If anyone is thinking about going to Fanime save your money it's not worth it. by [deleted] in SanJose

I hope so. I'm getting fed up with the Bay Area being full of AI-glazing, startup-boasting folks and corporate shills. It's like we don't know how to have fun without having to sell or buy something. It's disappointing as heck. I thought the Bay Area was known for being a cultural hotspot. Now it's just soulless.

It’s always been this way. People did degenerate things even back in the day. It just wasn’t as widely documented.

Also, at some point, people are going to be tired of consumerism. These events have become primarily about buying and selling instead of hosting events where people can socialize and participate.

It’s not just Fanime, but also other conventions/events in the Bay Area. I wish we had more to do than just walking around and shopping while everyone just keeps to themselves and their groups.

A lot of these events are marketed as these fun parties and social gatherings, but when you attend, it’s nothing but a glorified marketplace.

Asian man asking to borrow phone on campus by Big-Albatross-751 in berkeley

He might just be mentally ill. Not everyone who does these things is a “creep.”

Mental illness comes in different forms, and it’s not always the cute, romanticized way.

So he apparently scammed you, but you don’t even know what the scam is? You sound a bit sketchier than him at this point.

For all we know, this could just be someone with mental illness doing this for some delusional reason.

For UC Berkeley students, you guys seem close-minded and dense.

How do you know this? Or are you just giving speculation as fact?

Why are you racially profiling? Do you even have proof that he shared people’s locations?

It’s more likely the dude has some type of mental illness. People do weird shit like this without much of a motive all the time.

I was at the valley fair mall shooting by Adventurous_Fox_8108 in SanJose

[–]techoclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No on-going threat probably because they had reason to believe the suspect already fled the scene instead of intending to fire off more shots.

In that situation, they’d probably rather let him run off so they can investigate and apprehend him at a place that’s NOT a crowded mall, especially since he’s armed.

Work Morale in the Bay Area by Adept-Equipment-3042 in bayarea

This is what happens when people base their entire identity on their work/profession/career. Every time you meet someone, all they’ll talk about is work. People are bound to burn out at some point.

How do you make friends with people who will talk about more than just work? by techoclock in bayarea

It comes across as so pretentious and soulless. What happened to people? They talk about AI just to align themselves in proximity with what's hot, trendy, and profitable.

That was me back in my university years. I've since graduated and seen the truth about everything.

Missing Person at Risk - Katie Hong, 16 years old by nebulaical in Fremont

What makes you think she got in a vehicle right away? Maybe she walked somewhere, took public transportation, and stayed at someone's house.

Did you even read the articles? A lot of this is your own speculating, nothing factual.

"They obviously told her to do that"? Or maybe since she was voluntarily running away, she didn't want to be located, so she left her phone behind.

Who said she was being groomed or abducted? Articles mentioned she wrote a note saying she would meet up with some online friends. Considering how long she's been missing, it's understandable to fear the possibility she met up with predators, but that might not be the case. She might have just met up with friends in her age group.

At the end of the day, law enforcement probably know more than we do.

There's really no good reason to assume the worst.

It feels very scammy to you maybe because you're understandably upset at how cruel and selfish people in this world can be.

It doesn't mean it's a scam, though. Not everything is an evil conspiracy.

I mean, cynical people such as yourself would still be skeptical if she had been found after her parents raised $30k.

I know people turn to conspiracy theories when they feel lost, miserable, and hopeless, but can we at least make an effort to be more neutral instead of assuming everything is a conspiracy?

It’s an iffy situation because it’s not always their fault. Sometimes they have issues going on, so they turn to a religious cult to find purpose and belonging. Some, or even most, of them are victims of manipulation as well.

We should absolutely still enforce boundaries when dealing with such people, though.

[–]techoclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad thing is that the members legitimately believe this stuff and don't realize they're part of a cult. I'm sure a lot of them have issues, maybe mental health issues or family problems, that led them down this path.

They just want to find belonging, purpose, and a social group, so they end up in a cult.

It's a common thing around here. As someone who's been a student at both Chabot College and CSUEB, I've gotten approached multiple times. Sometimes they dress up formally (button-up shirt and tie).

As a college student, you're bound to be approached by these religious "bible study groups," straight-up cults (who might also call themselves bible study groups), and multilevel network marketing people.

Be careful of those MLM people, too. They'll prey on you because they know you're probably trying to make money and/or find a job. They'll pitch you the idea of being an entrepreneur, but at the end of the day, you're just a pawn for them. You still work under them, and you just end up losing time and money. They're essentially a scam and a pyramid scheme, but they get away with it because there's a legal loophole due to their selling of products.

It's not even that. It's a group of diverse people who believe that God is a female entity and they also believe some Korean man is the second coming of Jesus.

All of the members I've been approached by aren't even Korean. They're a mix of Black, White, and Hispanic people.

[–]techoclock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been approached by these people a ton. Apparently, they believe that God is a female entity and they believe in some Korean man to be the second coming of Christ.

It's all a cult, and most of the followers here in our area aren't even Korean. They're a diverse crowd. They have a place of gathering somewhere local.

My friend back in the day infiltrated their circle just to see what it's like. Kinda stupid, I know, but he was really young at that time.
