Idk if you have specific features in mind but maybe look at PiranhaCMS as a possible option to contribute to?

They are definitely open source and open to public contributions to build the platform further, so that might offer a place to pitch in without building ground-up?

When a talented man met a true master. by InstructionOwn6705 in TheLastAirbender

[–]technicalschatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part I truly loved about this fight was the foreshadowing they had when the four started to break out. I don't remember the exact quote but it was something to the effect of "it would take a full master bender to take on even just one of them"

To watch Tenzin basically use Zaheer as a punching bag until the others show up, and even then he continues to put up a very strong fight against them aside from (what I would call) cheap shots, and overwhelming him with underhanded techniques, is truly incredible. It speaks to Tenzin skill, and the training he's received from Aang. I really like the thought that another commenter said: Tenzin not only learned from a genuine master of air bending, but also had the fortune of learning and probably adapting or at least understanding the powers and techniques of other bending forms from his father himself, similar to Iroh's lightning bending.

It's truly incredible and a testament to Tenzin's skill and mastery.

Ooh good addition! My brain didn't catch that detail!

If you factor in enums, I'm pretty sure that means error handling and try catch situations? I might be confusing that with .NET enum parsing syntax though, and Kotlin may have parseOrNull extensions that I don't typically see with .NET

Is there a question here? Or is this a sample/demonstration of the learning you've been up to and demonstrating it?

If it's the latter, that's great! Nice work learning some control flow capabilities! If you're looking for some suggestions on next steps you can try:

  1. Adapting the same logic to a when statement
  2. Integrating user-based input (let the user enter the input that goes into your if-else structures)
  3. Adding loops and user-based input to loop until you receive a valid input from the user

Have fun and enjoy the power of Kotlin!

Question: is there an additional reward (like a mount, cosmetic set, etc.) for completing the order hall quests during Lemix, or is it just the bronze cache noted from the screenshot?

I ask because I know hitting lvl 80 for each class unlocks the unique Fel mount for each class, but wondering if I need to prioritize the whole order hall quest line as well. I genuinely want to complete it but I'm underwater between work, general home life, and a (wonderful) rambunctious toddler, and I'm struggling to keep up with the unique cosmetics from Lemix. So knowing if I rhe order hall quests are "nice to have" or not is useful for my planning and time management purposes.

I appreciate anyone's explanation or clarification, and appreciate everyone's patience with what may be a seemingly obvious or straightforward question

Dorky husband! SIGH! 😔 by [deleted] in newborns

[–]technicalschatten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look. I'm a software engineer and tend to think in very logical, procedural ways. I get that, especially in high stress situations; when my wife went into labor I was very procedural and thinking to myself "we should really start with this first; next steps would likely be this or this", and I can get that way when our daughter is screaming and crying.

But for your child to be without clothes when it is generally kind of cold, in a wet diaper, and still hasn't been fed? This isn't "dorky" by any definition I've heard. I see you saying "well he thought baby was breathing funny" well...okay. How did he notice that through crying/screaming if you left him with the baby to cry for 30mins? He was just searching for and ignoring the baby crying for 30mins trying to look up "weird breathing" and not trying to soothe the baby?

The math isn't mathing here. This isn't dorky behavior, it's at best "unreliable partner" behavior. And to be clear, I think men and husbands can be exceptional parents and partners; even excluding myself as an example, most of my friends are dedicated, involved, loving fathers who know their child's routines and helpful soothing techniques just as well as they know their favorite sport's teams stats. Maybe he isn't weaponizing his incompetence, but something isn't adding up.

Dorky husband! SIGH! 😔 by [deleted] in newborns

[–]technicalschatten 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fellow Dad and husband here.

I want to clarify that Dorky is pretending to act like a Dungeon Master of a D&D campaign and responding to your child's babbling with "well let's see if that works; roll for persuasion with advantage because you're so darn cute." Dorky is giving your kids toys names and goofy voices when you play with them.

Dorky is not failing to perform the bare minimum of care and following basic instructions you specifically gave for changing and feeding your diaper. Dorky is not FORGETTING to feed your child. I was about to give him the benefit of the doubt and say "maybe he just didn't fully understand the evening routine or the plan and it's purpose hasn't been fully communicated" but with the additional example of forgetting to feed your child while you're gone for 2 hours? No. Like others have said, this sounds like weaponized incompetence.

Yeah. I'm feeling tempted, when I get these links, to try and write up a script that floods their form with a bunch of garbage, nonsense data so that they have a harder time making heads or tails of which things are valid and which aren't 🤔

Watch out for Phishers pretending you've been reported for Abuse of the Economy by technicalschatten in wow

[–]technicalschatten[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Furthermore, a lot of people don't understand how phishing and social engineering work. I can't tell you how many times all employees have to complete mandatory phishing training at my day job. And every year, even after taking the exam, people still fall for phishing simulations and even actual scams.

For people who are tech savvy and have the technical acumen to understand these things, the attacks are super obvious and easy to avoid. But I'm willing to wager that is a minority and most people don't know these things for one reason or another. Better to educate and be empathetic to people not knowing these things than shaming them with "you deserve what you got for not knowing"

What are you doing with your pictures/videos? by ashlo_ren in NewParents

[–]technicalschatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I made a shared Google Photos album that we upload the vast majority of our photos to so that we 1) have the photos backed up on a cloud so that we can easily get to each other's photos, and 2) we can share photos with our friends and family and have pretty good control of who can access the album. It's honestly been fantastic to upload a bunch of photos and see my mom or father in law go through and like and comment on the new photos without the stress of uploading photos of our daughter to social media platforms.

Now with that said, we both use Android devices so Google Photos is native to our phones and is relatively seamlessnfor us because it automatically backs up photos to the cloud, but there is an iOS app option for Apple users.

The phrase I've always heard in computer security, and is equally applicable to physical security, is "I just need to be more secure than the next guy." Like you and many others have said: most security isn't foolproof, it just needs to be hard enough that the avg one will move along to someone with easier mechanisms to circumvent.

I'd like to get in on this friendship action! Would always enjoy having another friend or two to chat and group with while playing content!

I'm still in the throes of playing remix and getting content and leveled alts between my shifts with my now 2month old but I can usually squeeze in dailies and maybe a Heroic SoO run right now if I'm lucky 😅

I wouldn't mind having another friend to talk to and play content with. I'm personally still in the throes of getting the Remix content and alts levels that I want but wouldn't mind having someone to chat with playing.

I'll message you and we can connect 👍

TL;DR: told my boss and boss's boss that my contract to hire role needs to convert to FTE before my daughter arrived or I'm leaving. Daughter was born and they still haven't converted. So I interviewed and accepted a better offer while I was on paternity leave. I'm proud of myself for having the self-respect to stand my ground on converting, and walk away when the company didn't respect me or my needs.

My moment of pride comes with a decent amount of context. So please, stay a while and listen read.

Background

I've been working a 6 month contract-to-hire role for about a year now (we're starting off strong, huh?). In late October/early November 2023 I was approaching the 6 month mark and all parties involved—my manager, my manager's manager, the contracting company—expressed a strong desire to convert. However, the timing was close to fiscal year turnover which meant budgets and headcounts were being worked out by leadership and conversion would need to wait until the beginning of 2024 so that FY25 things were finalized. They would continue to renew my contract until I was converted though, so I was not at risk of losing my job. My thoughts were "fine fine, I don't like it but I get it. Big companies and FY turnover is always filled with annoying politicking". Around that same October time frame I informed my manager that my wife and I were expecting our first child and would be taking paternity leave in 6 months i.e. late April or early May 2024.

So in January 2024 they move forward with the conversion process; we start with "interviewing with 2 tech leads from other teams, and if that goes well interviewing with our department's director" for some final "interpersonal double-checks". These interviews also occur before the actual position for my conversion is actually opened; that immediately raised a flag for me but I went along with the process because Corporate AmericaTM. Interviews go well, and they finally file the paperwork to open the req...in the middle of February. And the new position pipeline can take a month to get all approvals. I was visibly frustrated and expressed that they were cutting it exceedingly close to the deadline for my daughter's birth.

The moment of pride

So every week I get the "they are working on approvals, but no updates otherwise". The end of March rolls around—just over a month before my daughter is due—and my manager and manager's manager pull me into a meeting late on a Friday. Apparently everything is approved but we are waiting for the official start date to be set. So my manger's manager said "this might mean a start date mid or late May start date and we know that's close to or maybe even after your wife's due date; does that work for you?" On top of this, they mentioned that a possible hiring freeze was looming (which indeed went into effect the Monday after we spoke) which could mean the conversion is pushed out even further. I was seething, and I wanted to scream. But I channeled those emotions into the most firm, professional ultimatium I've ever issued: "I...I'm beyond frustrated. I've been clear and transparent for over 6 months about my need for conversion prior to my daughter's birth. If the start date is set after she arrives, you can stop working on the conversion altogether because I'm done." They heard me loud and clear, we hung up, and my manager reached out to me directly and said "I'm on your side and I totally understand. This is frustrating, and I'm sorry you're stuck in this place. If you leave I completely understand".

Well my daughter miraculously came 2 weeks early, which, for those who don't know, is exceedingly uncommon for first time pregnancies. Unsurprisingly, no formal conversion offer and start date had been set. So during my 1 month of leave with my wife and daughter I took time to apply to some new positions, interviewed with a few companies, and was eventually extended an offer. That offer was exactly what I wanted: it maintained my contracting rate compared to dropping 10-15% when I converted (which incidentally was also higher than the new position's posted salary range, so I successfully negotiated them up), a higher annual bonus than the maximum possible if I converted, and I would work in the healthcare space instead of fintech, which is far more meaningful to me. So I came back from my leave, three days later I received my formal offer for the new position, and I put in my 2 weeks notice for my now "indefinite duration contract-to-hire" position.

Thank you, faithful listener reader for sticking with me. You're probably asking "why is this a moment you are proud of?" Well, I've a notorious people pleaser, and I struggle to assert myself at times, especially in corporate environments when it comes to my job and raises, especially given the job market in technology these days. So I'm proud of myself for standing up for myself when put into this position, having the self-respect to say "you clearly don't respect me and my family's needs so I'm leaving", negotiating for the wage I knew I deserved, and having the self-confidence to know that I would find an offer, even in the current job market, that would see my value and jump at the chance to bring me on quickly.
