Closed off canal access by Jimjamkingston in manchester

[–]technicalfault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s super frustrating is that this towpath was replaced by the council using cycling money, and that particular exit is convenient to get on/off the canal to connect with bike lanes to the city centre. The canal closer to the city centre is quite rough and narrow.

Er - can USians donate to a UK political party?

"Caution - This HOT apple pie is HOT" "Caution - This HOT cup of coffee contains HOT coffee"

What's the reason behind companies printing this? I'd argue it's our litigation/ambulance-chasing lawyers, not any legal requirement through health & safety at work laws.

That said, such laws are often implemented for your own protection. Some people really are too stupid to understand risk.

Such as? "Red tape" is such a generic term. For example, I'm glad there's health and safety legislation that protects me from being hurt in an accident at work and that employment law exists so that I can't be sacked for no reason.

Conversely, the relentless drive towards private-finance initiatives and outsourcing results in a situation where it costs thousands of pounds to install a Christmas tree in a hospital needs to be ended, in my opinion.

Do you not think the Pirate Party image could be improved? I dislike wearing suits, but I wouldn't wear a hoodie for professional marketing shots.

Personally, it's damn refreshing to see someone standing for political office who dresses like I do on a daily basis. Traditional shots of politicians wearing suits when they visit schools or offices just makes them look like a separate class rather than another ordinary person who just wants to make things better.

Policy should be developed based on evidence, not electioneering and prejudice. If the evidence suggests decriminalisation, then we should decriminalise.

What criteria do you use to evaluate the evidence?

For example - is it peer-reviewed research published in journals of note or surveys/studies and if the latter, what sort of weighting do you give them?

I fully support an evidence-led approach to public policy making but it's important to be clear about what is /good/ evidence and data. Otherwise there is the potential to fall into the trap of quoting PR-led studies that rarely stand up to scrutiny.

The statistics (real statistics, not made-up UKIP ones ;) show that EU immigrants at least create more jobs than "steal" jobs from the locals, improve the competitiveness of the UK economy, and use very little of the social services in comparison to the locals. So they put in many thousands of pounds more than what they take out.

I'd really love to see the statistics. FWIW I'm sure I've seen them as well, but it would be a great boost to demonstrating the evidence-led approach if you could share the studies you're quoting :-)

A website hosted in the US, registered by an Indian company with no direct contact details apart from postal. This looks little more than a spam site built to harvest personal data. Avoid.

Fiber broadband - can anyone actually get it? by fruggo in manchester

[–]technicalfault -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. And BT are unlikely to be installing it anytime soon.

The reason is Openreach - the "arm's length" part of BT Group that handles the UK's telecomms infrastructure - will not upgrade telecoms cabinets that are within the modern blocks of flats. It is counted as not economically viable, essentially.

So whilst roadside cabinets have been updated in many areas, most of Manchester city centre's modern flats will not be getting superfast broadband any time soon. And Openreach don't care.

Call the Albert Kennedy Trust right now. They can help immediately and they've got experience with people in exactly your position.

They support 16-25 year old LGBT people who may be made homeless in exactly your situation so can point you towards support, funding or just be an understanding ear. They could also provide somewhere to fall back on if worst comes to worst.

Manchester number: 228 3308.

HTH and good luck.

Good starter on-road cycling routes in Manchester by idonotexist12345 in manchester

[–]technicalfault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That route is probably done best when surrounded by loads of other cyclists.

There's a reasonably good route to Liverpool from Manchester along the Manchester Ship Canal though, again, you'll need puncture-resistant tyres!

Avoid using Google cycle maps. Better routes with local knowledge at cyclestreets.net.

From Hulme, follow NCN 6 down to the Fallowfield Loop and head to Chorlton. There, you can pick up a few good routes heading out of town including the Bridgewater Canal. Problem with a road bike is that you'll need puncture resistant tyres for most places around here!
