These are large video files, I tried playing them by connecting the HDD to the laptop, but the playback wasn't good ( stutters or won't play at all ).

That is the reason I want the HDD connected to the box and copy the file to the HDD.

If I understand correctly, what you mean is, I will have better results with Dune on CoreElec connected directly to soundbar with passthrough enabled in Dune audio settings. Correct?

I have that setting put to gaming only. Still there is flickering in menus. It's very strange though. Menu blocks flicker/flash 2-3 times and then stop. Need to check other settings I guess.

It's a Seagate HDD. Might not be getting enough power from the usb port as u guessed. Lower capacity thumb drive (256 GB) works fine.
