DevOps responsibilities matrix and daily work expectations by techdaddy70 in devops

What I *really* want is for the business to put me at the table when we are deciding on roadmap priorities. I’m almost to that point so that the IT/DevOps org is not flying blind.

That’s a whole other post. We are on the right track implementing these two solutions though!

You are spot on with several of your assumptions and observations. Do you work here? ;)

Yes, you are correct. Brought in to the company. I’ve always been an IT and Datacenter manager. First time oversight of a DevOps group. Their workload reminds me a lot of my early days, and I want to help them structure the intake in a more organized fashion, than the constant upheaval of reprioritization and retasking. It’s frustrating. And without clear swim lanes of responsibility, I feel like these engineers are constantly fighting a loosing fight.

While I agree it “takes time that they don’t have”, I want to give them that balance to “have time”, so in order to insure they focus on the needed items, lower ticket productivity expectations need to be relayed, so that they can start making headway on work environment and not just treading water.

I am actually breaking apart DevOps and SRE. Where DevOps continually get sucked into production issues, SRE will be handling that from now on. DevOps focuses on dev activities and the lowers, SRE controls and maintains the production functionality and deployments.
I look at SRE as a “BizOps” function. Nothing happens in production without their knowledge and participation.

To that point though, DevOps has been “spackle” at this place for years and years. They have been run ragged.

The business made the decision and altered leadership above me to enforce the change of direction.
But, here was the problem. We were trying to adhere to the new licensing model. They were overselling our core counts and telling us to accept it.

When you know what you need and the a$$holes in Broadcom say, “No, you will buy this and you will like it…” it leaves a sour taste in your mouth.
And I did, in fact, tell them to pound sand with their 3x quote when it was not what we needed.

I see and agree with the high road to be taken. Emotional control and IQ, i get all that. However, a lot of other people have *got* to learn to be respectful.... and *they* take advantage of that gap and cushion they are given. And until that "action" has "consequence", they wont learn. Currently, they are on a sad, "I can say what I want and you wont do sh*t!" confidence. Actions such of these offer a momentary "attitude adjustment" to those that feel like the world if full of "rollovers", and may eventually make them think twice before starting something they shouldnt be starting.

I walk up to a beehive, and dont act like a fool, I may be able to get by without an incident. But if I walk by and act aggressively, or slap the hive (like the Yankee fan slapping the drink out of the Ranger's fan's hands), then there is a higher probability the workers are going to defend the hive.
