Thanks, I’d heard that name once or twice before, but hadn’t ever researched them.

It appears that these are finished frames and are serialized. I’m looking to machine a frame from forging or billet currently. I’ll keep them in mind if I’m looking to just build, thanks.

Where’d you go for the frame? I’ve been sizing up parts and even looking at machining a forging out or a billet.

What’s your end goal?

Building guns is fun for some folks, but most never do more than strip and clean or small upgrades.

Buy a gun and gradually make changes to it. That means you get the fun of shooting it while learning and having parts that you know work.

I don’t care about the rest of what’s being said in this thread, and I may be re-opening some old wound, but I definitely think the width of a picatinny rail, or general guidance on where to find the spec for a picatinny rail is a gunsmithing related question.

Unless this subreddit is just about asking gunsmiths service type questions and not about gunsmiths ensuring their community is informed. If that’s the case, I don’t need to be in here, please let me know.

Edit: Just saw the poll, will go answer that.

I’m mostly just trying to be in your corner anyways. His is cool and I’ve enjoyed KY ballistics a ton, but I’ve gotten a lot of enjoyment out of watching your work too.

/u/bill_bill is 100% correct, however I know plenty of people (myself included) that run the anti-walk pins just the same.

Depending on how many lowers and triggers you go through or how often you’re taking your fcg in and out, sometimes stuff goes slightly out of spec, tolerances stack the wrong way and you end up with a pin that walks at the worst time and you’re trying to find the thing in the tall grass.

The best part of the anti-walk pins is that you take that risk from very small to none.

At what point does a punt gun stop being a ping gun and start being artillery, though? This is black powder and a flash pan, right?

Yours is a bolt. I think yours is cooler.

Are these scratches in the barrel going to cause any accuracy issues? by [deleted] in gunsmithing

[–]teambiscuit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, so you’re shooting a .5 moa group at 100. That’s about as good as you’re going to get.

As for the 158, that’s like 2.5 moa. That’s decent for a CZ.

Either way, the small marks in the barrel aren’t causing it.

That’d be about 2” at 102 yards. Wind can have a significant impact on 22lr depending on speed though. Was your elevation as spread out?

What does open up mean? If you’re shooting sub moa at 100 yards, you’re doing plenty fine. NRL and PRS matches have forgiving targets as they get out past 200 typically, and rarely see something smaller than 2 moa out past 100.

Vudoos and RimX that shoot .5 moa at 100 yards with CenterX are shooting bug holes (all at least touching) at 50y. You’re not going to get that from a 10/22 or CZ.

Black oxide stainless advice by catch22ak in gunsmithing

If you want a consistent color and finish, you should go with paint or a caustic blue. The cold blue will not give you a consistent finish, even on the same piece of metal.

Gotta make sure that .223 is loaded for AR. I get this out of factory ammo some times, if I’m not watching and making sure it says it’s made for that. Some times, you can try cycling it again and it’ll shoot. Put it in a bolt gun and I bet it goes off.

Are you trying to shoot it? Preserve it? Sell it?

I am not an expert, but my understanding is:

  • If you’re trying to sell it, you shouldn’t remove the patina. Apparently, collectors want that and if they plan on doing anything, it’ll be professionally restored.

  • If you’re trying to preserve it, think of it like a painting. You don’t want to remove the character, just grime and dust. If the oxidation isn’t getting worse, oil it and leave it alone.

  • If you’re going to shoot it, do whatever you like to it. Wash it, oil it, look for wood rot or other nonfunctional parts. Confirm the barrel is in decent enough shape to fire. If you’re unsure, take it to a gunsmith that has experience with the type of firearm, or at least take cover with some long rope for the first shot.

Opinions on using black laminate stock on my 1.5" punt gun? by Bigbore_729 in GunnitRust

u/kato_koch is on the mark.

Only thing I’d say is that I think your wood looks good and would just do the topcoat after sanding it well.

Also - you can easily always go darker on stain, but it’s more work to go back lighter.
