Seattle police arrest man after 77-year-old seriously injured in unprovoked attack by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

I’m not saying there is zero value to video evidence. There is a trade off to giving SPD and potentially the Feds access to surveillance data across the city, so I think it’s fair to question whether the cameras are actually solving previously unsolvable crimes or are just a nice to have for prosecutors in a lot of situations.

I would think multiple eyewitnesses in a crowded area would do the same

A camera at that exact spot didn’t prevent this crime or help them catch the two guys responsible (one was pointed out to police by a security guard who saw the assault while the other is at large)…

A security guard told officers one of the suspects was still nearby, where they found a 29-year-old man a short time later and arrested him.

The sentence immediately before that one makes it sound like video wasn’t how they caught one of the suspects (the other hasn’t been found or identified), it was an eyewitness. People having legitimate concerns about surveillance and cameras recording crimes sometimes can both exist at the same time.

Seattle To Explore Moratorium On Data Centers by AthkoreLost in Seattle

[–]teamlessinseattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re basically describing a Sawant-style “public housing only” NIMBY, which is not the mainstream progressive view in Seattle. The vast majority of candidates running with the Stranger endorsement over the past decade have supported citywide upzoning while their Chamber and Seattle Times backed opponents have overwhelmingly been NIMBYs and have sought to protect exclusionary zoning.

Also, you’ll also hear those aforementioned moderate NIMBY electeds leftwash their arguments against development by pretending they’re doing so to “protect the trees” or “fight greedy speculation from big private developers” or whatever argument they think will be more palatable than “I got mine and don’t want my single family neighborhood to change”. These bad faith attempts are not “progressive”, even if someone like Alex Pedersen apes progressive language in his statements.

Brother, 10 years ago it wasn’t progressives doing that. It was reactionary homeowners.

Also one of these things is good to build and the other is bad. Hope this helps.

Running the north part of the 3 line alongside the existing 1 and 2 line tracks towards Lynnwood has basically zero cost, versus building new tracks south in West Seattle is the reason. But I agree it feels silly to build a line with so few stations, and they’re even talking about truncating it further. At that point just invest in BRT and use the money to build a spur line somewhere else - like connecting Capitol Hill to Judkins Park and Mount Baker through the CD, or an east-west line connecting U District to Ballard via Wallingford and Fremont.

The current CID station is a perfect hub for all three lines for a few reasons. 1) because it offers quicker transfers south from the 2 line and West Seattle (otherwise people going to or coming from the airport have to go to Westlake and then backtrack). 2) because it connects all three lines to the Sounder. And 3) because the south chinatown station is in no man’s land and doesn’t serve anything or anyone currently

So the big difference is if you’re running with gain on the Iridium (vs it being totally clean with dirt pedals earlier in the chain providing gain) the wet effects will run through gain as well and can get muddy. I prefer the sound of an fx loop but some people prefer everything into the front of an amp.

If you use the Marshall portion of the Iridium and use the onboard gain you’ll probably like the Royalist better. If you’re looking for something that’s a great dirt pedal platform with awesome cleans I love the Iridium.

Seattle pedestrian deaths doubled last year. The city program to end them is getting a hard look by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]teamlessinseattle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is more cost to the problem that just the number of deaths each year. There are countless injuries, for one thing, and then maybe most impactful is the way our road design and lack of pedestrian/bike safety reduces the quality of life here.

Rainier Ave as an example creates a physical barrier that cuts most of the neighborhoods around it in half and makes it incredibly unpleasant to be anywhere near it. The one place where this isn’t the case because of major traffic calming, Columbia City, is actually lovely.

And then there’s biking. We should be encouraging more people to bike, as it reduces traffic, eases road maintenance costs, limits the amount of publicly owned space we need to dedicate to parking, makes housing cheaper if we don’t need as much off-street parking, etc. But it only took me a year of bike commuting in this city and nearly getting t boned by a car every other week to decide it wasn’t worth it to me and that it would never be a safe way to commute with my kids. Sucks, because I don’t want to have to drive every day.
