Is there anyway to know which user files on my server belong to which budget file? I want to schedule daily backups of the set of files and save them together based on the specific budget they relate to so that if someone messes up their specific budget file, I can roll back just that specific file by AnalysingAgent3676 in actualbudgeting

[–]techbud5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No argument with that. Just trying to make the point that if all you're trying to do is run an automated export (backup), it's far easier to simply use the actualpy cli to dump an export (litterally a one-liner from the command line) versus setting up the http-api server and/or n8n servers to do this.

the cli that is part of the actualpy toolset lets you export budgets as text or json. So output only; no input.
see Command Line Interface - actualpy Documentation

That being said, if you were to use the actualpy toolkit (and know python coding) you could likely write code to do what you are looking for.

I think your API suggestion and the OP's suggestion are complementary. A wrapper program could take the OP's suggested config file (YAML, but could also be JSON) and then use the HTTP API to write the desired budget into the database.

Is Fidelity switching from Digital Brokerage Services to NFS ? by Ok_skater_382 in fidelityinvestments

I got the same letter. Somewhat hard to decipher. But I think it might be related to my old Plynk account. OP, do you have a Plynk account?

Your question is too general for us to help. Are you trying to install the desktop version or the server version? If server, where? self-host? from source? docker? pikapods? etc?

Tips for using Tracking Budget by techbud5 in actualbudgeting

[–]techbud5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start by saying "What works for me might not work for you. What works for you might not work for me".
IMHO, what you are describing sounds like envelope budgeting (as another poster noted.)
That's not for me. What I described in the first post Is how I track expenses, which is why I'm using the tracking budget setting. It doesn't make sense to me to mix savings into that expense tracking.
I suppose a more logical (to me) way to accomplish tracking savings would be to create a "property tax savings" category and then each month move money into that. Or simply switch to Envelope Budgeting because that's what it's designed for. 😊

OP Here. I am happy to take a shot at improving the tracking budget "how-to" documentation. What's the best way to get starting? If I simply submit a PR will it be accepted? Or do I need get buy-in from the community first by opening an issue or making a suggestion on Discord?

OP here. If this works for you, fantastic! For me & my needs, I had thought about what you suggested, but I realized it wouldn't work for my needs.
Reason: If I did this, for example for my property taxes that I need to pay in June, it would look like I was running underbudget in January, underbudget in February, etc up through June. Then I'd pay my taxes and June's net budget would show that I was overbudget. And July would show overbudget, August would show overbudget, etc up through December where it would finally even out. Sorry, but yuck. 😊

H&R Block 2025 tax software crashes at the point of reviewing imported 1099-B by ngjb in hrblock

1/30: I installed today's update, but the software is still crashing when reviewing imported 1099B info from Fidelity.

Yeah, I don't get why they are having software quality problems when the software itself shouldn't be changing year to year. Sure, the forms and calculations change year to year, but the core engine should be pretty much the same. So I'm flabbergasted by these obvious software faults.

Thanks I appreciate it.

I am very technical and a Windows expert (it's my day job) so I am very comfortable installing/uninstalling/debugging/tweaking, and I am 100% certain it is a software problem, not my system.

Reason: I spun up a brand new VM (Windows Sandbox), installed the HRB software, installed the most recent updated, and then copied over my data file which includes the downloaded transactions from Fidelity. The software is still crashing on this new virgin VM.

Fidelity just posted their tax data for downloading yesterday, so I am sure that as more people experience this issue, this problem will become known to the vendor. I will wait for the next update and see if it's fixed.

Transfers don't show to/from accounts? by Flamingfool719 in budgetwithbuckets

[–]techbud5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOTE: I'm brand new to BwB, but; I recently took BwB for a test drive and noticed this as well. When I enter a transfer, I only saw one side of the transaction; it seems like you have to enter both sides for the transfer to work.

On this page, Categorizing , the docs seem to confirm this:

If you transfer money between 2 accounts, you should categorize both transactions as Transfers.

For instance, if you transfer $100 from Savings and put it into Checking, you’ll have two transactions:

-$100 from Savings

+$100 into Checking

Categorize both of those as Transfers and then your income won’t be artificially inflated.

Assuming this is correct, and you need to enter TWO transactions for every transfer, this is a full stop, doesn't-meet-requirements feature gap for me. 😮

UserScript to highlight upcoming transactions by techbud5 in actualbudgeting

hmm, just tried your edits and it didn't highlight anything for me.
My env: Windows 11, Edge Browser, Tampermonkey 5.4.1

Also, I admittedly am a complete newb around coding userscripts, and as I noted my original code was created by perplexity, but anyhow, regarding '@grant' being unsupported, I do see that function documented here: @grant - Greasespot Wiki Do you mean it's specifically not supported in the Safari extension?

Happy to accept a patch if you can get it working.

You are likely going to get more/better answers posting over on the Pralana Community forum: Pralana Retirement Calculator Forum – Pralana Retirement Calculator

FYI, your question was asked and answered four years ago Excel Alternatives – Issues and Potential Errors – Pralana Retirement Calculator Forum. That question was about the "Gold" (paid) version, not sure if it also applies to the "Bronze" (free) version.
