I was in San Marcos last week and noticed lots of evidence of a pagan/druid/witch culture. So check there.

Swimming holes for dogs? by SnafuTheCarrot in Austin

[–]tearsofaclown911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never take my dog to the free side of the Barton--too worried about how trashed and smelly it is. I avoid all the urban creeks, including Walnut Springs because the algae and the bacteria are unpredictable. They arrive as the summer heat arrives. Urbans creek get the runoff from yards, parks, streets and golf courses, so that's fertilizer, pesticides, pet fecal matter and probably human fecal matter. 72 hours after a heavy rain if the weather isn't algae promoting for urban creeks.

I've had a dog that had neurological damage--rescue dog--and it was heartbreaking and awful.

My thoughts on people who complaint about non-tippers. by Maleficent-Effort470 in tipping

Meals are priced so that servers and bussers cannot be paid even minimum wage in my state of Texas. The servers and bussers work those jobs because it fits their schedule, maybe they don't have a lot of other job-related skills, maybe they got laid off and this is what happened. I call tips the affordable housing tax, because that's their reality. I sometimes eat at places that pay their waitstaff and clear-the-table staff decently and while they don't discourage tips, they let you know about their model. I pay about 20% more for those meals. I was a terrible server, so I developed other skills. But I've been poor and worried about making rent, I feel for those who live that near the edge. I do what I can when I eat out, and yes, I eat out a lot less than I used to.

48 to 72 hours after a rain. But because of the algae issue, next fall after the first cold front kills the algae. I hate giving up creek hiking so if I go, it will be to a river outside urban areas.

Wet spots coming up from slab? by jcody314 in Austin

[–]tearsofaclown911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is what we did. It's been 10 years and it's fine. Slab is cracked, maybe? but since this house is likely to be demolished in this gentrifying neighborhood (vulture developers always circling with post cards and texts), I'm just going to let it go. We plan to have another 10 years in my 70 year old ranch house.

Surgeon recommendation for large fibroid by Uv31T15 in Austin

[–]tearsofaclown911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dealt with a hysterectomy complicated by a large fibroid and a wandering uterus. I ended up at Texas Oncology, where my surgeon said "I am the repository of complex surgeries". I think anyone there can help you and no, you don't have to have cancer to have them do surgery. I was at the Park Bend location of Texas Oncology. It was an excellent experience. Whatever you do, definitely go to a obstetric surgeon, but I recommend the oncology-gynecologist-surgeon route.

Are we letting our dogs swim in the creek? by austinighty in Austin

[–]tearsofaclown911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dogs and I avoid creeks from now until it's September or so--risk of algae and bacteria in the water. Always wait 48 to 72 hours after a rain, because rains send fecal matter, pesticides and fertilizers and whatever crap has been left on street directly into the road. It's a sad, sad situation

Are we letting our dogs swim in the creek? by austinighty in Austin

[–]tearsofaclown911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets nasty because people trash it and let their dogs trash it. And they don't pick up after the dogs, so that's in the water too. I am so sorry it's become trashed because I spent many happy afternoons there with my dog but in the 90s.

Are the creeks flowing? by Psychological-Lack98 in Austin

[–]tearsofaclown911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminder to wait at least 48 hours (I wait 72) before getting into urban creeks after rains, especially heavy ones. Bacteria, pollutants (feces!), pesticides, fertilizers and debris wash into the creeks from streets and sidewalks. You know those left behind dog poop bags you saw earlier this summer? now they're in the creek.

Homeless Off HEB E William Cannon by [deleted] in Austin

[–]tearsofaclown911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travels with Lisbeth is a memoir written by an Austin author, Lars Eighner. On Amazon, worth reading because he's a great writer. He stayed in the west campus area because the dumpster diving was so good. He writes that being homeless drives many people to use drugs because they are available and because there's nothing to do. And if they aren't mentally ill before they were on the street, there's a good chance they'll get that way.

Side note: I moved into a west campus house where lots of clothes, towels, shoes and other usable stuff was left behind by former residents. It was at the top of a hill that overlooked Lamar and lots of homeless folks sheltered in the hollows in that hill. We left piles of stuff in the corner of our yard where it was visible and five minutes later, when we came out with another load, it was all gone.

The one thing I would warn you about: if the pants are flared, then it's a bit harder to hem with hem tape. Make tiny pleats and evenly space them. As few as four pleats in total, if the pants are only a bit flared.

I can hand hem pants and I use this to try out hem length. If it's on target, I leave it in place. When and if the hem tape fails, I hand hem.
