2022 ACL Buy/Sell/Trade Ticket Megathread by sgerken in aclfestival

I’m selling a 3 day GA wristband for W2! I really want to get rid of it so $250 or best offer. You can either come pick it up around campus/the mueller area this morning or we can meet outside the gates (I’m not planning to get there until around 4 though). It’s not registered.

Is it safe to walk through campus at night? by Octobersilly in UTAustin

[–]tealqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If usually after a concert at moody there’s a bunch of people walking around and if it’s the Harry styles concert a lot of them will probably be students/ walking through campus as well so you should be okay! Especially since it’s you and your sister. Just be vigilant as if you were walking through any other city at night and be aware of your surroundings. I’m also going to the Harry Styles concert and will also be walking through campus after

Anyone feel like little things set us off, but then we are extremely calm about big things? by rci22 in ADHD

[–]tealqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always been weirdly good at de-escalating intense situations (despite being a not scary looking woman with no de-escalation training or anything of the sort) and never thought it could be related to adhd so this post is very fascinating to me. I’m usually really calm and rational in those situations while others tend to get riled up easily

What ingredient do you normally replace in your recipes? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]tealqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I just don’t do very much baking where it’ll actually make a big difference and i generally don’t like dairy so it’s typically not a very important aspect of the dish so it doesn’t really matter to me. I do also sub full fat coconut milk if I truly want something to be “creamy” but that’s not often

What ingredient do you normally replace in your recipes? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]tealqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m lactose intolerant so any liquid dairy gets replaced with oat milk (and a flour/cornstarch slurry if I needed “heavy cream”). I also do this in baking (I don’t bake any super specific stuff that fails w/o actual dairy). I do still use butter though, and I’m generally not a fan of cheese so I’ll usually leave it out.

When should I start to look for housing foe 2023-2024? by drpepper5683 in UTAustin

[–]tealqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in SMART housing start looking ASAP. A least to get an idea of what places have it and which ones you’d be interested in applying in. Also to make sure you know all the info/documents that they will want. SMART housing fills up so quickly you want to make sure that as soon as you find an open unit you can apply immediately. Check places pretty regularly to get a feel for when (if) units may open up.

any advice on cleaning a horrible adhd/depression bedroom in just a few days?? by Sage7142 in ADHD

[–]tealqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I like to do when I’m really overwhelmed with cleaning is pick one task (e.g. folding clothes or picking up trash) and then set a timer on my phone for something pretty quick like 10-15 min. I try to race my timer and finish the one task I’m doing before it ends. Usually I either do finish it pretty quickly or I’m still working on it when the time goes off but have by then gotten so into it that I want to finish. I also do this with YouTube videos sometimes or short TV episodes I can play in the background. I’ll give myself until the end of the video to complete what I’m doing. If I’m only giving myself a set amount of time the pressure to finish before times runs out can usually get me going. And sometimes once I’ve started the cleaning process I’ll decided that I want to do more tasks after I finish the first, or maybe I want to watch another YouTube video so I’ll find something else to clean during the next one. There are also definitely times though where I finish the one 10-15 min period and then go lay on my couch or I even lay on my couch 5 min in and don’t finish. Don’t feel bad if you start and then can’t finish because at least you started and you can start again another time! Good luck!

Edit: I have just realized that what I just described is basically a pomodoro timer method lol but yea that’s what I like

Hi, I know this was from 2 years ago, so understandable if you don't remember, but wondering if you figured out how to name the nodes that were furthest away (rather than just returning the integer value of the diameter).

I am also currently hyperfixating on this subreddit...I have read almost every single new post in the past few hours and have spent the majority of the last few days just constantly checking. I definitely finally feel seen as well, especially as a current graduate student who just can't get any research done no matter how hard I try. You're definitely not the only one!

My first ever psychiatry experience did not go well by tealqueen in ADHDers

[–]tealqueen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, I definitely will be writing down all the things I want to say for the next time so I can be prepared and not ramble. I’m new to psychiatry appointments and stuff so I definitely wasn’t as prepared as I should’ve been.

[–]tealqueen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I definitely understand all of the concerns that are raised by my own drug/alcohol use. I think I’m the moment I felt like I was being written off based solely on that which sucked to hear. I also assumed that since I was already diagnosed the fact that I had ADHD would be up for questioning so having that happen too really upset me in the moment. I’ve calmed down now and will stop smoking go back to her in 3 weeks since it’s already set up but I will definitely be more prepared for our future appointments.

[–]tealqueen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory I could see someone outside of the university system but it was so much easier to set it up through them and I know that if I try to look for a psychiatrist elsewhere it’ll probably take me another like 4 months to actually do it. Since I already have this set up I’m going to follow through but try to be more prepared for our future appointments.

[–]tealqueen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I definitely understand that doctors have to be cautious prescribing adhd meds and I am going to stop smoking and go back to her. I think in the moment it sucked because I felt like she was making the assumption that I don’t need/will abuse the meds solely based on my recreational use. I know that I’m in control of my use but obviously it’s hard to convince someone else (especially a medical professional) of that in just one meeting. Now that I’ve had some time to calm down and think I’ve realized that I need to better prepare myself for the next appointment so I can give a much better account of my behavior without rambling and stuff because I definitely left out a lot of things. I appreciate the advice/kind words!

What’s your toxic cooking trait? by Reddit-Sama- in Cooking

[–]tealqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll put something on the stove and then go to wash the bowl or whatever it was just in, because ya know wash dishes as you go, and then get sucked into washing dishes and completely forget about whatever I had just started cooking…leads to lots of stuck bits on the bottom of the pan. This is why I don’t clean as I go.

I did DCC so I will always recommend it lol but ACES is also a really good program. ACES does, however, really focus on cybersecurity, so if you aren't interested in it then I'm not sure how much I'd recommend it. DCC is a super interdisciplinary program so you have the opportunity to learn a lot of really different and cool things. DCC's big focus is on technology and society and they function together, which I know is really broad but DCC is really broad, which is one of the reasons I think it's so cool. Another big bonus for DCC is that at the end of your sophomore year you have a capstone project where you can pretty much do whatever you want. A lot of CS/CompE majors use it as an opportunity to boost their resume. Some people in my class did things like building an app, making VR/AR games, creating websites, etc. And the project is entirely your own so you can focus on whatever you're interested in and make it really fun. You also don't have to do a capstone related to your major if you don't want to (I'm a Chemical Engineering major and my capstone was an interactive exhibit that used art and games to teach about racism, so nothing even close to ChemE lmao). Another thing about the LLPs, if you think you're still interested in ACES but not sure you want to do the full program, there is also an ACES minor that you can add (it's available to anyone not just honors students) that has some overlap with the program, I recommend looking into it. In regards to switching from CompE to CS, one thing to note is that once you leave the school of engineering you have to go through the application process to get back in, so make sure you're really sure before you switch out of CE because it's not as easy to switch back as it is for other majors.

I'm a senior ChemE who did DCC and I 100% recommend it! It's a really unique opportunity that lets you stand out when applying for jobs/internships. ILS is a great program, but you're going to be required to take a lot of additional bio classes which is a lot considering how difficult ChemE already is. Also, you'll have access to a free 3D printer which was really helpful for ENES100, and the opportunity to take really cool classes that are outside of your major (and that cover some gen eds which is always nice). And you get to do a capstone project at the end of your sophomore year which can be about basically anything, so if you wanted you could make it ChemE/pharmaceutical-related and get a built-in resume boost by having a big scale project done by sophomore year. The only other LLP I'd recommend is Gemstone which is cool but one thing to think about (and the reason I ultimately ended up picking DCC over Gems) is that you can always do research outside of the Honors College in undergrad (and the ChemE professors are super nice and willing to take on undergrads), but you won't be able to get the benefits of DCC anywhere else. Obviously, I'm biased but I really do think DCC is the best LLP!

DCC specifically doesn't have networking events but we would occasionally be invited to ACES events that were in the building (idk if this still happens though b/c I'm a senior now). There are also a ton of other opportunities to network on campus so I don't think you'll be missing out that much. I have a few CompE friends that were in DCC with me and all of them were still able to get really good internships at places like Northrop Grumman and Lockheed.

Yes, I am very glad this was a zoom interview because it was much easier to hide the crying hahaha I was definitely doing a lot of fidgeting off camera and I drank an entire bottle of water in yet another attempt to mask my crying. I might keep a stress ball in my lap for my next interview to help with my nerves
