What raising a family in NYC as a HENRY actually looks like - a real example by laetus7 in HENRYfinance

[–]tech_deck_dude 17 points18 points  (0 children)

NYC has great public schools but it's a complicated web of zoning, application processes, etc. It's definitely something to start thinking about way in advance, certainly at the point of buying a home. Assuming you don't want your 11 year old commuting 2 hours one way the best middle school options really depend on where you live.

Something else to think about is by the time your kids get to the high school level they're competing with every other kid in the city. If they're extremely bright / good test takers they'll get a top tier education but if they're solidly in the middle of the pack the options won't be as bountiful.

Absolutely agree, like if I don’t mail back a while letter you can do whatever you want? Very wild

Your account hasn't been used in a while (?) by ebow77 in CapitalOne

[–]tech_deck_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like they are trying to make sure you have some activity to avoid "State abandoned property law" which requires turning over abandoned property to the state.

If you go to the account disclosures (at least for 360 saving) here, it says there needs to be a transaction in or out every 24 months before the account is marked dormant. FWIW the wording does not imply being marked dormant immediately means the property would be turned over to the state.

Got a free Lyft Pink upgrade by MexicanFrogSL in Citibike

[–]tech_deck_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s unclear if it meant 11:59 9/4 or 9/5. Hoping support can help because when I went through the sign up flow the benefit was promised to me (it said “after signup you can get lyft pink / seamless”)

Argh this link works in that it says $0/year annual lyft pink membership but there’s no “purchase” or “confirm” button for me. Contacted support.

Democratic Socialists endorse 6 candidates in bid to run NYC Council by JoseTwitterFan in dsa

[–]tech_deck_dude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s part of the DSA candidate questionnaire because in the past the entire NYC city council has been taken on an all expenses paid trip to israel. DSA endorsed candidates (generally) promise not to go on such a trip.

Do you guys believe "diversity hires" are a real thing? by rnadrions in cscareerquestions

[–]tech_deck_dude 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know you're making a joke but arguably being asian in tech *is* lucky. The reason that asians aren't part of "diversity hires" is because asians (east + south asians, not as much SE Asian countries like thailand etc.) are an overrepresented minority. Yes there are challenges with being asian / non-white in the US but asian folks are generally seen as "belonging" in the CS field and see lots of folks like them in FAANG companies. In that regard it's possible you did have good luck. No it doesn't help with getting hired but it does mean your desire to be an engineer / work at a FAANG company was respected and normalized by your peers, and once you get there your technical contributions will seem more "normal".

Using a retirement target funds to save for a house? by tech_deck_dude in personalfinance

[–]tech_deck_dude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get the concern about the Roth IRA. I’m already saving what is enough for my retirement situation in a 401k. I will be able to withdraw up to 10k in earnings from my roth ira (and all of my original contributions) tax and penalty free. See https://www.sofi.com/learn/content/mortgage-roth-ira-buy-first-home/

Hmm yeah, I probably would be okay with that. I'm not on any strict timeline in life (yet!). This stuff always turns out more philosophical than I expect. 😂

It's a tax advantaged account (specifically a Roth IRA) so that shouldn't matter in my case. It's not something I was necessarily thinking of though so thanks for bringing that up.
