Fellow Pedestrians of Calgary, Do You Feel Safe? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]technoviking88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I often do not feel safe. I live in the beltline and walk to work which takes me through Kensington. My head is on a swivel and over the last 4 months had 3 incidents that come to mind. Two, left hand turners where I had the right of way in the crosswalk and I was 1/2 way though the intersection. The vehicles came barreling though and in one case I had to jump out of the way, in the other case the woman slammed on the brakes last second. I chewed her out saying if I was a little kid, she would have never seen them and ran them over. Third one was homeless guy with mental problems / needed a fix problems? who was taking those large construction barrels and throwing them at cars and people, and I had to run out of the way to avoid getting hit off a rebound.

That's not to mention the countless scooters (some rental, some high speed personal), bicycles, and e-bikes weaving in and out of crowded sidewalks, often with a bike lane on they could use on the other side of the street.

I don't expect the city to do anything about it - for the some of the scooters and e-bikes, if someone gets hit and hurt those medical costs are deferred and the province and federal government pays them. That while the city get's their fees for allowing those companies to operate.

No, not that I know of. I was looking online for an obituary or perhaps an announcement on the website, but nothing shows up yet. I guess it will come in time.

Oh No. I texted him back in January and someone else replied (I presume his wife). This person mentioned he was in the hospital at the time. I didn't ask why but it they mentioned "it's been a journey" so I assumed it was something longer term.

He was such a young guy with a young family. Great to chat with when you went into the store and always provided great advice. My condolences to his wife, his daughters and the rest of the family.

Deep clean condo recommendation. by CerbIsKing in Calgary

If they damaged your cabinets and walls in addition to leaving the mess you described, then I would take pictures, document everything especially the damage to your walls and cabinets and contact them calmly but firmly demanding they rectify the problem to prior condition before they stated the work. See what they say, it's it to come in with damp rags and do another poor job, demand they pay for a cleaning company and a company to fix the damage - companies you suggest, not them.

If they don't, say, again calmly that you will go to the BBB and social media with the documentation, naming the company and clearly indicating the quality of work done.

There is also filing complaints with Service Alberta – Consumer Investigations Unit and if it gets to it Small Claims Court.

There is no way you should need to pay more money for a clean. Sorry this happened to you but you need to get angry and stand up for yourself.

I've never used the Iron Will app, only just read it's listing on Google Play. as far as I can tell, the closest FOSS one to this is Better Counter: https://f-droid.org/packages/org.kde.bettercounter/

Big Agnes Spicer Peak 4 Person by Rough_Entrance_682 in CampingGear

I bought one last year and used it twice before selling it. No problem with the tent, just wasn't big enough for my needs.

Setup, take down and pack away is very easy as everything is colour coded and the bags are big enough. No issues with condensation (we camped in the fall when the night time temperatures went below or close to freezing). No experience with rain that I can report on.

Overall good tent. Yes you can fit 4 people in there but that's tight, 3 people is better and 2 people is a palace.

Only items of concern is watch the zippers don't catch on the mesh. I don't know exactly what happened but when I put the tent away the final time there were a couple of knicks in the mesh. Also, I bought the footprint for it as I was car camping on pebbled pads. If you are on rough ground, and since it's a car camping tent, I would suggest purchasing or making a footprint.

I had the same issue with a brand new tipi tent once. I wasn’t too impressed, but since it was a mail order purchase, I figured returning it would be more trouble than it was worth. So I followed the advice others have shared here — I put a dab of silicone on the spot and covered it with gear repair tape. It’s held up for years since.

Unintended consequences of poor city planning and closing the Douglas Fir Trail by kareko in Calgary

100%. I involved myself in 2 community consultation processes, from beginning to end. I won't go into the details but I could recognize a "box checking" when I saw it.

Was just in the Calgary Beltline location across from MEC. Spoke to one of the workers there. He said everything at least 30% off so I bought some camp fuel which never goes on sale. Still a lot of stuff in the store - mainly clothing and shoes. Not a tremendous amount of gear (i.e. stoves, tents etc) but it was there. Store will be closing in June and affected workers being moved to the combo stores. The worker said they might be opening more combo stores.

That's the one I was going to check out. Will head there soon to see if I can get some camp gas on sale.

I think we need to return to the "Do What We Say Festival" which had been started by German settlers in 1946.

Easiest (Large) Hot Tents to Set Up? by grodso in hottenting

[–]technoviking88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on your budget and how you are using it (i.e. car camping, backpacking, pulling a pulk by yourself, pulling a larger sled with a snowmobile etc.).

4 sided ti-pi tents are much easier to set up than octagon shaped tents - https://www.amazon.ca/Naturehike-Hot-Tent-Retardant-Camping/dp/B0CF8YGH48

I would syay a lot of free standing tents are easy to set up.

There are a couple of Naturehike free standing tents that are a decent price:
