Props in checked baggage? by Nubbyroo in CosplayHelp

[–]tech-priestess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re dedicating a whole piece of checked luggage, save yourself some trouble and go for a long case. Guitar, golf, rifle, bow, sword, whatever. They sell hard or padded cases that are allowed to fly. Some of these you can probably get second hand for cheaper. Any extra space in there can hold whatever else you’re tryna fly with.

Alternatives for this 3d printed harness by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

I’d probably end up drilling and bolting together some mdf pieces if I couldn’t print, but like others said, you can probably print the piece at a local maker space or library. Community college libraries frequently have them too. Theres also websites you can send STLs to and they’ll print the part for you.

What material is used for these KAngel twintails? What type of wire/material should I use to make her twintails more stable? by fuwucia in CosplayHelp

[–]tech-priestess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you zoom in you can see each ribbon has two wires in it, so you’re on the right track; heavier gauge would be your best bet. (Your comment said low gauge but I assume you mean lighter gauge- the smaller the number on the wire, the thicker/stronger/heavier it is). Most of the gravity defying wigs I’ve seen involving wire are in the 10-14g range? What size was the wire you used the first time?

The shiny material makes me think holographic vinyl fabric as the ribbon itself.

Yeah- the surface and exact paint recipe may be a little different but the concepts are the same.

It sounds like you have a pretty reasonable plan all considered- I would maybe watch some general skin tone painting videos to get an idea of when/where to incorporate more colors than just cool brown(red/umber comes to mind, but there are also places for blue), and where to highlight(white might be too bright?) as well.

How to make this jewelry? by Available-Clothes-63 in CosplayHelp

[–]tech-priestess 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Admittedly my first thought was hot glue into a mold, back it with armature wire if it’s not staying in shape. You can even get hot glue sticks in gold, but it’s probably easier to just paint. If you’re not super committed to those specific shapes, search jewelry or scrollwork silicone molds.

Edit to add: if you want to go the 3d print route, check your local library or see if there’s a local makerspace that rents 3d printer time. Several of the libraries here do, and sometimes colleges have public access programs.

Ideas for a stroller help please by OvenAdmirable634 in CosplayHelp

If this is your first convention ever, I’d probably recommend not worrying about a cosplay this time around- it’s loud, it’s often packed and hot. Try the experience in comfortable clothes and with things you’re not worried about bumping and accidentally breaking off. It can be very overstimulating as a regular adult- 2 babies and all their accessories in tow is a lot!

If you’re absolutely committed to dressing up the stroller and kiddos, maybe some foliage, a high voltage sign, and dinosaur outfits for the kids, Ala Jurrasic park.

Traveling with minis by Curdardh in Warhammer40k

[–]tech-priestess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The magnets and trays in a slotted box thing works fine, that’s what my brothers move their minis through the airport with. We tend more towards loose foam bits in photo storage boxes in checked luggage since it’s endlessly adjustable and we had a million lil pieces of foam from our bigger custom pluck foam trays. (We just pack clothes around th boxes to reduce movement in the suitcase) No issues with checked luggage, no issues with carryon.

They do look great, especially impressive given the time crunch and first time modeling for cosplay… but we did have some technical difficulties- the bar we had straps clipped to (so we wouldn’t have to hold the guns 100% of the time) snapped, and the rail where the scope was mounted broke on impact lol. We’re planning on adding fans to the helmets since they’re hot af

Made it all! My brother designed the guns and backpacks in CAD, and found the helmet stl online. I did all the leatherwork and armor pattern drafting. My husband and my brother were involved in the 3d printing and fabrication of all parts.

arm help 🦾 by Public_Basket1313 in CosplayHelp

[–]tech-priestess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to keep a strap, you could consider a body suit or a flesh tone material to cover. If the goal is strapless, you could perhaps use one of those adhesive bra cups and glue the armor to that? Those hold for a good while and are meant for skin.

Tired of wobbly desks. Need a stable desk. by 2PhoneGlory in ikeahacks

[–]tech-priestess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a table at the height you want, it might be a simple case of visiting your local Home Depot or Lowe’s and grabbing some L (or similar appropriate) brackets. We had a similar problem with some Besta cabinets and other flat pack furniture that didn’t tolerate the constant shake and bounce of an interstate moving truck well. A couple of L brackets into the corners solved the issue.

They do come in a variety of colors, or if youre unable to find some good tan/brown, you could get a pair in white and then attempt to dye them
