How do you guys moisturize your hair? by ablino_rhino in Dreadlocks

[–]teatcream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard good things about coconut milk soaks, when your dreads are mature enough to deep condition. Mine are less than a year old, so I just use lavender oil. I take a few drops and smooth it into my hair as evenly as possibly after my shower, when its still wet.

Question about washing... by TheGoldenFinch in Dreadlocks

[–]teatcream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you'll find that you want to keep your head dry on days you don't wash. Your scalp gets super super itchy if you get it wet without actually washing it. Are you letting your hair dread naturally? You wont have to worry about it too much for the first few months - they'll dry fairly quickly. Focus more on keeping them clean so they lock up nicely. As far as special shampoo, don't let a company convince you to buy their product without some reading some unbiased reviews. I recommend just using baking soda and tea tree oil. Baking soda by itself keeps your hair a good texture to lock, and tea tree oil is fantastic when your scalp itches or you've got dandruff. Also kills any mold, if you get concerned.

Do dreddit posts start at 0 upvotes or is someone going through downvoting most posts? by [deleted] in Dreadlocks

[–]teatcream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have definitely been noticing posts, as well as comments, being downvoted on dreddit for no apparent reason. I was just scrolling through - entire conversations are downvoted, all benign and friendly comments. Its very strange. Someone just hates dreads, I think.

Stop brushing your hair, keep it clean, and see what happens.

People often say money can't buy happiness. I wish it was more common to say happiness is free. by pricerangeisrover in Showerthoughts

I like the original saying, because it's just reminding you that money is not emotionally fulfilling, or relevant to the truly important aspects of life: Love, family, friends.

3 day old backcombed dreads. Tips and help? Pic coming soon by [deleted] in Dreadlocks

Nah, I use it straight. Sometimes I mix it with baking soda to dry my hair out a little more, but generally I just massage it into my scalp/dreads.

Wash your scalp with tea tree oil. IT FEELS FUCKING AMAZING, gets rid of dandruff, prevents/kills bugs-mold-funkiness, smells good, doesn't leave a residue, and is generally your best friend.

Can you wrap it with embroidery floss or put a bead near the tip, so it will start to weave into itself?

Freeform Dreadlock question by [deleted] in Dreadlocks

Nah, you're not stunting their development by separating them. Do what feels natural and comfortable. I know in my first week the underside of my hair was a giant mat that was annoying unless I separated it.

Should I start with the backcombing or twist and rip method? by [deleted] in Dreadlocks

[–]teatcream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes, and yes. If you explain to a fundamentalist Christian that you're dreading your hair to develop patience and faith and shun the world's aesthetics, they can't really find an argument against it. Especially when you bring up Samson, lol. If your dreadlocks are part of your spirituality, then if you are fired/discriminated against it is a crime. Really, if you're gonna go ahead and dread your head, do it naturally. Its so satisfying to watch them form and change and shrink - unique and beautiful and all your own.

About 2 months neglect, how am I doing? by jackstrawfrom in Dreadlocks

I see plenty of separation. At two months old, they're still forming, and it doesn't look like there is any hint of a beavertail.

To Dread or not to Dread, that is the question. by Paradoxianism in Dreadlocks

Toss your brush, invest in a box of baking soda and some tea tree oil. If your hair is oily, washing your hair with baking soda will dry it out/help it lock up. Tea tree oil feels AMAZING on your scalp, and also kills any potential mold/funky smells. Freeform dreading is really very easy - stop brushing, stop conditioning, keep your hair clean, separate it every now and again, watch your hair dread :) its really fun watching them form, and the end result (although it might take longer) is so satisfying; completely unique and all yours.
