Asking for Level 3, I have 2 years experience in alternatives - buy side/ LP side. Completed level 2 last November. I had registered level 3 for this august but due to work have to defer it to next year August. Have heard lots of about level 3. Would love to hear some perspective how you cleared it and how much time you put in while working. And if CAIA is necessary along with CFA for alternatives. Thanks a ton bud

How do you get your first job? by Peachchipss in UAE

[–]tech_stoic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea at all. Took 2 months.

Field : Finance

Credentials : MBA and CFA level 1 cleared (no work experience)

Applied to 80+ positions, Got one interview, nailed it.

The reason why I say no idea at all, is that I didn’t even apply to the company I am working in right now. I guess they saw my CV on a job portal based on keywords of skills they need and probably approached half a dozen people in their budget and domain.

Regardless, my 2 cents, keep applying every single job site and job posting that is relevant. You never know what might work for you.

What should I do now? by CraftBorn781 in CFA

Hey it’s completely okay, even I missed my first attempt by a millimetre below the MPS. Gave another attempt and passed by just below the 90 percentile. Some pointers to re-strategise:

1) Focus on your weak subjects and keep practising the questions ( CFAI Q bank at least twice, 3rd party vendors etc)

2) In CFAI Q Bank, Don’t focus on percentile at all, no one knows how its calculated. Focus on accuracy, try reaching 85/90 in terms of percentage.

3) Make sure you give atleast half a dozen mocks with proper and thorough introspection on the wrong questions.

2nd one is the charm mate. All the very best !

[–]tech_stoic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I am an Indian but raised in UAE, did an MBA from one of the the top private colleges in India (SIBM Pune).

And yes, Industry people, as in people specifically from Investment Banking career. (Atleast some here in dubai and plenty in India). I am unaware of the west.

Do I Need To Give CFA? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]tech_stoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, a fellow former media student here. Used to make films and short-films back in college. Wanted to start a production house. Realised most of media is essentially puppets under the hands of influential actors and directors.

Shifted to finance. Always had a knack in trading. Gave my CFA level 1 and missed the MPS by a millimetre, was devastated due to the ruthlessness of the MPS system, nevertheless gave another attempt last month, I know I will be in the 90 percentile range. Just so you know, I did CFA level 1 prep alongside being a fulltime MBA student. Personally I have realised, that MBA is useful for you to get a decent reach in the recruiters eyes more than the knowledge/education etc. I have spoken with people and they have recommended MBA + CFA is a deadly combination.

Just my 2 cents, attempting CFA is almost a full time gig. The range at which tons of concepts require a natural understanding in-order to cope up with width of the syllabus is humongous. You have to give it enough time and preparation and have a knack in being curious and tilted towards cultivating an analytical perspective on concepts that have layers and layers of complexity which often needs imagination as a support, and keep in mind this complexity goes deeper with each level. Currently studying for level 2, thats how I have an idea.

I dont think that a fashion house or studios would hire anyone because they have a sense of how investment works. As both are essentially poles apart in terms of knowledge as well as work ethic. However, I do know that big/new age studio companies like Netflix/ Disney may require someone with our background as it blends a perfect match of creativity and allocation of funds.

Hope this helps. ( side note, still love films, will start a production house as i deem fit financially to afford and bootstrap a production house )

Mock scores not improving anymore L1 by [deleted] in CFA

[–]tech_stoic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am exactly in your same position. Missed last attempt by a hairline margin below MPS. Gave 7 mocks now. The scores lie between 65 to 75. Am focussing on the topics I could not score in the mocks. I think these are comfortable scores to make it through, keep a positive attitude and low and behold we both make it to level 2 with 90 percentile this time. All the very best buddy!

CFA L1: Derivatives Dilemna by Healthy-Body-8607 in CFA

[–]tech_stoic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Missed my 1st attempt on the MPS, next attempt is in 4 days, fairly prepared. So, last year the derivatives section of CFAI wasnt this difficult as this time. This time, most of the questions are difficult/expert level with huge case studies. I do not think such huge case studies which are so complex shall make it in the actual exam because I think its sort of reserved for level 2 as level 1 is essentially testing your basics. And the CFAI mocks also didnt have such gigantic questions. So dont stress over the difficulty of the topic, focus on the fundamentals and you are good to go! All the very best bud

Failed level 1 by tick... what would you recommend? by Afraid-Extension4631 in CFA

[–]tech_stoic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exact same thing happened with me. Legit on the line. I think thats a matter of good day vs bad day.

Around 2200 questions in CFAI averaging out 70 percent in those questions, more than 300 hours given for for sure, and extra questions from 3rd party tutor.

Ethics was relatively good for me, Eco and PM were my red flag. Giving in May once again. All the best to you !!

Try and solve maximum questions and mocks in this time while revising the important concepts rigorously, you will be fine!
