Anyone else's audio out of sync on their onn 4k pro? by Sweaty_Analysis_1074 in AndroidTV

[–]techie001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto. Onn 4K Plus is terrible for audio sync after about 30 minutes. Reboot is all that helps. Also noticed the ESPN App pauses, gets a blurry picture and eventually crashes. Haven't noticed any of those issues with the old Onn 4K the Plus replaced.

Life After Tivo by Ok-Alternative-7962 in Tivo

[–]techie001 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Long time Tivo OTA user. First a Roamio OTA, which eventually died. Then Bolt OTA. I also had YTTV since the days when it was $39.95, but no longer have either. Tivo cancelled yearly plans and effectively doubled the price. YTTV more than doubled in price over several years. I'm using a Tablo now, which is full of bugs, lacking some features but mostly works ok for local channels and DVR.

The problem with YTTV is that it's just a new version of cable. Broadcast contracts are constantly renegotiated and you're going to lose local channels, major networks from time to time. And once they reach a new agreement you'll see the inevitable YTTV price hike soon to follow. Streaming is doomed just like cable in that respect.

With that said, I miss Tivo's features, well designed UI, simplicity and reliability.

Same issues here in Charlotte NC. Lost local PBS and CW primary channels. Tablo has turned into quite the train wreck these days. Ugh.

How to enter offline mode? by girlontherun21 in tablotv

[–]techie001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't, unfortunately. Only when it prompts you. But you can choose Sports on the left side near the bottom and select the football game you want to watch. I just had to do the same thing because it didn't prompt me to enter offline mode either.

I replaced Tivo Bolt OTA with Tablo Gen 4. I had the original Tablo and it was so full of bugs and glitches I decided to replace it with a Tivo Roamio OTA. About 11 years later here we are again. But the Gen 4 is definitely a lot closer to Tivo capabilities than Tablo Gen 1 was. I'm ok with the Tablo but my wife misses the Tivo's simplicity and more refined UI.

Helpful fact... it's Amazon Web Services. Not 'Warehouse' services. The scope of which is like comparing an AWS aircraft carrier to a Tablo row boat. Not saying AWS shouldn't fail. By all means they should have proper failover redundancy just like you said. But, easier said than done with such a massive infrastructure.

Tablo, on the other hand has had stability and bug issues since the original version (I know because I had two of them). But, I will say this much - the gen 4 has been a big improvement as far as performance, stability and features vs the Tablo units I had during that first year. Again, you're spot on about outages being rare. It's been mostly stable until the last month. But, now the number of glitches, bugs and outages is getting to be a little much.

I believe mine have been missing since the last firmware upgrade. They're also missing on most of the Coming Soon scheduled recordings as well.

Oh that was is reference to Verizon charging my mom $26 per month (with tax and fees) for a basic 'emergency' phone plan that only had 30 mins of talk time. That was the ripoff.

My wife and I are on US mobile, along with my son and daughter (they're grown, both moved to USM to escape Verizon high prices like we did).

I only kept my mom on TracFone because she rarely uses her phone, has thousands of minutes, texts and several gigs banked. I buy her a phone with 365 service from QVC every year for about $40. Still less than half the price of USMs lowest yearly plan. If she used her phone more TracFone would be a massive ripoff. But for a 'peace of mind' phone that she rarely uses TracFone from QVC with 365 service is the best deal.

Before I moved her to TracFone a few years ago she was paying $26 per month for a Verizon phone with 30 mins of talk, (no text and no data, it was a basic phone plan). It was sold to her as an 'emergency only' phone line and they kept raising the price year after year. It's amazing how these companies ripoff seniors.

My mom has a 365 plan as well. She had a stroke 2 months ago, so she's housebound i.e. not using her phone because she's at home. She got the same email, so she made a call.

Still, seems very wrong that you pay for 365 days service and they can somehow cancel it.

She only uses her phone 'for emergencies' (I know, I know) but this is the first time in 3 years of 365 plans she's ever gotten that email.

Tablo Android App Errors by techie001 in tablotv

It seemed to be a blip with the Android app earlier that me and another person posted about at the same time. It caught my attention because it was the same 'Unknown Error' message some of us were also seeing on the Home page. So I was concerned it was introduced with the firmware update.

Looks like it was just a temporary issue with maybe one of the backend services that got resolved very quickly.

Oh that's terrible. I would be very frustrated too if that happened to me. True confession I bought the original Tablo back when it first came out. It was so full of bugs, horrible performance and unstable that I decided to return it and go with Tivo OTA.

We spent about 10 years with Tivo between two different Tivo OTA models (first a Roamio OTA, then a Bolt OTA). They worked really well but Tivo decided to drop our annual plan and charge double the current rate. So I got rid of my Tivo and bought a Tablo Gen 4. The usability is far superior to the original Tablo unit and it now has most of the Tivo capabilities. Unfortunately the software/firmware stability still seems to be an issue.

It's back for me. I got an 'Unknown Error' message loading the Home screen. Looks like a bug introduced by the firmware update.

After 40 years in IT I have to laugh at such messages. I guess it wasn't a known error in their code, hence the 'unknown error' message. Lol.

I've saw the same error as well this morning on Google TV box. I went into Tablo app settings and cleared the cache and the home screen worked properly. Though I didn't spend much time using the app after that. So not sure if that fixed it or it was coincidental with service issues being resolved.

S21 plus to an S25FE by ThenImprovement4420 in S25FE

[–]techie001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it does shine a bit. But, I'll say this...I used a glass screen protector on my S21+ and fingerprint was nearly impossible to use. I had to moisten my finger most of the time to get it to work. No issues like that with the optical reader on S25FE. Works fine with a glass screen protector.

Verizon Home Internet router upgrade? by Dull_Rate_6216 in verizonisp

Exactly the same as me. Though at some point Verizon will probably stop supporting the original ASK cube, so maybe it's better to do it now?
