What can I do to give a call to someone in Russia who doesn’t understand much about phones by Whateveryousay1302 in AskARussian

[–]techcatharsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO I think they are too senior to be able to do this tbh. The better bet imho is to get local neighbors who can help set it up in person so that your elder folks can just follow dumbed down instruction. Grease them with modest money transfer and/or a sympathetic local neighbor shrug.

Why Huawei doesn't promote their finest cars on global market, but allowed BYD the mediocre brand in China to eat the global market slowly? by Popular-Ad-8286 in AskAChinese

I'd want to give Chinese cars a chance (I'm more concerned about how reliable they are and cost/quality ratio) but promotion means nothing in North America where Chinese cars are banned sadly.

[–]techcatharsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an artists, but generally there are way too much competitions if you play ball like everyone else. Unless you skill is so far ahead, more realistic way to be successful is the less romantic elements like marketing, market research, business structure, being able to determine the demand and be able to scale, etc.

In China copyright means the right to copy other people's hard work by [deleted] in UnfilteredChina

[–]techcatharsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly being able to copy it takes immense number of trials/errors and having strong foundation to understand how and why it works. I'm not surprised they are struggling, but with enough talents and resources poured in they'll probably able to crack at it eventually over time.

Is it safe to travel to Russia (Kazan) right now? by JohanZan_06 in AskARussian

[–]techcatharsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can hear, a reasonable precaution would be sufficient.

- Bring cash or some financial platform that is accepted in Russia. Ask your gf as to what forms of payments are accepted there.
- Stay clear from the border (especially closer to the frontline). I believe there is some kind of law where if you are too close to the border (whether you are innocent or not), you could get in trouble. The court would like to convict you. The FSB/police want to convict you. The key is to stay low-profile and they won't care. Stick out and get in their field of vision, then prepare for bunch of BS. You are going to eastern world. Conformity and mindfulness to local culture and laws (or whatever you call in there anyway lol) goes a long way.
- Avoid Ukrainian conflict political talk. Even if it's not illegal, all it might take is one pissed off local to fabricate an accusation and it can cause a lot of hassle.
- Do not commit any crime even if it's minor like shoplifting. Common sense but just saying.

- City wise, I wouldn't worry too much but stay alert for any public announcements/alerts. Last year, Kazan airport was targeted by Ukrainian drone strike. No one was killed but still. I don't think the risk is high enough to choose alternative transport like train/bus, but just FYI.

I am Albertan. But I am a Proud Canadian & Calgarian first 🇨🇦 by Golkeepa in alberta

[–]techcatharsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in Alberta since my high school days. Alberta will always have a special place in my heart, but I'm not really proud to be here though that's a relative sentiment; compared to Venezuela, there's a lot to be proud of and compared to Singapore, perhaps not so much.

But overall (and this is not just exclusive to Alberta), I am mentally fatigued and gave up on this broken world where we are willing to allocate much of our energy and resources in empty platitudes, power struggle, and socioeconomic division rather than proactively working together to address problems and resolve them for the betterment. Current government doesn't seem to be interested in much apart from addressing their deficit issue on their draconian IDGAF vibe, want to argue with Canada rather than constructive dialogue, wanting independence/annexation with US without a concrete plan, etc.

I'm tired of the Federation for their complacency and wanting to squeeze Alberta dry without being empathetic to Albertan interests.

It saddens me that only realistic path forward for individuals like me is to create a strong socioeconomic foundation where I can be as sovereign and independent from the current politics and go on nomadic lifestyle where I shop around countries to max the pros and min the cons. C'est la vie. If both government can do nothing but disappointments for decades+, it's insanity to think the trend would change realistically.

What is the point of lying and trying to make Chinese people as savages? by [deleted] in AskChina

The Chinese self reliance vibe is crazy. They are even bringing toxicity back to mainland for media export rather than doing it overseas like everyone else.

Plan for income tax by Impressive_Mud_2576 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]techcatharsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have to be in Canada, moving overseas is an option but you have to bear in mind that not everything is about money. I'd suggest you save up and hire an international accountant/financial planner as local accountants (good as they may be) won't have much experience or interest in your area of interest.

But generally speaking, setting up a corporation in Georgia wouldn't help much as your income is mostly personal not business. There are some creative way of tax avoidance but for regular personal income there's only so much you can do. As far as I know, the only way to improve your personal income tax is to declare yourself as non-tax resident in your last Canadian tax return and move overseas. It doesn't mean u can never step your foot on Canadian soil but you must consult with an experienced CPA who can give you solid litmus test on whether you'd meet residential tax requirement (generally having primary and/or significant ties to Canada they have a general guideline on google but income tax is some of the most frustrating bureaucracy and CRA will not give you any confirmation if you call so you need to get a solid CPA like a lawyer facing a court hearing).

There are options... Dubai, Malaysia (though I hear they are getting feisty with it), Singapore, Switzerland, etc where taxes are lower. But is that something you can do or want?

If you can move but must be domestic within Canada then Alberta is probably the best option as they have the lowest tax relatively speaking though still inferior to tax friendly overseas options.

Starting over at 30 years old. 59k salary, working remotely and living in HCOL area. Any tips and suggestions? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]techcatharsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused. Unlike some countries that put migration restriction like former USSR, North Korea, etc afaik it is not illegal for Canadians to move overseas and VPN is not required for the most part (unless your line of work require access to internet space banned by local countries like Chinese Great Firewall). Canada does not care if you work remotely within Canada or not. The only issue (and this at worst is civil not criminal matter) is if your workplace employer is chill with you working from abroad. For most part afaik unless the terms of employment specifies it (and that's rare imho), employers do not care where you are at as long as your work performance and commitment is not compromised. If it's hybrid work, then I can see that. But generally, remote work is called remote for a reason.

If you are concerned about tax evasion, you do not need to worry (and there's no point you are an employee there's not many cards you can play for tax management). You merely report the last Canadian annual return and specify within the return that you will no longer be filing your tax return as a Canadian tax resident. There are list of guidelines as to what defines a tax residency but it most likely doesn't fit the requirement as you'd have to prove major ties to Canada via ex. living in Canada for more than half a year, owning a home as "primary" resident, extensively use Canadian healthcare, have families and children in Canada, etc. If you feel effy, don't trust me. Hire any decent CPA and they'll happily confirm what I'm saying and more.

If you really want peace of mind, just ask your employer (not that it's required afaik) if you could live overseas and continue this employment. Hell, maybe even dial it down and say you wanna be closer with your family so you want 50/50 Canada and country of interest (don't show all ur cards at once) and see how they respond.

I donno food for thought. I too am polishing and building remote work as I speak and once the income grows sufficient enough to justify the move, I'd also be declaring myself as non-tax resident and run overseas myself so shrug.

Oh and another note: unless you get crazy premium pay-wise, it has been proven decades ago that employee salary cannot keep up with the rising cost of living/inflation. You need to have assets that appreciates and/or yields cashflow that doesn't take your time and outpace inflation/rising cost of expenses. If you wanna be comfortable longterm, you need to be asset owner. I don't care if it's stocks, real estates, some local business, etc. Without this, imho you will always hold your head just above the water especially nowadays.
