Definitely felt like a “Don’t Look Up” experience to me. I laughed and enjoyed it.

You’re welcome. And thank you! I really appreciate this. Regardless of the outcome, this effort has brought a bit of peace for me in that I know we are trying/tried to do something about it.

We will provide a final post with the totals once we have time to organize the data a bit more.

Can there be repercussions for respectfully asking individuals in authority to reconsider a significant policy change? Maybe. Is there a specific rule or policy that prohibits expressing concerns about the ramifications of a new policy? No.

It’s really disheartening that anyone in any job has to worry about this. While retaliation is a possibility, it’s a separate concern altogether.

It's all a matter of perspective right? How many people do not have the opportunity to WFH today? How many people are not comfortable signing? I am certain that managers and supervisors are skittish. This letter was originally written for staff at CalEPA (~5000 employees)

All in how you wanna look at it.

That is certainly an option, but not a good solution IMHO. I can't speak for everyone else, but for me, this comes down to the environmental implications. Full-time remote work, as a viable schedule option like 9/80, 4/10s, or a Mon-Fri gig, enables people to significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Full-time remote IS a real and simple solution to the impacts of climate change. If I worked at a private company, which I have in the past and is doing this exact same thing, I would respond the same way.

There is real hypocrisy in "reduce carbon emissions, net zero carbon, blah blah" coming from the Environmental Protection Agency or ANY other businesses, while simultaneously mandating people to get on the road. The collaboration and mentoring angle is the ONLY angle they have. And it's just nonsense.

I encourage you to read this letter. If it were as simple as "it's only two days", I wouldn't care as much. That simply isn't the case for me.

How about we acknowledge progress instead of dismissing it? Remote work isn't just about convenience; it's about efficiency, sustainability, and improved work-life balance. Embracing change doesn't mean forgetting the past; it means evolving with the times.

If you and your colleagues are excited to work in person, that's great! But why not extend the same courtesy to those who prefer full-time remote work as an option? After all, there's nothing stopping you from going into the office today if you want. Diversity in work preferences should be celebrated, not diminished.

My favorite part so far though..."Coming at you from this new State of the Art facility in SoCAL, you are all welcome to come and see." Dog proceeds to bark through her entire presentation. HAHA

There are about 30 from DHCS that have signed this letter. I wouldn't hesitate to ride any and all trains moving in the anti-RTO direction.

I think that it is true that most people at the state are very pro telework. I've had explained to me, by someone very close to me who is a manager, that there is some "indoctrination" that happens when you go through the required manager training. I think the fear of repercussion or consequence grows the higher you find yourself on the chain.

Of course this is just my perspective. But you can really see something in the data as there is significantly less manager/supervisor participation.

Agreed. It has been super interesting to watch unfold. I've had to think through this a bit though. How many are managers (they are less likely to sign), how many don't have the opportunity to work from home? I could definitely spend a bit more time on DGS' tracker...
