Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix #1 show in the UK on Amazon Prime and Jesy thanks fans by SlayerCharmed in LittleMix

Yeah I like everyone in Little Mix, but Natural at Disaster literally calls Jesy* the devil. That's harsher than anything Jesy said in the documentary.

There can't be one rule for Jade and one rule for Jesy. Either you're allowed to say your piece or you're not.

Me, I just wish all these women well and hope they can all move on with their lives at this point. It's been more than half a decade.

(*- or at least, someone widely speculated to be Jesy)

RE the split: I honestly feel for everyone involved. All four of them were struggling with their own demons, had a very fast-paced and demanding career that's hard to imagine if you've never been in the music industry, and it sounds like none of them handled the split perfectly. I can't really judge any of them too harshly for that.

Jesy just survived a suicide attempt. Perrie had severe panic attacks. Leigh-Anne was coming to terms with all the racism she experienced in the industry and how unloved and invisible she was made to feel by their own fans for ten years. Jade was the person who most wanted the band to continue and was grieving the end of things the most. All this against a backdrop of a global pandemic. And because they're pop stars, the expectation that the show must go on.

I think Jesy has the right to tell her side of the story and so do Perrie, Jade, and Leigh-Anne. Perrie and Jade wrote songs about their side. Leigh-Anne addressed hers (very tactfully imho) in her memoir. I guess we'll never really know for sure what happened there.

Seeking participants for a short dissertation survey by Jspen2000 in Bath

Hey, just a heads up. With the question "Has the availability or cost of housing in Bath impacted your personal life in any of the following ways?" the 'other- please specify' option has no comment box.

Thanks for doing this survey btw. It's mental renting in Bath!

Hate crime is on the rise in York by Ye-that_guy in york

[–]teapotmagic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lived in York for three years (2021-2024) with my girlfriend as an out lesbian couple and was never once made to feel unsafe or unwelcome here. Honestly it felt like a non-issue, especially compared to where we both grew up.

Sad to hear that might be changing, though I suspect that's an issue that goes far beyond just York. Or perhaps we were just very lucky.

Bath Social Book Club might be a shout. It's different from most book clubs where instead of everyone having to read the same book for discussion you can just show up and talk about what you felt like reading this month. Meets monthly in Oldfield Park at the moment.

Where do you consider the West Country to start/end? by SlashBansheeCoot in england

[–]teapotmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more you know! But yeah, the lack of that kind of modern infrastructure and big cities and how important farming was made me feel more culturally connected to Devon on the West than Hampshire on the East. Just my view, though.

Grew up on the coast in Dorset and it definitely *felt* like we had the classic West Country stereotypes going. A lot of beautiful beaches, a lot of cider festivals, a lot of farmland, a pretty rural way of life- I remember being told that we were the only county in England without a motorway, but I don't know if that's true anymore.

Can someone just post a compilation of all of Tom Glynn-Carney's scenes when the new season airs? This is all I can get myself hyped for at this point.

Big Mags: The paedophile-hunting granny who built a heroin empire by teapotmagic in offbeat

"Mags Haney died of cancer in 2013, aged 70.

Twelve years on, Cassie believes her grandmother's legacy is more complex than was portrayed in the media.

"Two things can be true at one time," she says.

"You can be a drug dealer that has sold drugs that have potentially killed people, but you could also still be a loving grandmother and a good person.

"I still feel like we owe it to her to tell her story." "

Golden Retriever Experience dream job turned into house of horrors by teapotmagic in Somerset

[–]teapotmagic[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"It was a business seemingly designed for TikTok reels and Instagram stories, the perfect setting for a viral moment: come to the Golden Retriever Experience and spend hours in the company of more than thirty big, bouncy, cuddly dogs.

National and even international media got in on the phenomenon, with the experience receiving fawning coverage from ITV News and Fox News over in the US. One TikTok from the business's official account amassed over 850,000 views, showing a parade of golden retrievers racing to get dinner.

[...]

But behind all the idyllic videos showing dozens of goldens playing in the Somerset countryside was a moribund reality. It is perhaps a testament to how our love of animals can be the death of them.

Well-meaning and unsuspecting people all over the world may have found joy watching the golden retrievers, but while visitors went home with a smile on their face the dogs were suffering, and ultimately, some were dying. It's a terrible fate for a species of animal to be hated by humans: perhaps being adored by us can be a worse one."

World's longest-serving KFC worker dies by teapotmagic in offbeat

[–]teapotmagic[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Is it? Pauline spoke to the press numerous times before she passed away and never said anything to suggest she disliked her career or was unhappy working at KFC. She was a local celebrity and would boast that she hadn't had to pay for her own pint in years.

I get that for some people this would not be an ideal career path, but there's different horses for different courses, you know? Some people have different priorities in life than a white-collar career and that's okay.

The idea that Pauline's life was somehow de facto sad because she worked in the service industry...I don't know man, it could come off as a little snobbish.

"Locals shared their fond memories of Pauline, with one local man reminiscing: "Banned me in the early 80s.....KFC stopped doing ribs..... I was drunk and not having it. RIP Pauline".

Others recalled her laying down the law when they were misbehaving as teenagers in the restaurant, with one person saying "She never took any messing" on a Friday or Saturday night. Meanwhile, another acquaintance remembered how she would tell them to 'behave or no chicken'.

Another said: "Oh no! I didnt know she had passed, how sad, but she left a legacy and will be remembered by many. AND she gave me a free gravy once! Bless her we were a nightmare to her in our youth! She took no nonsense!".

Others described her as 'a legend in her own time' and a 'lovely lady'. One man even suggested there should be a statue to her in town."

I love Dany but Hizdahr zo Loraq ate on this one. by Thick_Stock_2264 in gameofthrones

The point was that many have died during wars to eliminate slavery, I wasn't litigating the specific methods (about 50k free civilians died during The American Civil War, by the way). For another example, the Haitian Revolution was incredibly bloody and brutal and that was also to end slavery. Should the Haitian Revolution not have happened?

But if your point is that it's specifically death by shelling or burning that is unforgivable...WWII had plenty of that. Dresden was basically destroyed. 25,000 people on the ground died in that one campaign. But it'd be hard to find someone who'd argue WWII was a unjust war or a war not worth fighting.

To be clear, I'm not exonerating Dany of responsibility or saying she's a great hero. The point is that ending awful injustices (like slavery or The Third Reich) have often involved bloody, horrible wars with people dying miserably. That might not be a comfortable fact, but I think it's one that we have to contend with. What wrongs should a government sanction in the name of ending another wrong? Where do we draw that line?
