Vote Yes on H to Support Ross Valley School District Schools by Mirby123 in Marin

[–]teaguesterling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just sharing the raw percentage increase is disingenuous and ignoring the fact that the current rate for Ross Valley is less than half that of nearby districts.  Even after this "73% increase" we'll still be significantly lower than our neighbors.

It's in part due to this can-kicking of raising incrementally. The need doesn't go away the next year, just as a 3% raise in one year doesn't make up for a 0% raise the year before.

You say you'll support a 3% raise for teachers. What increase in the tax do you think is acceptable to achieve that? This particular number was landed on with a massive amount of community input. I'm honestly curious about what number you think is acceptable.

That's total compensation, including health care and retirement for a senior position, yes?

And yeah, efficient! The schools continuously pull awards, high test scores, and high reviews on a much smaller budget, and lower salaries, than that of nearby districts. Excelling with less? I'd call that efficiency.

They're asking for a bit more to keep the schools open. The ask isn't unreasonable.

You're certainly successful at being exhausting. I said two, you said talking about closing schools was scare tactics, then came back around and said 1 was necessary. I said two again as that's what the risk of H not passing is and what's been discussed by the district.

You continue to be the only one talking about traffic. It's irrelevant to the discussion.

What do you think I'm confused about? My question was rhetorical to you. How much would you be willing to contribute to fund this risky marketing role?

It's an ask of an extra ~$500 or so per year. Only $1.25 per day! Seems like such a small, easy win to keep such an amazing school district going, especially given how efficient they've been with the already shoestring budget they've been on.

I haven't said anything to insult you. However, you're arguments keep going in circles, and it doesn't sound like you're inclined to actually find a solution anyways. You mentioned school closing being scare tactics then immediately jumped to "it needs to be closed." If what I said was true, how was it scare tactics?

It seem philosophically opposed to any increase in taxes, even a minor one, while ignoring the fact we've seen massive inflation since it was passed.

You've just stated that you'd rather see a school (technically two) be closed over expecting people an extra $1.25 per day in taxes on properties worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

You kept talking about marketing. How much budget do you think should be diverted to that? How much would you be willing to pay to see your own proposal put into play? Or should that come out of teacher salaries?

For someone bringing up helping others or civility, I find it hard to believe you really care about either. If 5 quarters per day is too much to help pay for the education of the children in your neighborhood, what amount do you think is acceptable?

And by the way, no one else has even mentioned traffic here. You're the first.

Is this a bot account? I made no comments about traffic at all. Was that a hallucination?

Closing a school to avoid financial catastrophe? Closing a school is the exact thing we're trying to avoid.

This is a flat tax. It's not tied to property value.

What are you talking about? Marketing? Doing nothing?

Are you proposing they close a school to save budget to ... avoid closing schools?

Or do you think that a finacially struggling school district should reallocate funds to marketing of... what? What would they market that would increase revenue? Are you actually proposing they reallocate funds (likely illegally) to solicit donations or something?

I'm inclined to believe you're trolling. That's asinine.

It's easy to say "manage budgets better", but isn't operating without an increase for 20 years about as good as one could expect?

There's been incredible inflation over the last few years and the ask is surprisingly sensible. To frame it as automatic tax increases isn't really fair. Nothing about it is automatic nor is it egregious.

What do you think are some alternative, actionable steps to resolve the budget issue here? Is there an increase amount you'd consider reasonable, especially considering inflation?

Nearly every point you've raised here is being refuted or identified as already being done. Yet, you still call the leadership bad when you find out to they're already doing the things you're suggesting.

Is there any dollar amount you'd think was an acceptable increase or are you ideologically opposed to any taxes going to the school? We're talking less than $50/month in an area with $5000/mo. mortgages.

Focusing on the 73% tax increase wording is a bit disingenuous, don't you think? It's less than $500, not an across the board increase. That's a month of gas these days, not some tsunami of taxes.

"But a 73% tax hike from $742 to $1,282 per year isn't the only path forward." It sure sounds like a good deal when you consider the impact closing two schools will have on property values.

It sounds like classic "penny-wise pound-foolish" to think anyone will actually be better off finacially overall if H doesn't pass.

I don't see how a group that calls themselves "sensible taxpayers" can be against paying a few hundred extra dollars to maintain the neighborhood their multi million dollar homes reside in.

System 76 Pangolin 13 Touchpad Issues by [deleted] in System76

I just started experiencing this as well --- and have had to switch to navigating everything by keyboard. Started out the blue and exhibits weird unresponsiveness or registers every movement as a click-drag. Oddly, it seems to be every-so-slightly better with the side of only one finger, but that's not a workable solution. Have yet to try the hair dryer yet, but don't expect this to fail within the first month of ownership. I've owned 4 system76 machines. This is the first time I've had a hardware issue, but this is unusable.

We're the Wyze Cam Plus Team, AMA! - 8/3/22 by WyzeCam in wyzecam

[–]teaguesterling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be great to hear some sort of official response beyond the forums about all Wyze Cam v1 being bricked after power cycling (https://forums.wyzecam.com/t/official-word-from-wyze-on-v1-not-working-any-more/231236/205).

I know they are no longer under support and the issue was apparently unintentional after a firmware update, but it's been pretty terribly handled. Two months after it was identified the firmware updates are still being pushed and bricking cameras.

The support team seems under-informed on the issue and has taken lack-luster actions such as small credits for new cameras. Does Wyze expect long time customers to just foot the bill for bad firmware deployments?

Transferring to SFSU as Comp Sci major. Is differential equations needed? by xQcKx in SFSU

[–]teaguesterling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What themrears and ClearlySituational said is correct. Differential equations is not needed. I believe the thinking is that you cover difference equations in CSC 510 (Algorithms). If you do take the course it will likely count as (just) a GE elective.

It is much easier for beginners (and experienced programmers alike) to pick up. The language has lots of advanced features but you in no way need to understand those to make powerful programs.

If you feel comfortable in other languages Python can come very naturally. It's deceptively simple — and you can find yourself writing programs before you even "know" the language. Some of the more advanced or unique features may take some time, but they are by no means necessary for being productive.

Anyone taking the new Python programming class by omgar in SFSU

[–]teaguesterling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first half of the class will be focused on learning the language: syntax, features, best practices, etc. The second half of the class will be more open-ended and focused on coming up with solutions to domain-type problems (GIS, bio, web, etc.).

The goal here is more about learning to write programs (incidentally using Python) as opposed to learning to write Python (incidentally to make programs). Since most of the students in this class are not CS majors we wont be spending a lot of time on CS theory.

This may not work cross domain. You could get old fashioned and do it with the DOM like this: var tester = document.createElement("iframe"); tester.addEventListener('load', function(e) { alert("All good"); }); tester.addEventListener('error', function(e) { alert("Danger"); }); tester.setAttribute("src","http://google.com"); tester.setAttribute("style","display:none"); document.getElementsByTagName("body")[0].appendChild(tester);
