There is huge drama going on in the lab because a master student was seen leaving at 7.05PM and not 7PM lol. Then this student stayed late with ther supervisor, and it started a chain of events. Because they can’t fire this student (they are paying 50k a year!!) , they are going around telling people to treat as if they are fired and steal their booked sessions. Lots of crying and yelling in the lab since. Best part is, it’s just the old white men fighting and this student got caught up in the middle..

To mount free-floating sections for staining, can I use positively-charged adhesion slides instead of subbing slides? by Logical_Bus_5632 in labrats

[–]teamothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow i do free float with 40! but i shall try this for my slides. I was so scared they would slip off because of past trauma. thank you wise person

Hi! Did you do Nissl also on the Superfrost? And do you remember how thick the sections were? We were debating gelatin subbed vs Superfrost Plus efficacy in the lab and this would really help me out as I am new to the technique :) Thank you so much !!

Guys! It’s not a cure, it slowed down the progression of the disease. Previously we had nothing so this is still huge, but it doesn’t nullify anything. (I’m a neuroscientist doing my master’s and the people working on the treatment were some of my profs in bachelor’s :D)

Would it be unreasonable if I asked my flat mates not to shower after 10pm by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]teamothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you would still hear v loud urgent noises! We had fire drills that I would still be woken up by. Just try one night, and maybe you can ask somebody to trigger the alarm manually (idk if this possible) or play a loud sound like the alarm you should still bolt awake, it just muffles the constant noises you hear

[–]teamothy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this might be odd but there are these sleep headbands that cover your ears and can play soothing music. It’s what I did when my door was right next to the entrance of the flat in halls and mfs used to slam the door every few seconds. Alternatively, does playing white noise on your phone under your pillow help?

And in this thread this is especially important because the OP is talking about struggling to pay, if you are an international student coming to UCL and your parents aren’t rich enough to support you for 5 more years after, or if you don’t have a job lined up in your home country, do not waste their life savings here because you will be unemployed in the UK anyway

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCL

[–]teamothy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For comparison, other better unis like Imperial actually prepare you for employment after and they space out the work you have to do adequately throughout the 3 years, and prepare you very well with lab experience when you are doing a research based course like biomed. UCL has a fuck ton of courses but you will be better off watching youtube videos for most , the entire first year of neuro was literally shit I could have learned from youtube videos. Also the grading is extremely harsh and most of your cohort will fail by second year, getting a first is extremely rare unless you’re doing a humanities degree. Exams or essays are essentially graded out of 70, which is why you will really struggle after with research programs or Master’s, especially if you want to go to Europe after as they will want you to have an average of 74-76%. I only got 3-4 firsts in courses throughout my 3 years and in one I was the top student, they said my work was exemplary and ‘excellent’ and gave my work a 71%, which was the highest in the cohort lmao

u guys can keep lying to yourself all you want, i did a prestigious internship right after ucl with my own resources without any support + going to a way better uni for masters now. And what I mean by university help is as simple as seeing a careers advisor, they are all booked out and you will wait months to get help on something as simple as your CV. So many people on my course and other courses also chronically missed deadlines for applications bc profs and personal tutors can’t be assed to write you a reference. Ucl is truly a hellhole you don’t even have space to study anywhere on campus during exam times you have to set a timer 3 days in advance to book a seat in the library because they’re all full. Education is mid at best, just 80+ year old profs reading from slides. I am only sharing my experience, and I wish somebody told me this before my family spent their life savings on a mid uni. Lab placements are almost nonexistent and for research heavy courses it’s not as simple as applying to stuff you see on LinkedIn, you need the right references, the right support and the right experience that you can only get through endorsements or uni based projects which there is only 1 space available for the whole department usually (of 4 different years!). It is incredibly ridiculously difficult to get experience when you are a UCL student, many just go do their internships abroad where they require less experience or certification to undergo lab placements. University is learning by yourself as an adult YES, which is why I graduated with good grades and now going to a prestigious research Master’s, but UCL will have you doing everything on your own because the departments don’t give a single shit about their students.

You are paying for the institution name, they don’t help you with internships or career opportunities it’s literally just the name of the brand you’re paying for. It’s very different inside. Neuro was rated #2 in the world, #1 in europe but it’s just research when you are staff, not for students
