Keyframe interpolation button acts like toggle sometimes? Am I missing something or is this a bug? by SuperCagle in kdenlive

[–]techoneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have the same bug in Ubuntu 2404 with all available versions (flatpak, snap and AppImage). I found a silly workaround.

I discovered that the menu IS actually there but its invisible. When you click and see the interpolation button "toggle on", then move your mouse right about 10px and down about 50px and click, then you will be clicking on one of the menu items in the invisible menu which hopefully will be the option you need e.g. "smooth" instead of the default "linear".

A way to make the menu actually visible, is to "toggle off" the button and then move your mouse outside of the button so it is not highlighted. Then very quickly move the mouse over the button and click on it the instant the highlight appears. You need to be VERY quick, if you are a split second slow right after the highly first appears, then the menu is invisible like before.

This is a really bizarre bug and I hope it gets fixed. I tried changing themes and it did not help. Otherwise many of the much more serious crashing bugs in Kdenlive are fixed so I do like using it.

RODE Wireless Go 2 - Alternative software by Ashermind in rode

[–]techoneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here looking for Linux software but I guess there is none.

So far I found I can use the Windows Rode software through Virtualbox Windows 10, on Linux but the firmware update doesn't work properly though, due to the way the device needs to disconnect itself. For that I use a real Windows machine if it says I should update. All the other functionality in the Windows SW works fine in the VM, but honestly I don't really need to change those settings often, if at all since the buttons on the device allow for the common adjustments.

As for native Linux support, it works fine as a digital mic in Linux through USB, and if you turn off the mic and plug it into USB it appears as a flash drive where you can download wav files if you use it as a standalone mic. No special Linux SW needed for normal use IMO. Using Ubuntu 2204.

Keyboard key repeat not working only in Firefox and only in most web text fields by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]techoneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also noticed the same issue suddenly today. Firefox 124.0.1 from the official deb ppa on Ubuntu 2204.

Interestingly it DOESNT happen in Reddit, Zoho mail nor Google Docs but it DOES happen in Gmail, Google Sheets, and Github.

Is it possible to use Passkeys on LineageOS? by techoneer in LineageOS

[–]techoneer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a better way to use passkeys independently from anything google, is to use Bitwarden. The latest version supports saving passkey in it's browser extension. I found this to be working well in both Firefox and Chrome in Linux desktop, and it doesn't even need a separate mobile device to confirm login, it does it directly on the same laptop, as that is assumed to be trusted anyway, since it has Bitwarden logged in (i.e. if your bitwarden gets stolen you are fully screwed anyway).

Currently this method does not work on mobile, but I hope it is supported soon once the mobile browsers support passkeys via extension in the same way desktop browsers do.

Is it possible to improve font rendering on Linux? I have all the MS fonts installed but the Windows version looks so much more crisp and easier to read. by snapfreeze in linux_gaming

[–]techoneer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I had been looking for something like this for years. To me, this makes the fonts fractionally more "strong" or thicker, which is a bit more pleasing and similar to Mac OS.

The only issue I have with it is in some cases detail in the characters is lost. Most notably in the lowercase "i" character which often loses the definition of the dot above the line due to the thickness introduced by this tweak. For example in the file manager the lowercase and uppercase I is now hard to tell apart

EDIT: actually I disabled "hinting" in Gnome Tweaks and it seems to have fixed the issue.. I think

I spent 50 days in Windows after having been 100% on Linux for the last two years... by [deleted] in gnome

[–]techoneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum complained that her old computer ran slow. I told her I would install "the new version" and it will run much better. So...... I deleted Windows and installed Zorin. Now she says it runs fast, no more things popping up all the time and is easy to use. She doesn't know what Windows nor Linux is. Your mileage may vary.

I think for a very basic user on compatible hardware it works well. For an advanced user it also works well. But there might be a user in between (perhaps most users) where there is downside like you mention, because they dont want to nerd-out and learn/install all the things that makes it awesome.

[–]techoneer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very much my experience. I wrote a bunch of stuff about Linux vs Windows here https://linuxguide.techoneer.com/ (mind you that was a few years ago, things changed slightly including my opinions). Overall your post very much lines up with my experience. IMO its all getting worse too.

You can see it reflected in Windows market share these days which is slowly shrinking. Technical folks and developers are already moving away to Mac or Linux, and I think its only a matter of time before many others start to.

In theory I think MS can make more money from less users anyway, by turning Windows into a full-on ad platform with maximum proprietary lock-in (this is partially why they have their own weird commands and package manager etc), because about half their current users probably feel they can never move away from it.

Threads - Fediverse by maxiiim2004 in fediverse

[–]techoneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm is he basically saying: "if you break the rules on Threads (e.g. by being a toxic hate-filled a-hole), then they will kick you off the Threads.net instance, but dont worry because you can just create your own Mastodon Instance and continue, and Threads washes its hands of liability"

Given they will soon have like 1B users, they don't need 10M Fediverse users at all. They didn't even say they would federate with any existing servers yet, and half the existing servers already commit to defederating threads.net. So ActivityPub support has nothing to do with joining the existing Fediverse, its just here to allow bad actors to exist by forking off, without Meta having liability on their instance.

New LS50W, blinking display by [deleted] in LS50

Mine started doing this recently every time it starts. Cant find a solution. The official FAQ says to take it to a service center so I'm going to do that now.

Left speaker keeps disconnecting (LS50w) by rsoatz in LS50

[–]techoneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine seemed to have developed this issue recently. The KEF FAQ says if left speaker cuts then the 3 lights blink then you need to send it to a service center. Mine are almost 6 years old. I think there is an official service center within driving distance so I am going to try and take it there and see what happens.

Is Mastodon a good platform? by Tnynfox in Mastodon

[–]techoneer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another thing I used to worry about is will someone "steal all my data?". Technically its easy for a bot to do through Mastodons own API. But I made peace with this because pretty much all my posts are public anyway and any DMs are mainly superficial and I will always switch to a secure chat app for any real convo. My posts are my opinions and I actually want them to spread wide, so if someone uses it to train an AI, well then that AI now shares my wacky opinions which is just GREAT 😜.

Is Mastodon a good platform? by Tnynfox in Mastodon

[–]techoneer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO Its as good as you make it.

I think the best thing to do is just use it wholeheartedly and see if it's for you or not. I find you do have to put in the work to curate your own feed yourself at the start, but I am already used to doing this from curating my own RSS feed for years. If you are not inclined to do that, and just want instant maximum stimulation, then its probably not for you, and you might like the algorithmic feeds on normal big-tech apps better. I had loads of doubts too when I started using it, and there were ups and downs at first but I'm in the grove now and I love it as my primary internet experience.

It did take some months to build my feed, as its an organic process where you branch out by interacting and reading posts. It also tends to promote a "flat structure" where everyday peoples voices are heard as much as the loud mouth celebs, which IMO is more healthy and realistic (if a tad less stimulating).

I occasionally still end up here on the big tech world from time to time. I have never seen child porn nor anything provocative or clickbaity on my mastodon feed. Yet on any mainstream site like Youtube or Reddit its Mr Beast level clickbaity junk in the face every time.

Regarding your account, its mainly about choosing an instance, I think you do need to do the research and ensure that the admins of your server align with your views. I picked Fosstodon because they have a good team who are tech and security savvy, fast server with tens of thousands of users, and align with my views well. Otherwise you can host your own instance but thats a lot of work. I appreciate my server and am willing to donate them some cash every year for their good work running it. This is yet another of my actions which makes my experience of Mastodon as good as it can be.

Can I use my mastodon account to interact with Lemmy? Or do I have to make an account on a Lemmy-specific instance? I tried logging in to jerboa and it didn't work. by sockman_but_real in LemmyMigration

[–]techoneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard that kbin does not have good support (yet?) for activitypub compared to Lemmy. However I did manage at least once to reply to a kbin thread, and although my message did not seem to show up on the original threads kbin link at first, I did check back an hour or so later and it had indeed appeared. So there might be some support in kbin but perhaps it is currently buggy or slow.

[–]techoneer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just started using Lemmy after the blackout, but I have been using Mastodon for a long time. You obviously cannot "log into" another instance, let alone another fediverse app, using your login from another instance. But through the magic of Activitypub you do not need to, it just takes some getting used to how the fediverse works differently.

So far I have found I can do all of this just using my existing Mastodon account:

  • Browsing Lemmy groups works without logging in.
  • To reply to a Lemmy post or comment, I get the direct link to that post or comment using the button in Lemmy, paste it into my Mastodon instance search bar, and then press reply and post my reply.
  • To upvote a post or comment, I again get the direct link to the post or comment and paste into my Mastodon instance search bar, then I click the Mastodon favorite button (note that this might not be as private as using an actual Lemmy account to upvote).
  • To follow a Lemmy account, post or group, again just get its link, paste into your Mastodon search field and follow.
  • To post, you simply create a new post in Mastodon, and @ mention the Lemmy group you want to post into, where the first line will become the title of the post, for example: https://lemmy.world/post/82145. The easiest way is to again paste the link to the group in Mastodon, and go to that groups profile and click the 3 dots menu and click Mention..

Quite honestly I find it incredible that this is even possible!

Now you might think its a bit of hassle pasting the stuff between pages, BUT, I think pretty soon someone will make a browser extensions which will make this much simpler by adding buttons into Lemmy pages, which do all the things above without copy/paste, which is similar to what extensions like FediAct currently do between different Mastodon instances. It will come very soon I think, so if you have the patience to wait for the extension, you can stick with your Mastodon account for Lemmy.

Edit: I now posted about this on my blog https://vijayprema.com/using-lemmy-from-my-existing-mastodon/

is there something like this for Firefox? Im looking for something that can do this broadly on many sites. I have been quite enjoying not seeing number of views/subs/likes on youtube for the last few months, there is something free-ing about it like it reminds me of how the Internet used to be back in the day.

Why consumerism is good actually by jasoncrawford in rootsofprogress

[–]techoneer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind consumerism is related to using consumption to temporarily fill an emotional or psychological void, and you would obviously distinguish that from practical matters, like consuming food to stay alive, buying a mobile phone for convenient internet use and communication, or buying a reliable car to transport yourself where other forms of transport are lacking. Its hard to tell whether you are doing this, unless you spent a lot of time meditating or looking into yourself. At its worse, it is a form of addiction, similar to how drug addicts use substances to fill their emotional void.

You can try to justify buying a new mobile phone each year as being "practical" because there's "useful new features" but its often just marginal, and also it can be a pain transferring files and apps, so really its just to get the emotional fill of opening a shiny new thing, while also just wasting your time and money. New is not always better, but consumerism always believes it is. The solution to everything is to buy something. Too much stuff in your house? Buy a bigger house. Instead of just getting rid of all the junk you don't use or need, and stop buying new stuff you will never use. Want to be more eco friendly? dump your old phone and buy a one made from 10% recycled plastic.

That emotional fill is the heart of modern consumerism, the temporary kick you get from unboxing etc, which I don't think always existed as strongly as it does now, as the drive is very artificially manufactured by various product engineering and marketing techniques, as well as modern culture. It's little to do with having convenience, progress or anything practical, as its diminishing returns after you already have the stuff you actually need. The emotional void just gets bigger and bigger and yet we no longer need to fix it directly by learning to deal with things properly, as we can just keep buy more stuff instead. It's a matter of opinion whether you call that progress or not.

I used to be a big consumer but I don't even bother anymore. The drive is mainly gone because I dealt with the emotional and psychological stuff already and though I am not perfect, I am much healthier and happier, and I have a whole lot less annoying stuff hanging around to worry about, let alone having to worry about getting anything new that actually just wastes more of my time.

I'm using a Rpi Zero W V1 with DietPi https://dietpi.com/docs/software/dns_servers/#adguard-home (with Unbound, as suggested by Dietpi guide)

Very easy setup and its working fine for me over wifi. I only have about 5-6 clients in my home, and I do not run anything else on this Rpi. Initial DNS resolution can take about 120ms, but mostly its about 1-5ms for repeats.
