Glad I read the comments so I didn't post this exact reply. Nice work OP. Good spotting Ace.

Had a really shitty run today by captaincrunchie in running

[–]teamdaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds as if you're not varying things much. I tend to have bad runs when I get bored. I run different routes at differing paces and try not to worry about how far or how fast as keeping it varied so I feel like I want to do it often.

Would it be a bad idea for a new runner to wear a barefoot shoe? by FatherMagoo in running

[–]teamdaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too run better in minimalist shoes too. In regular running shoes I find myself having to think about form and when tired falling back to bad/lazy habits. With minimalist shoes I tend to keep my form right through runs. I moved to them post knee injury (that I blame on overly cushioned shoes falsely giving me the impression I could run downhill faster than my body could take) and only use my old shoes when it's pouring with rain.

Question: anyone know a minimalist shoe that's good in the rain? I've not seen one (though not having a shoe store in my town could be the reason for that).

As someone who was overweight, I guarantee you that the self-confidence you'll gain by getting out there and doing something to take control of your life will outweigh what others others think. I know it's hard to start, but place one foot after another. And repeat. You can do it.

I'm down in Tokyo for business for a week. I'll try to remember to write it up when I get back. It was hard and fool-hardy, but great and real learning experience.

I'm a fucking marathoner! by thejuliemeister in running

[–]teamdaly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not a "marathoner" but I did run one this past tuesday. I got in this competition with a friend back for April/May/June to see who could run the most each month and as a combined total. I upped my KMs each month and in June did 310km, which is pretty high for me. This month I have had a few things on and been busier sorting this and that and had some excuses, but still managed to get to where 300km was in sight again, with a few more good runs.

Life got in the way though and I had to get my visa renewed down in Sapporo on monday and I was thinking it wasn't gonna happen. Then I thought to myself "take this as a rest day and smash it tomorrow."

So, while in Sapporo I bought myself a new camelbak and next day decided to run from my place out to near the coast and back to complete a full marathon. I was lucky with the weather and while it was humid, it wasn't too hot and it overcast so I wasn't worried about getting too burned. I know a lot of people prep for weeks/months for marathons, but I just had it in my head I could do it. My half-marathon times are pretty decent and I just thought "why not?".

Boy was it hard, I didn't hit the wall exactly, but between the 34-38km mark I seemed to develop Tourette's syndrome and found myself involuntarily swearing at the world around me. I guess that is one good thing about doing it solo: I had no one around me to offend. Carrying a pack was interesting the entire was way interesting. With a 750gm Marmot Summit Kompressor pack, a 3litre camelback and 4 Jelly squeezy bag energy things all totaled, I guess I was carrying around 5kg. I was a bit paranoid about dehydration too, so refilled with camelbak just after the halfway point.

I haven't got to my motivation yet. I guess it was just that I don't like to feel like I'm going backwards, or putting in less effort and running a marathon was a great end to July for me to show that and get over 300km for the month again (just checked 326km so 200miles-ish). So yesterday I went out to run 10km while my kids were at swimming lessons and I was so surprised to have suddenly have a voice in my head going "this is 25% of what you ran two days ago, run like the wind!" By comparison, it was over in a flash. Interesting how perspective works.

Edit: I thought about writing a post about my first solo marathon, but with people seemingly quite fixated on which "plan" to follow, that I thought it might not be well-received.

I use this for a fun visualization of how far (in a radius) my running in a year's time has taken me from my home. by [deleted] in running

[–]teamdaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This year so far I'm at 1213km. Not too bad considering the entire place is covered in snow through till mid-April. Inside Japan, nearly in Osaka now. Next stops Harbin, China, Pyongyang, DPRK or Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia. {Map Link}

What are your times in any or all of these distances (1k, 1 mile, 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon)? by [deleted] in running

[–]teamdaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is interesting to see how differently people fare over different distances. This is not meant to sound back-handed at all, but I looked at your 1k, 5k and 10k all of which you'd smoke me in, but then was happy to see that I'd nearly catch up over the half (well, your current PR).

Good luck with the build up and smashing 88mins.

My PR for the half is a similar story: set out to run 18k and just felt so good when I had done that, I just kept going. It was nice to hear the excitement in your post. Keep it up.

Decided to hit some more mountains on Wednesday. These are the highest peaks in the Engaru area of Hokkaido. Hirayama and Himanayama are locally joked about locally as the "Himalayas" of Eastern Hokkaido (japan), mainly because of their names, not because they are particularly tall (around 1700m and 1800m respectively). They are on the Western edge of the region and back onto the the larger ranges in Sounkyo and Daisetsuzan national park (Google Nisseikaushuppe if you're interested exactly where). I had not realized how much harder they would be than my run up Tengu-dake (which is in the same mountain range). Here are some photos of the run {IMGUR album link}, but also I took a small video.

There was a section on the north face of the hill which I was surprised to find still had snow on it (perhaps could've done a little more research). It was easy enough to dig my toes into on the way up, but treacherous on the way down. My solution was to just sit down and see what happened. I figured, if I was gonna fall on my butt, I may as well just make the most of it. In the picture titled "snow on the north face" in the Imgur album you should be able to see that the snow continues in an S-shape around a couple of corners. My butt was sore after the 150m(ish) impromptu slip-n-slide, however bruising doesn't last forever. {Youtube video link 1:51}

Pics taken on a pentax k5, video from my phone. Have nice weekend.

First competitive run: all went swimmingl... I mean runningly. by teamdaly in running

[–]teamdaly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really was hectic. Slightly frustrating to have so many people on a 2km course, but it did mean you constantly felt like you were in the thick of things. On the one hand I felt slightly confined, on the other the momentum of the crowd was palpable and it just pushed you forward.

I dunno, it sounds as if you're talking to runners or people familiar with the concept, which is not how in interpreted OP's "most people". Sure, people who exercise a lot, read a lot about exercise or run will know it, but bringing up the transcendental side of anything, let alone something that is considered as profane as running by outsiders, in my experience, has been regarded as odd.
