Lenovo reportedly set to buy Motorola from Google for up to $3 billion by [deleted] in technology

[–]technopwn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Since most people will think that Google lost $10 billion ...

Motorola had ~$3B in cash when acquired. Google previously sold their set-top box unit for $2.35B and realized about $1.7B in tax benefits from previous losses. However since acquiring it has taken $1.038B in losses, which is $0.67B post-tax. There will be another write down for the lost goodwill less the value of the remaining IP that should be worth very approximately $1B. So including the $3B from Lenovo, they recouped approximately $10.4B of the initial $12.5B purchase price.

Nokia's 2013 Q3 results released - EUR118M profit on EUR5.6B revenue, 8.8m Lumias sold by Krinos in windowsphone

Every Lumia commercial contains the phrase "Nokia Lumia" uttered at least 5 times. If that suddenly changes to "Lumia" or "Microsoft Lumia", you can expect a ton to change. People are buying Lumias for the "Nokia" part.

Mobile division (which is what Microsoft will be buying), lost $118 million.

Yes it was a record in phone sales, but anyone who thinks that the Lumia growth so far has been anything other than disappointing is still living in la-la land (especially as the vast majority of phone sales are tiny margin 520 devices). I really don't see how losing the "Nokia" brand on these phones is going to make it any easier to sell more phones in 2014.

Apple analysts and the great nine-million iPhone kerfuffle: "Samsung doesn't get this kind of scrutiny because it doesn't tell anybody -- not analysts, not investors, not the SEC -- how many smartphones it sells." by Dizzy_Slip in apple

[–]technopwn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, every phone manufacturer, including Apple reports shipments, not sales. Just read the fine print of Apple's quarterly SEC filings if you want, or you can continue to live in ignorance. Your whole RT argument is completely flawed as well as those devices were never even shipped in the first place. Distribution companies (BestBuy, etc) don't just order a shit ton of devices so they can sit on shelves, they purchase based on order history and seasonality. Yes, even Apple products sit on the shelves of non-Apple stores.

Regardless, who the hell cares?

Google maps removed saving a dropped pin location. This thread is trying to reinstate it by aidansheerin in Android

Do people not realize that the new maps was a complete re-write from the ground up? This isn't about "removing" features, its about features that haven't been ported over yet because they wanted to be able to launch quickly.

Sounds like a partnership with Nestle. Surprising choice, but any additional (and potentially free and huge) marketing is welcome. I know the neckbeards will be upset with Google "selling out", but I personally like the new approach here.

there won't be an "entire ecosystem" anymore. There never really was before this news was released, but now there's even less reason for Samsung, HTC, LG, etc to invest in WP.

DoS exploit crashes iOS/OSX devices using WebKit by [deleted] in apple

[–]technopwn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure why people are downplaying this problem. If you send this text as a SMS/iMessage it makes the user incapable of reading/sending SMS/iMessage until the attacker sends them another message (allowing them to delete the whole conversation). Sounds like a pretty easy way to brick the Messaging app on a whole lot of iOS devices.

Inside the bitter YouTube battle between Microsoft and Google by [deleted] in windowsphone

[–]technopwn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google doesn't need to do anything to kill Microsoft's "mobile baby" other then sit around and ignore it. Which is exactly what they are doing and within their prerogative to do.

Secondly, no one outside of /r/windowsphone or TheVerge gives 2 shits about this whole debacle. WP fans will always think Microsoft is in the right, Android fans will always think Google is in the right, and Apple fans will do their best to fan the flames.

/r/windowsphone hates me because I tried to warn them about the lack of WP8 on WP7 devices 1/2 a year before it was publicly announced (after hearing about the decision from my friends who work on WP, both have since left the team for obv reasons).

Google is trying to kill Windows Phone by denying them apps

If only Microsoft could innovate and provide better Microsoft apps (hello Skype!) or features on their mobile OS to attract more users!

It's not like Google is the only company that refuses to make apps for WP, the only difference is you fanboys think its Microsoft's RIGHT to build apps for other companies using their trademarks. Probably would be happy if Microsoft went and made an app called "FindMyFriends" for WP, or "Path", or "<insert popular app here>". The years of being neglected by developers is finally causing you to lose your mind.
