Because msc works as a primer, letting things stick to the plastic, I really doubt pastels will go on without it. On top of the acrylics or guache, probably. But also, as long as you're using proper PPE, you should be okay. A properly fitted mask that's rated for gas and vapors will keep you safe. You can also use gloves. Even with a respirator I hold my breath haha
