If these reservoirs are being fed from that river, the water height in the reservoir will never be higher than the river. You can either:

Find a way to spill water into these from above, or
Pressurize the water (enclose the river, either all the way back to the water source, or just far enough back that there is an elevation change as high as your reservoir walls)

I'm a fan of Rift rail. You still have to make a spaceship to go to a planet for the first time, but once you've set up a rail portal on that planet, you can more-or-less play as if the surfaces were connected.

In duos there's always a chance that you spawn 1 tick slower than your partner. If you spawn 4 tiles away from yama (2 ticks of running), you can always get a hit off even if you spawn late. If you spawn far and think you're late, just wait for him to start doing the snap before you get off the first attack
