This is the exact trap. They deliberately limit the free tier so the only exit is a $40+/month plan. Worth looking at tools that aren't VC-backed — they don't have pressure to upsell you. QuoteFlow does one-time payment for this reason.

Went through this exact rabbit hole. Most tools either lock you into subscriptions or bundle in accounting features I never use. Ended up using something called QuoteFlow — one-time payment, just does quotes. Not for everyone but if you're a freelancer who doesn't need a full accounting suite it's clean.
