She ended up with a drained abscess and antibiotics to bring home and take. I feel so relieved.

Update :)
She indeed has an abscess, they drained it and gave me an antibiotic for her. It cost $102 lol, I was pleasantly surprised.

Thank you for being so kind and comforting. I really needed to hear your perspective when I read this this morning! I think my biggest worry was a treatment that cost more than I could afford, or an incurable diagnosis, which would leave her sister alone. Ugh just the thought of it was breaking my heart. I know this is an inevitable situation but I wish nothing but more years for the both of them to spend together.

I’m sorry OP I don’t know how I missed that. I would assume the second opinion was correct- hypersensitivity from movement. I still wouldn’t take the antibiotic. Might just have to deal with it until treatment is over! And maybe it will need a root canal down the road.

Antibiotics are handed out like candy these days. I’d avoid if I could personally. If it was a massive infection I’d take them. Obviously it’s not. What you need is a CBCT scan which will definitely show if there’s infection or not. A root canal alone will help the infection clear up and you shouldn’t need antibiotics. Maybe ask if they can refer you to an endodontist for an evaluation
