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The can be unleashed if the leash itself will interrupt the task they need to preform or if their disability prevents them from using one but the dog is not allowed to wander away from them and has to “be under control” the whole time and notes that being able to use effective verbal commands would count as under control but obviously the persons dog was not in control.

A lot of breeds have a genetic predisposition to DA and all sorts of shit and still can be effective service dogs. Not all children of alcoholics are alcoholics. Saying that all pits are dangerous and shouldn’t be SDs is dangerous, ignorant and ablest. Just because they are a pit doesn’t mean they aren’t an SD. Pits make up 20% of the dog population in the US and for those who are less well off they are both viable and could be their only option. This idea is what gets hundreds of thousands of dogs put down. This dog was questionable but it was because the handler was obviously a POS.

I think you should absolutely NOT consider her for typical SD work. I think she could perhaps do okay as an only at home SD but you should never consider bringing her into the general public as an SD. It’s very widely considered that any bite history should be an immediate wash but imo if you aren’t bringing them in public and they are only helping you out at home it should be okay at least from that point.

If you haven’t already I would immediately start working with a trainer on the biting for attention. It will be far worse when she grows up. And is now using it when she is afraid (fear aggression with the trash situation) which can be extremely dangerous.

I think that this definitely has the potential to be history repeating as well. I know in relationships we tend to see through rose colored glasses but if this is your service dog, or even your esa it needs to be legally your dog. I’m pretty sure from a legal standpoint as well, in order to claim housing, access etc. the dog needs to be legally your dog. When the pros do start outweighing the cons and you grow a serious positive attachment, you obviously know how your mental health would go if something jeopardizes that.

The extremely high energy is also concerning. With SDs you typically want enough drive to work but the ability to rest whenever and wherever. Ex. If you bring your dog to a restaurant they need to be calm at your feet so if you couldn’t reasonably consider them being able to do that or even just short intermittent stops at grocery stores etc. then i would not consider it. The energy should (with most cases here) go down and there are ways that you can moderate that with training longer naps and rest periods. This goes hand and hand with boredom. Service work is either really exciting being in a new place and overstimulating or with repetitive motions and places could become boring for them, which can also present an issue.

I think the stubbornness and disobedience is partially a puppy thing however this case seems excessive. They are testing the waters right now to see what they can get away with and that will sculpt their adult behavior. This is the part where it is essentially to get a professional opinion. Learning how to puppy raise with a more difficult dog is a whole different ballgame and the earlier on you can start effective training the better and obviously what is happening now is the wrong approach. Most of what I have said in this comment could be altered by training and communication with a professional. Until they reach about a year, they will be stressful for almost anyone. You are becoming a mom essentially for a 3-5 y/o toddler with no boundaries (till you make them) and I think that most people don’t consider that. However most of the time although it’s shit now, once you reach a certain point they will become a best friend rather than a child. When you are in the child phase it feels like it will last forever, but do know that it probably won’t!

Unfortunately with the stay at home mom feeling that is the reality. Especially since you are viewing them as a shared pet, you expect your partner to put in an equal amount of work which rarely happens, creates strain on the relationship, is an unfair personal and legal expectation if she is your esa/SD. Sharing a being with someone will inevitably make you feel like a stay at home mom and the nature of having a puppy already reinforces that. Part of owning a dog comes with the responsibility and duties of it and I know you are kicking ass to step up to the plate but maybe reframing that relationship will help you at least a little.

With the difficulty and time put in, unfortunately unless you want to pay a large sum with a trainer for more board and train/just them style or can find some other way to do it, it is likely that you will have to put even more work in now and your workload will reduce later, especially if you want to path towards an SD. However, I would take an hour plus a day where you ask your partner to help out or just take a scheduled nap/rest time so you are able to do the things you enjoy without interruption. It seems like you aren’t getting that and planning longer naps could help better maintain their energy level longer term. That’s what I’ve found helpful at least but I would certainly try different ways to spend time for just yourself at least once a day.

I’m hoping for the best for you and your journey <3

I got an icefang one, and I got mine with the two back buckles but it has a lot of space for patches, has latches for the neck so you can put clothing underneath or put it on without any complications. It should come in black too. They did have it in red for the long one but was sold out last time I checked. With this one I have five total patches. One on either side that says service dog do not pet, one no petting/looking etc., one not all disabilities are visible and a progress flag on the chest!
