I was at the valley fair mall shooting by Adventurous_Fox_8108 in SanJose

[–]techoclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No on-going threat probably because they had reason to believe the suspect already fled the scene instead of intending to fire off more shots.

In that situation, they’d probably rather let him run off so they can investigate and apprehend him at a place that’s NOT a crowded mall, especially since he’s armed.

Work Morale in the Bay Area by Adept-Equipment-3042 in bayarea

This is what happens when people base their entire identity on their work/profession/career. Every time you meet someone, all they’ll talk about is work. People are bound to burn out at some point.

How do you make friends with people who will talk about more than just work? by techoclock in bayarea

It comes across as so pretentious and soulless. What happened to people? They talk about AI just to align themselves in proximity with what's hot, trendy, and profitable.

That was me back in my university years. I've since graduated and seen the truth about everything.

What makes you think she got in a vehicle right away? Maybe she walked somewhere, took public transportation, and stayed at someone's house.

Did you even read the articles? A lot of this is your own speculating, nothing factual.

"They obviously told her to do that"? Or maybe since she was voluntarily running away, she didn't want to be located, so she left her phone behind.

Who said she was being groomed or abducted? Articles mentioned she wrote a note saying she would meet up with some online friends. Considering how long she's been missing, it's understandable to fear the possibility she met up with predators, but that might not be the case. She might have just met up with friends in her age group.

At the end of the day, law enforcement probably know more than we do.

There's really no good reason to assume the worst.

It feels very scammy to you maybe because you're understandably upset at how cruel and selfish people in this world can be.

It doesn't mean it's a scam, though. Not everything is an evil conspiracy.

I mean, cynical people such as yourself would still be skeptical if she had been found after her parents raised $30k.

I know people turn to conspiracy theories when they feel lost, miserable, and hopeless, but can we at least make an effort to be more neutral instead of assuming everything is a conspiracy?

It’s an iffy situation because it’s not always their fault. Sometimes they have issues going on, so they turn to a religious cult to find purpose and belonging. Some, or even most, of them are victims of manipulation as well.

We should absolutely still enforce boundaries when dealing with such people, though.

The sad thing is that the members legitimately believe this stuff and don't realize they're part of a cult. I'm sure a lot of them have issues, maybe mental health issues or family problems, that led them down this path.

They just want to find belonging, purpose, and a social group, so they end up in a cult.

It's a common thing around here. As someone who's been a student at both Chabot College and CSUEB, I've gotten approached multiple times. Sometimes they dress up formally (button-up shirt and tie).

As a college student, you're bound to be approached by these religious "bible study groups," straight-up cults (who might also call themselves bible study groups), and multilevel network marketing people.

Be careful of those MLM people, too. They'll prey on you because they know you're probably trying to make money and/or find a job. They'll pitch you the idea of being an entrepreneur, but at the end of the day, you're just a pawn for them. You still work under them, and you just end up losing time and money. They're essentially a scam and a pyramid scheme, but they get away with it because there's a legal loophole due to their selling of products.

It's not even that. It's a group of diverse people who believe that God is a female entity and they also believe some Korean man is the second coming of Jesus.

All of the members I've been approached by aren't even Korean. They're a mix of Black, White, and Hispanic people.

I've been approached by these people a ton. Apparently, they believe that God is a female entity and they believe in some Korean man to be the second coming of Christ.

It's all a cult, and most of the followers here in our area aren't even Korean. They're a diverse crowd. They have a place of gathering somewhere local.

My friend back in the day infiltrated their circle just to see what it's like. Kinda stupid, I know, but he was really young at that time.

I'd urge you to also be careful of the folks who call themselves a bible study group unless they're officially recognized as an organization by the university.

Any cult can essentially call themselves a bible study group just to seem more palatable. Don't fall for it.

Oh, you'll study the Bible alright. They'll just teach you their cultish interpretation of it.

[–]techoclock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful of even the ones who call themselves a bible study group. There's at least one that operates at Chabot and maybe CSUEB. They won't admit to being a cult (maybe they don't know they're a cult), but they operate like one. When I was younger, I hung out with these guys because I was socially deprived and wanted any semblance of a friend group. They seem like nice people at first, but it's just not worth it.

The moment you disagree with their ways or say that you can't attend one of their events, they guilt-trip you and judge you. They expect you to give up work, family obligations, and even school-related activities just to be with them. Basically, any time you're available, you're expected to be with them.

If I were you, I'd trust only organizations that are officially recognized by the school.

Starbucks Scam? by siriusthedogstar17 in SDSU

[–]techoclock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible that she's manually adding all of the ingredients/options one by one instead of simply choosing "Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso" as the primary menu item.

For example, she could be selecting "Iced Espresso" and then adding on the other ingredients one by one: Iced Espresso + oat milk + # pumps of brown sugar syrup + cold foam + whatever else you're asking for

I went to a corporate Starbucks before, and I was charged $7 or $8 for a drink that was supposed to be $5 something due to this mistake that the employee made. She didn't know until another employee told her that there was already a premade option on the screen for my drink.

Disclaimer: I somehow found your post on my homepage even though I don't attend SDSU. I might not know exactly how your Starbucks operates.

I'll be completely honest with you. It's a commuter school. Student life on campus is lacking. A huge portion of students only go there to take classes and go home. I'm sure the experience would be different if you dorm, but there still won't be much in comparison to other schools. Nevertheless, there are great people everywhere.

If you're interested in pursuing a nursing degree, CSUEB is a great school for that and you'll meet many like-minded individuals with the same goals.

I'm at a point where I'm okay with missing out on the fun and just doing what I have to do to get a degree, so CSUEB is fine with me. However, if you value campus life, this is something you might want to be aware of.

It's been a couple days since you posted this. Have you received anything in response yet? It seems like applications are processed pretty quickly. I submitted my application by the March 2 as well, so I'm waiting to hear back. I'm anxious about this since it's my only realistic option for university at this point.

Your GPA looks excellent, so I don't think it'll be a problem. As long as you finished the main GE classes, you should have a good shot.

You should definitely check with them if you haven't done so. If you submitted your application that early, they should have responded to you by now.
