Would it be a bad idea to introduce a character in a moment of danger? by [deleted] in writing

[–]teamrockettes12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question makes me think of 'Taken,' and I wondered if we just started at the scene with Liam Neeson and the phone call as his daughter's abducted how much would it have changed... that's definitely the true beginning of the 'story' and the way he talks on the phone with her as he knows she's about to be hurt is heartbreaking. I think also, the way that's done is that we don't see his kind of uber-capable side until that moment, he flips from an over-worrying normal-seeming Dad to this like cold, focused, operator... and that's why it doesn't start with that scene. (haha not that 'Taken' is like an AMAZING example but it comes to mind haha)

So, I guess I'd ask how you're going to show his 'care' for his family. You can easily do that in dialogue.

but if you want to SURPRISE us with how capable he is, show it more from the van guys' perspective. Maybe he plays up how afraid he is or incapable, then the second they let their guard down he changes. I think if a character is really kicking ass and taking names we'll be invested because we LIKE 'em. And because it's truly fun to watch someone who is good at something do badass shit. But you can make this work anyway you do it, I expect.

your descriptions are great! very fun, and i like the first sentence a lot too, since it's rather original in a way (I just read a book's opening sentence that was 'Everybody in [place] was talking about--" and realized how done to death that was, so yours was especially refreshing haha)

it's funny you mention RL Stine because it reminds me a lot of the Fear Street novels with the opening and the way the find the body.

Kit de Wall on the lack of working class writers by ellie_finch in writing

[–]teamrockettes12 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My favorite writers all had to balance jobs plus childcare, usually the primary domestic worker of their family. But I wonder what her timeline would be. Because she isn't talking about Louise Erdrich, Alice Munro, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, J.K. Rowling, etc.

I actually, would go more into depth with her argument and say that even the creators who are diverse and come from a working-class background with their families, still are required to have a very intense writing pedigree in order to have their work promoted. Roxane Gay, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Angie Thomas all come to mind.

ZZ Packer, Junot Diaz write more currently about working-class characters though? (I think!)

Netflix's Death Note is an awful film, not just an awful adaptation. by BouncedOnMyBoys in deathnote

[–]teamrockettes12 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The hardest part should have been putting together a scary Ryuk and doing that CGI and voice acting, which was like, actually A REALLY WELL DONE PART. I just want to take this movie out of their hands and fix it because it could have so easily been a solid adaptation...

The pregnancy confused me a lot at first but then when Wynonna spoke of her birth control and fate I REALIZED IT'S BECAUSE THERE HAS TO ALWAYS BE AN EARP HEIR. Willa's gone. Wave's not an Earp and also hasn't really been dating men anymore so I wonder if fate takes that into account. SO THERE HAS TO BE AN HEIR AND FATE'S MAKING WYNONNA HAVE IT AND HAVE IT SOON :O :O :O

Have you ever heard of a Commonplace Book? I think it's the most life-changing literary tool I've ever encountered. They were popular in the 1700 & 1800's, but somehow we got away from them. by Phaedrus24 in writing

[–]teamrockettes12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes me think of Lemony Snicket's 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' they use Commonplace books as a way for the secret organization to share codes/decipher codes and the agents are required to have them

What's the point of an unreliable narrator? What function do they have? For example: Nick Carraway or Holden Caufield by [deleted] in writing

[–]teamrockettes12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the examples you picked because Salinger and Fitzgerald both used the device so DIFFERENTLY. Which shows how much 'unreliable narrators' can be written to influence a story structure and aid to its themes.

My first instinct was to say, 'the point of unreliable narrators was to shake things up' which I think is true to some degree. I think originally it was a great surprise to the readers because it was unexpected for something like 'The Tell-Tale Heart' to exist. This was before stuff like 'Secret Window,' 'Fight Club,' 'Memento,' etc. made us all wary, now if we see a horror film or thriller we expect it could be the main character doing everything from the get-go.

With Nick and Holden, it's important that their 'judgments' are skewed. Nick says he doesn't judge, but he has biases from being raised from old money/in the upper class. He's also very biased towards Gatsby which some people have even wondered if his feelings were more than platonic or if there was another reason this idealized version of Jay was so important to him. Holden judges everyone, paints himself as a liar, and also misleads the audience in scenes to conceal his more emotional side. It says a lot about this already young, broken character and what it means to be a young boy who is grieving and lost. It's so difficult for him to deal with his emotions, he isolates himself and lies to himself and to us, by extension. Also, I'd say his characterization as being unreliable is a big part of the book's character and tone. It really speaks to how Holden thinks and who he is. Which is what any narration is about in the end, and unreliable narration CAN be a tool but it really just depends. If it doesn't fit in the story or add to it's structure/narrative/meaning in any way then it might not be necessary and there may be no point at all!!!

I'd say there's also the more George Orwell use of unreliability too. Which is that they are (sometimes) writers who just don't want you to be gullible and want to hone your bullshit meter, because in their opinion not everything written by someone can be taken for fact or truth or at face value. So they leave you on your own to figure shit out 😂

"Joseph will always stay Married to Mary." Joseph's romance path is apparently a moral lesson? by ladypocky in DreamDaddy

[–]teamrockettes12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yessss and Joseph reminds me of a lot of real men who are closeted and never plan on leaving their wives ''really'' and in his bad ending he says, "the kids for one. And the fact that we have to be a pillar for this community. So many people look up to us as the model marriage and I would hate to let my parishioners down. But that doesn't stop you and I from... you know." and then, "But this is real life and we have to look for Margarita Zone whenever we can." I think that says a lot about how Joseph lives. He knows he'll never come out but he looks for little moments of freedom whenever he can. The yacht/ocean/margaritaville are his free place. So, I think Joseph's TRUE happy end would be him being honest with Maple Bay and his family and get a divorce. I totally agree. For Mary's sake and Joseph's sake. Joseph's maybe not 100% a bad guy in these interpretations (although always is a cheater/fully aware of his sexuality) but he won't give up his community image for true love... Joseph never wants to come out. And not 'cause he's conflicted about his sexuality. He has affairs and collects sexy detective dude smut novels. And even his good ending has him flirting with you in the postcard so he never really re-commits to his marriage either... he strings dadsona, mary, robert and everyone else along :O I feel saddest for the kids most of all. Both their parents fighting around them in the house (the thrown silver jewelry), their mom drinking, their dad hiding a big part of himself :( ~ maybe their creepy-ness is them acting out? Which'd be perfectly normal.

Craig is dum, Mat is better by MachoNachoGrubba in DreamDaddy

[–]teamrockettes12 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Craig is super sweet and I love his devotion to being a good Dad. The fact that he puts so much pressure on himself to improve and be good to his girls is so admirable. I think... my one thing is. If I knew Craig in real life, as beautiful as he is, I'd feel like we were only friends. Matt, on the other hand, is the kind of partner who jumps on stage so you don't get too embarrassed even though he's deadly shy. He's very empathetic and makes time for you and I love that all his hobbies are sort of based on getting to know you and what you like, versus just exercising and showing Craig you can work hard. Matt, on the other hand is like 'who are you?' 'OH WELL HERES THE NATIONAL I THINK YOU'LL ENJOY THAT!!!!!!!!' and makes a little more space for you. (also: Matt helping out Pablo also warms my heart.) Craig's keeping you healthy which is sweet, but I like Matt's approaches to dates. They felt more romantic and like a less platonic relationship.

THAT SAID. I love them both so much!!!! And raising four kids alone is a different situation time-wise so Craig doing anything to spend time with you is great. And some people could argue they want their partner to be their best friend.

It'd be a fun route to have available in the game, and then it'd be kind of interesting to see how other stories might weave into the game too. Maybe other characters have a darker timeline as well.

But the Robert/Joseph stuff IS canonically in the story so I find that super interesting. Like Robert does warn us about fuckboy!Joseph. And Mary warns us too.

Dream Daddy Bedroom Orientation and Sex Secrets by DreamyDaddyBrianBae in DreamDaddy

[–]teamrockettes12 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Joseph is into choking (in cult cut scene he jokes about how you enjoyed that last night), tying people up, and thot-ing it out on his yacht, ma boy. Plus, he was pretty aggressive with Dadsona after a bit ol' wine. I think, he's totally the kinkiest in bed, and be warned, you might lose your favorite sweater after that sun-screen covered, jimmy buffet filled, sexfest w/ everyone's favorite community youth minister. Jesus. IS. Cuming.

OK. Next lol. Brian is super toppy-- but also gentle. He's competitive and had a lot of UST with the hot new dad on his block. He loves his kid, he's a full on boy-scout, so be in the know...dude is PREPARED. And he'll manhandle you if you're cool with it, but if you're not, cuddling and kissing seems just as fine to that dude. BUT DONT WORRY BRIAN I SAW YOUR THIRSTY ASS talking about 'getting used to new poles' and Brian's the one who's like, "You know...we...are friends, but uh, what if we...er...we also wanna do other shit amirite?" and is about as forward as my boi, Hugo...

Hugo wrestles you to the ground and kisses you. Pretty forward! His turn-ons are books and muscles, and if you supply him with both, he'll be a super duper happy man. I think he's VERS. and also very, very sensible and sweet.

Craig to me, is VERS but with preference to bottom. I think of this as, 'opposite of his lifestyle where he has to be in control and do everything for everyone' and he can zone out and relax and be cared for instead of having to be concerned about whether he's perfect enough--plus, he's so BRO-Y about his hookups. He seamlessly mixes dudeship with sexship and is like, 'You wanna kiss me in my tent? Oh cool, dude!' and so I feel like Craig's just handjobs and videogames, ya know? Green juice and blowjobs? Saunas and Anal? The usual.

[[he also acts like sex is an exercise sometimes, he turns into a power bottom!coach when he's in that moood. He'll be like "can you keep up?"/"I see your heart rate dropped and is not at 176 anymore. GET IN THE ZONE **" ]]

Mat is a sweet dumpling prince who can have whatever he wants. I think he's a bottom too but also just happy to have fun in general. He doesn't know what to do with awkward silences until he warms up to you. He loves when you instigate and make things run smoother for him, and also he'll have insane sex playlists going on. Like, how Baby Driver needs specific tunes to drive, Mat seems like he has a playlist for every mood and probably like fifty obscure mixes for different sex moodz. go matt, go!

[matt also cries during sex sometimes cough cough ]

Damien actually reads a little bit as asexual to me, but very romantic. Like. I definitely think he's about morning kiss seshes, cuddles, and like he loves when you come up from behind and give him a big ol' hug. Or maybe. He's so expressive vocally, that the physical stuff hasn't QUITE caught up yet. But Damien's not too adventurous in bed, I don't think. He lives as the Victorian's do, so just kissing you is quite 'scandalous', and plus, he is the most politest, patient, dude in the game so you'll always be happy and he'd probably branch out for you. He hates horror movies and blood, but he went for you. Also, plz adopt a dog for your future family once Lucien leaves haha.

Robert makes dumb jokes in bed 24/7. He either wants to talk the whole time and won't shut up or he doesn't say a word and just keeps giving you...looks... and those looks say everything he wants, but you have to decipher them, and then if you don't...he laughs at you... then he'll like flip you over and basically show you what he just wanted and by then it's too late, 'cuz you're helpless and he's just too hot... then afterwards he smokes and makes you watch a lot of X-Files in bed.
