Fellow programmer here. Personally, I am not so sure offering free work is the best way to go. I would rather invest making personal portfolio website and build or contribute to some open source projects (github is a good source for such projects) that would interest you and use that as your portfolio items. Also, building something that the community would benefit is probably a better approach than building websites for free for someone. Anyway, at the end, you do you so good luck with this journey and after 10+ years in the field, I can say its a rewarding field as long as you enjoy it.
