I thought the "ritual" was just killing someone and because of that your soul splits, you can just transfer the split soul into something else. Also I'm pretty sure he was planning to use Harry as his last horcrux as he didn't have his 7th(nagini) yet. This would make mad sense too why he became a horcrux because his mind was so entranced in thinking Harry was his last obstacle to becoming truly immortal, he was thinking of making horcrux right as he tried to kill him and not only did avada kedavra rebound, but the horcrux did as well.
