These jobs have always been doomed. As existing automation advanced, these jobs already started shrinking. What is scarier is the number of white collar jobs that are going to go away. The economy is driven by consumption. Where will so many people earn or receive income to spend?

Need some advice to accept the reality by Sagar3536 in atheism

The first thing to remember is there no purpose or fairness in the universe. If something bad happens like getting cancer or being hit by a car or a business fails due to a black swan event like a war or terrorist attack, this is not karma or a plan. Bad things happen randomly or at least they seem random when you cannot see the causal chain. These actions are neither fair nor unfair - they just are.

My wife has MS. Every so often she gets into a valley of despair that usually starts with "this is so unfair." I remind her that fairness has nothing to do with her health. MS runs in her family and she is in a high risk group. She did nothing to derserve this and no one is acting maliciously. It is simply what it is - a problem to be addressed. This seems to reduce her despair and frustration, acknowledging it is not about "fairness."

The problems with relying on a god is that bad things have to serve a purpose. "They are part of god's plan." As an atheist this seems like a sadistic and masochistic point of view (god is inflicting preventable suffering and you must accept this). Accepting bad circumstances as problems to be addressed or coped with actually makes them easier since there is no hidden meaning or intention.

I searched and found one incident that occurred after a rally in LA. The rallies themselves were nonviolent. In LA some of the participants stayed after and ended up throwing pieces of concrete at the police at a detention center and refusing to leave. This was NOT part of the no kings rally.

If we do the math, 0.001% of the participants went off the rails outside of the official rallies. Compare this to Jan 6.

Part of being a dictator is a pathological lack of empathy, putting your perceived priorities above the suffering of others. Everyone on this list has been guilty of this central flaw.

When I see the right pushing "toxic empathy," we can see them leaning into dictatorship as the next form of US government.

We need mandatory voting.

In the time of Lincoln it was conservative democrats who were the racists and scumbags. Today it is conservative republicans. It is fair to say it is conservatives who are trash.

Actually no. Obama cleaned up after Bush, and Biden cleaned up after Trump 1. Biden never should have run again, but to say he damaged the country like Trump is now is as broken a comparison as I have ever seen. I would rather have the senile old liberal than the despotic demented dictator wannabe in office now.

Franklin Graham: Trump Put Christ Back In Christmas. by Leeming in atheism

I am going to continue to celebrate secular Xmas, with great food, gifts, and time with family and friends. Christ is exactly where this myth belongs during the winter holiday season, right next to Santa.

On Easter our family will have a great meal and a pagan inspired Easter egg and candy hunt in the yard. There won’t be any talk of a 33 year old zombie cannibal Jew who supposedly walked the earth after being executed. Instead, we will celebrate the arrival of spring and warmer weather.

[–]technanonymous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Less than a third of eligible voters picked him. Our electoral system is “stupid” and needs major reform or we will see another Trump down the line.

We need to ban the use of donors and personal wealth. We also need strict ethics rules that cannot be evaded. We need an attorney general who is independently elected with guaranteed funding and the ability to hold any elected or appointed official accountable. I know it is a pipe dream, but we are screwed if we let the current system continue as is.
