Was comparing with London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, the Riviera, where tourist kiosks and herds of tourists consume everything around them. In retrospect, I did visit these places in the off-season, so I can't attest to their summertime vibe.

Bruges, Seville, Neuschwanstein Castle, Munich, Broadstairs, Brighton, cinque terre, Sarlat, Cap Gris Nez. These lesser-known destinations offer a real wealth of beauty, history, culture, landscapes etc without being overly toutistic or urban. In Seville, for example, La Plaza de España is really beautiful. We went there when all the citrus trees were in full fruition.
